My Daughter Nose Is Raw from a Cold

Any ideas on how to prevent the raw, sore nose from wiping a runny nose? My 9 month old cries when I come near her with a Kleenex. I already use the one with lotion.

What can I do next?

I've used this stuff called Ayr - it's a light gel that you put around the nose like you would vaseline but it's very lightweight and really helps to clear the congestions while it protects the skin. I love it and my daughter doesn't mind when I put it on her. Good luck.

Try to wash with warm water and put a little vaseline or tripple antibiotic ointment around the red parts nose. It will keep the salt from irritating it, after a couple of days it should look and feel better. I even use the warm washcloth instead of tissue, it is sometimes more comforting.

Lotion tissues do not provide enough viscosity to keep from irrating the nose more.. Use plain old vaseline. Dip the kleenex in it before you wipe the babies nose. They still won't like the clean up, but the nose will begin to heal and the action won't be as painful.

My daughter is now almost 8 and I always have used aquaphor on her nose - even on her cheeks when she was little and used to get wind-burned. I still use aquaphor on her nose at the first sign of a cold to prevent it from getting red and sore. It works wonders!

Hi L., My son gets a terrible raw red nose with his colds every year. Try putting on a Aquaphor. Its a vaseline like jelly that is really moisturizing. Its good for any chapped skin. Keep putting it on and once it starts to heal it will make her feel better. You might have to put it on everytime yopu wipe her nose. Usually in about a day or two. I would also keep using the kleenx with the lotion. That will keep the moisture in the skin too. Good luck :)

Our 6 month old is the same way. I put some vaseline on his nose when he's taking a nap or at bedtime. It really helps.

Hope she feels better soon.

Aquaphor is the best that I have found for any type of dry or irritated skin. I use it all the time on my girls especially my nine year old with Down's syndrome. She sometimes gets really dry cheeks and nose in the winter, I put aquaphor on any red spots and they are gone the next morning!

Hi L.,
Try rubbing petroleum jelly or lotion around her nose. This works well with my sons when their noses start getting sore. I guess it helps keep them moisturized. Hope it works well for you too.

Hi L.,
We have six children. When they have the non-stop runny noses with colds I slather vaseline on their noses at bedtime. When they awaken in the morning their noses are usually "as good as new". Well, as good as they are when they are not sick. Good luck,
M.

I have always used petroleum jelly, chap stick or some king of lip medex stuff. Anything to help put a barrier on the skin from all that moisture. Easiest time to coat her nose will be when she sleeps, from night to morn. you should see a good difference.

chapstix or moisture therapy lip balm from Avon i know that sounds weird but every time you wipe the nose just put the chapstix on it is very easy no fuss no muss & it works very fast just like on the lips & with it being in the tube form it fits real easy inside the little nostrils where its chapped as well

A girlfriend of mine uses Aquafor on her daughter's nose. She places some on a q-tip and puts it just in the base of her nostrils as well as the part that connects to the lip. Apparently the slight amount on the inside makes it less itchy thus prevents some of the future rawness on the outside. I haven't yet had to try it on my little guy but seems like it might do the trick. Good luck!

L.,
Put Aquaphor on the irritated areas. I swear if you do this before bed it will be a ton better in the morning. I use Aquaphor on everything from chapped lips and nose to windburn. It's amazing stuff.

I use an over the counter product called Little Noses - its just a saline moisturizing gel, so it's not sticky, just a little wet. I use it when my nose gets raw too.

I don't have a cure for the red nose, however, I do have a trcik to not getting the red noses in the first place. My husband and I stumbled upon this on accident when our baby had a runny nose and we ran out of kleenex, we started wiping her nose with baby wipes. It worked WONDERS!!! She has not had another red nose since, and she is now 8 :)
My sister is a pediatrician, and she now tells her patients this trick. Good Luck!
