Hi everyone. I posted a question a few weeks ago about how my period was 5 days late, but I kept getting negative results on my pregnancy tests. Well, on the 6th day, my period began with a vengeance! I bled heavily for about 4 days and then began to spot. Well, instead of my period stopping, I spotted for a day or two, and then my period started all over again! Today is is the 16th day this has been going on! I Have NEVER in my life experienced a 16 day menstrual cycle! My OBGYN called me in some progesterone yesterday, and after taking it, I felt sick as a dog. I researched the synthetic progesterone (Provera) and it scared me, ie: blood clots, etc, etc. I decided to quit the progesterone and make an appointment to go in and see my doctor and ask for some natural progesterone and get my hormones checked out, check for polysistic ovaries, etc. My question is, has anyone ever experienced blood flow lasting for 2 or more weeks, and if so, what was the cause? Ive researched it and learned that stress can alter your progesterone levels, and I have definitely been stressing lately about trying to get pregnant. I just need some peace of mind, advice, anything until i can get in to see my doctor. Thanks, mamas, for any input!

So What Happened?

I went to see my dr today and he said the other dr at the clinic shoudl not have prescribed me Provera without checking me out first. They drew blood and did a pap culture on me. I wont find out until next Monday what the tests show, but he said it could be thyroid or it could be messed up due to stress. Either way, I feel much better after seeing him today. Thanks for all of the input, ladies! I will post what happens in the future!

Several years ago, I got a steroid shot for a bad case of poison ivy. The steroid played havoc with my cycle. I had frequent and unusually long periods for almost 9 months before it regulated again. The doctor was about to put me on birth control pills to regulate, but I waited it out. Get a second opinion from another GYN (get a referral from a friend) if you're still not getting anywhere.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

I'm sorry to say but it sounds like a very early miscarriage to me. Your doctor should be able to do blood tests to check your HCG levels and confirm. They probably will give you a prescription for progesterone to stop the bleeding. Ask for Prometrium, it is kinder and gentler to your body because it is more like your natural progesterone. Provera will give you extreme PMS. Since you are trying to get pregnant you can ask your doctor to do a progesterone blood test about a week after your ovulate to make sure your levels are high enough to support a pregnancy. If they aren't you can use Prometrium supplements for the first 14 weeks to prevent miscarriage. I went thru this myself. I lost the first pregnancy due to low progesterone. With the second one I used Prometrium as a vaginal suppository twice a day until 14 weeks. My little girl is 4 years old and very healthy.

I'd also recommend the book "Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. It's the best book I have found to explain the female reproductive cycle, how it works, what can go wrong and how to track yours. I used the charting in her book and knew I was pregnant before I missed my period and before it would show up on a test.

The provera was the only was to stop my blood flow I bled for almost a month. I know the side effects can seem scary but they are no different from regular birth control pills. If you smoke then the chances are higher of blood clots and the other side effects. Remember the internet can be a bad place to look for info on drugs sometimes. You dr often knows whats best for you. I've had to take provera aobut 10 times to stop blood flow your only on it like 10 days it usually works in aobut 7 but if you dont tkae it hte full 10 you might start again. The reasons for excessive bleeding is endometriosis but polycistic ovarian syndrom is possible too (was tested for that first cause its an easier test) also stress can cause it and even doing unusual hard work like outside yard work and heavy lifting and fibriods. Good luck and I hope its nothing serious.

Stress can definitely throw out your entire system. I had black blood in unusual periods for 2 cycles.. just knew I had cancer or worse... checked out fine, just stress! The doctor said that is the worse thing on your entire system. BUT.. you should get it checked. Perhaps you were pregnant, and you have miscarried. Perhaps you need a DNC to get clean and ready again. Perhaps.... you should get to a doctor and get ovaries and uterus checked out!!!! Best to you and God bless!

S., I had the same thing happened to me this past October .MY period was 8 days late(and I was ALWAYS ON TIME prior to that), then I stared spotting, it stopped and came back for 7 days very heavy flow. I went to the ER because I never had that happen before. Everyone kept saying that it was early miscariage, but they did bloodwork and ultrasound and said there was no sing of pregnancy. YOur doctor can do tests to show if it was pregnancy or not.Mine stopped on it's own after a while, but my pediod has been messed up ever since.

