I was looking at a tribute page to 9/11 and my daughter started asking me alot of questions about the pics she seen so I thought it was time to sit her down and explain to her what happen on 9/11 and I told her all about it and what people and familys had and are still going threw so she made a pic and told me to send it to the people that had to jump out the windows family she wanted me to tell them Thank U for helping all of us! I just started crying it was so sad and she asked me Mom if my Dad becomes a Cop will those bad people want him to die to? I thought I was going to have a break down right there so I had to explain to her how her daddy was doing this to not only help people but to also better our family so she said I dont want anything anymore ~lol~ Really I want to just scream! Soon she really had me worring about him and his carrer and if shes always going to worry about him! More scarred then I thought!

What can I do next?

She's honestly got a very healthy view of it right now.
As a child, it's only natural that she gets a little scared over events such as 9/11 and her father joining a more hazardous line of work. But it's the rationalizing it to herself that will take time. And so far, she sounds like she's doing a good job of it.

I have to commend you for taking on such a difficult conversation at a young age. And from her response, you did it just fine.
Have her talk to her father now to finish rationalizing it in her mind and she should be at ease in a few days.

I agree with the last mom, and I only have one additional idea. Schedule a visit to the Police/Fire Station. Where I live they are right next to each other. She can see all the other Police officers and how they are okay and then the Fire Department is the best (IMO) b/c they get to see all the tucks and (hopefully) play on them. I did that with the oldest two when their mom was working as a corrections officer and they decided they didn't like PO (no idea how they made those dots connect). Also, you could point out POs helping other people when driving somewhere or at the mall. Best of Luck and Thank you for the sacrafices your family is willing to make to keep the rest of us safe!

Hi C.! Is your daughter in preschool at all? My brother is a police officer in town and I have considered asking him to come to her preschool to talk to the kids about what it is to be a police officer - and show them his cruiser, lights, etc. In "kid" terms! I think this would be very helpful to ease your daughter's fears and help her to see that they are GOOD GUYS that help everyone in your community. Not only to keep the bad guys from hurting others, but to keep everyone safe and out of harms way - and what a dedication and honor it is to do this. Kudos to your husband - you must be very proud of him!

Hi C.! I'm the proud wife of a police officer and we have two children. My daughter, who is also four, knows that daddy's job is to catch bad guys and help other people. I am friends with other police wives and of course our kids play together. It's a nice support system to have. My daughter used to seeing our friends in uniform, has checked out the "company" car, has visited the police station and knows the Eddie Eagle poem for gun safety. We also tell him to "be safe" before he leaves for work.

You can't drive yourself crazy with "what ifs". Being a police officer is not just a job, its part of my husband and I understand that. Enjoy your family and be proud!
