My Six Month Old Has White Goo in His Eyes

Today I picked up my son from daycare and his provider told me that my son's eyes looked red (on the lids and under his eye) and now, when I got home, he seems to have goo in his eyes (like when you fall asleep), but it goes along the crease of both eyes when he has both of his eyes closed (he was asleep in the car). He doesn't appear cranky or anything. Has anyone else had this experience? This is not the typcial "sleep" in your eyes. This is much gooeyer.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone. We went to the Dr. today and he definitely has pink eye as well as an ear infection. So it's a good thing that we went! He's on antibiotics and the Dr. told us that he should be significantly better in about 24 hours. Thanks to everyone who wrote in as I'm glad I called my Dr.

Sounds like he has the makings of Pink Eye. It is contagious and sometimes there's a fever and aches with it. But, usually, you need antibiotics and drops. I'd get him to a dr. as soon as possible!

Best to you!

If the white of his eye is also red, it may be pink eye. I would have your MD take a look. He may need drops. Be careful to keep your hands away from your eyes becasue pink eye is very contagious. It could also be a clogged tear duct. Either way, I think a visit to the docotr is warrented.

Take your son to the doctor it sounds like pink eye or conjunctivitis. Very contagious. Hope he feels better.

It seems to me that your son might have pink eye. Take him to the drs. as soon as you can. They will give you eye drops or gel that you will have to put in his eyes. It'll help clear it up, but you won't be able to drop him off at daycare because it's contagious.

Defenitely pink eyes. If you call your ped you can ask for a rx for pink eye. The dr office usually doesn't want a child with pink eye to come into the office since it is so contagious. A warm cloth in the morning on the eyes might offer some relief for the discomfort of the dried goo.
Hope by now you have found some relief for your son

It's probably pink eye and if so, it's VEEEEEEEERY contagious... But like a previous poster said, will most likely resolve itself (and I don't agree about antibiotics -- only would use as a last resort). Just use a warm wash cloth with water to clean off the goo.

My daughter had this the other day, it turned out to be pink eye, I took my daughter to the doctor and they gave me some drops for her to use for four days. It cleared it up fast.

My guess is also pink eye. One of my kids had it without much pinkness, but lots of gooeyness. It will probably get pinker if you don't get any drops for it. Just as a point of reference, my pediatrician says that 90% of pink eye will resolve on its own, but daycares and schools pretty much force them to give antibiotic drops (because they won't let kids back into school until they've been using drops for 24 hours.) Having said that - the drops do work wonders.

Not to scare you, but this sounds an awful lot like pink eye. I would call your pediatrician right away, since this is very contagious. Or, it could just be a clogged tear duct, which is what happened with my daughter when she was younger. I hope everything turns out okay, but I would call as soon as possible just to make sure.

sounds like pinkeye. My 17 mo old had it last week. The dr will give you a rx for drops. Clears up quick and will be "not" contagious in a day or so. Be sure to wash your hands alot!

I have to agree that it is the first stages fir pink eye. It is contageous and day care will not let them back with out drops. If you get the antibiotic drops from your ped it should be gone in a couple of days.

He may have conjunctivitis (pink eye) or at the very least an minor eye infection or clogged tear ducts. For now, you can clean them with a warm washcloth. That will also make the irritation, if any, feel better for him. I would call the pediatrician if the actual eyeballs have redness. I know many pediatricians just phone in prescriptions for eye infections instead of having to see them. They will just ask specific questions over the phone...

Hope that helps!

Sounds like a bacterial infection if the child does not have alergies. Since daycares are full of germs I would guess it is either pink eye or someone is not washing their hands between changing diapers of different kids. Request how the daycare used universal precautions with the children. This will not only let them know your doubting their methods of care but put them in check with following the rules. If this gets worse or continues get him to your doctor for some antibactirial salve. It could be something as simple of another child holding your sons hand without washing their hand after toilet use. It could be many things really maybe other persons in your home setting. A few bottles of hand sanitizer and soap and water should keep from passing it on to anyone else. If the goo turns to a ithcy crusty glue for his eyes more than likely it is pink eye. Good luck.