Stress can definitely mess your body up!!! Did you consider miscarriage as a possibility? Many people have miscarriages and didn't even know they were pregnant. If your period was late & had a miscarriage, it's very likely that your test would have been negative because the hormones (HcG) that help implant the egg aren't high enough - which would result in a negative test & miscarriage.
Find the best way to relax - stress will do aweful things to your body! After you're relaxed, then start trying to have a baby. It happens when it happens - and stressing will only make it harder and make way for an unhealthy pregnancy.

Good Luck!

Hi S.,

I agree with the other ladies about you could have possibly had a miscarriage. Also, have you had any sharp pain on one side. Ovarian cysts can burst and create heavy bleeding that last for a while. But, generally there is a good amount of pain with those.

I know that you have said that you have been stressed, but honestly you have to be under an enormous amount of stress for it to really change your periods like you are describing. I was talking with my OB one time about this, and she said that stressing over life changes (buying a new house, changing jobs, financial issues, etc.) isn't typically enough to change your periods.

I agree that the right thing to do is make an appointment. Honestly, I really surprised that your doctor didn't want to examine you before they prescribed the meds. It seems stange to me that he/she just assumed that it was a horomonal issue affecting your period, especially when that has never happened to you before.

The best of luck to you. I hope you get feeling better very soon!

Well actually I had the same thing about two years ago. I was a couple weeks late for my period and then when it came I bled for 26 days and only stopped after I went to the doctor and got birth control pills. The doctor never did find a cause. I took the pills for three months and then stopped and have not had any problems with my period yet. I hope all is well and will be praying for your health.

Don't freak out, but you certainly need to see your doctor. I had this happen and it turned out to be a miscarriage in the 1st 2 weeks of the pregnancy. I wasn't expecting it and was kinda shocked. You need to be examined. I'm shocked now that your doc just prescribed something rather than having you come in and be examined. If this is a miscarriage you may need tests to make sure everything will "fix" iteself or you may need a DNC. Good luck.

How old are you & how long ago did you have your baby? Have you had a weight change recently?

I know several women who went through a similar thing, they are in their late 30's - early/mid 40's. I know after having your babies it can happen or after a weight change.

Sounds like a hormonal shift possibly due to one of those things. Stress could play a factor as well. Examine your life & jot down your observations. This can be helpful to your Dr. when you go in to discuss your issue.

Good luck!

Sounds like early pregnancy loss. It happened to me a couple of times. The bleeding is really aweful but it does eventually end on it's own. Adding hormones to the mix will just delay things returning to normal.

Dear S.,
EDIT: I WAS THINKING THE DOCTOR HAD PUT YOU ON AN ESTROGEN, NOT PROGESTERONE SUPPLEMENT ... BUT, I'M VERY GLAD YOU GOT TO YOUR DOCTOR. GOOD LUCK.
I'm sorry if I'm going to sound harsh. Please learn from your experience.
-Sometimes, you just need to trust the judgment of the doctor, whether s/he has seen you or not.
-If you became nauseated on the medication, call the doctor. Let the doctor know. There are medications that you can be given for the nausea. Just like birth control pills, you might be able to avoid nausea by taking Provera with a meal.
-Whether or not this was a miscarriage was academic. The purpose of the Provera was to temporarily change your hormonal balance. I'm assuming the doctor wanted to see if that would control the bleeding until you came into the office.
-A lot of medications have a lot of extremely dangerous sounding side effects. They have to be put into perspective. When is the last time you studied all the fine print about Tylenol or Motrin? Read up on them, you'd be amazed. Yet you probably keep them around for your family in adult and pediatric dosages for pain and fever ... and that is a relatively safe thing to do.
-A woman came to our ER last week. She had been bleeding heavily for a few weeks on a low dose birth control pill. She didn't tell her OB/GYN who probably would have altered the hormonal balance of her pills (had he known).
-She was not pregnant. She needed 2 blood transfusions and was admitted to the hospital for a probably D&C.
-The risks/benefits from blood transfusions vs. the risks/benefits from Provera?
Good luck and please get to your doctor ASAP!!
