My baby girl is 4 months and she is normally a pooper every day and since she has been eating rice cereal she sometimes poops every other day. Well it has been 3 days and she is MISERABLE!!!! I have tried the thermometer trick, rubbing her belly and tonight I only gave her pears instead of rice with it. Is there any other ideas you might have??? I am sure I will run into this time and time again and I appreciate any help you might have!!! THANKS
I do also breastfeed only no formula at all....I am trying to prune method first and then will try the rest but since I have never given her a bottle I am not sure on the things to add to a bottle method. I have been doing the bicycle legs all the time and the warm bath twice but so far no poop and we are on day number 4!!!! I will keep you all posted. I hope she goes soon since we just gave her the prunes mixed with pears at 12 noon today!!! Thanks for everyones advice so far!!
WE FINALLY ARE GETTING SOMEWHERE!!!! She finally pooped today a very little at around one then finally some more a few minutes ago!!!! I think those prunes are working!!! You all are so wonderful!!! Thanks for everything!!!
Thanks for all the posts...but my daughter is fine now. She actually goes poop EVERY day and I didn't have to change her food. I just added prunes for a few days and no problems since. Thanks again for the inputs!!

My oldest daughter was the exact same age when she had a bout with constipation and I gave her first foods peaches and it did the trick. If it is real bad call the doctor or pharmacist and ask about a gliseren (sp?) suppository. Hope this helps.

my son had that same problem, still does, Dr. told us no apple or bananas, they tend to consitpate and to give him undiluted prune juice, or apricots. when my son starts to have trouble we give him a little prune juice and he loves it.

We did the glicerin things up the bottom with our daughter, it worked but yuck! We later learned to add a tsp. of karro syrup to the bottle - it worked nicely. Heck, she's almost 5 and when she has a tummy ache from being constipated she'll ASK for the karro!

My 8 month old has fought constipation off and on since he was 2 weeks old. His pediatrician says to give him the baby juice in either apple juice or prune juice. For him it usually takes the whole 4 ounces to unblock him, but if your daughter has never had it, you should start her out at only 2 ounces. Also, if you have regular juice that kids and adults normally drink you can dilute it one ounce water to one ounce juice and safely give to her.
Good Luck!

Gerber makes apple prune juice. Dilute it with 1/2 water and give her a few ounces of it. Also, lie her on her back and make bicycle motions with her legs. This helped my daughter when she was a baby and this is what the nurse at the pediatrician's office always recommended.
Good luck!

I have been where you are many times, and have lots of suggestions for you! First, switch from rice cereal to oatmeal. Second, include prunes in your daughter's diet daily until she gets regular again. For tough cases, like not having a BM for two or three days, put a teaspoon or two of Karo syrup in one of her bottles or cereal. Beware the blowout diaper after this. As a final option, buy some baby laxative and give her some help. I've used Babylax (liquid bulb of glycerin.) I did not use the whole bulb at one time.
Hope this helps.

K.

my pedi dr gave me some insight to this prob. You may already know, but here it is anyways!
-Push fruits (but avoid bananas-they make it worse)
-push liquids in general - water, pear juice and prune juice are the best.
-watch which formulas you use. If they are high in iron, they will make it worse. Concider using a different type with lower iron for a while
-water down the cereal
-let her body adjust to baby food - all kids require an adjusting time. Start slow!

Just want to agree with Kelly K. Karo syrup works wonders...even with older children. I have used it successfully with both my children and children I've babysat for recently. Excuse my for the graphic nature, but it does help things just slide right through.
Good luck. I understand how worried we mom's get when this occurs. Not to mention, the fact that we HATE to see our kids uncomfortable.
My best to you!

YOu can also try giving her a little prunes (the jarred kind, like your pears) with the rice cereal. Also, when you have her lying on her back, try rotating her legs in a motion like she's riding a bike. That always helped my girls. Good luck! And, remember, this too shall pass!

I had the samr problem and my pedi suggested pedialyte(sp) and it works really well. I gove him 1 oz of the pedialyte and the I pour just a splash of water. and with in 1 hour hes pooping. Also the gas drops help, you can put them in the bottle rather than fight to get them down there mouth with the dropper. Oh, and if you push there knees up into there stomach it helps them push out.
Hope this helps!

Try giving your baby 1oz of baby apple juice to 1oz of water. The doctor tells you to try everything else I am guessing because they don't want you to introduce a sugary drink to your baby yet. But I went through the same thing with my 2 month old baby and the apple juice worked great. Within a couple of hours he went.

Babies have a hard time digesting sugar. It makes them have diarrhea. You can give your daughter some diluted 100% apple juice. Half water, half juice. That should help her soften her stool enough for her to poop. We had this problem with my daughter regularly because she was on formula that made her constipated. This always did the trick. You can also feed her prunes or if it gets too bad, go to the store and buy infant suppositories. Hope this helps.

You should call her pediatrician and ask about giving her Milk of Magnesia. My son had this problem frequently for several months, and our GI doctor told us to give him a teaspoon of it. It works great. It's gentle on them, and usually we had result within 12 hours. I'd be sure to call and check w/her doc though.

Well here you go all of the tried and true methods have already been shared but, here you go I will put them in one. Dark Karo syrup just put a good little drop, probably a 1/2 a tsp, into his bottle. (If you are not nursing). With our oldest, now 4, we actually switched to soy formula and that helped too. The glycerin suppositories work great. Used that with both of my boys. Prunes work wonders. For me the prune baby food worked better than the juice, but the juice worked well. With my daughter, 6 months old, we just have prunes in her diet like we do any other fruits or vegetables and have not had any clogging issues with her as of yet. Knock on wood. Good Luck!

C., First off- I am a health minister and I help people all the time with their health issues. My advise is to get your baby of that gluey, constipating rice goo and keep her off. There is 0 nutritional value in it and her body knows it. She will never tolerate it. Next I would go and get some baby gliserine suppositories to relieve the current constipating, toxic condition that she is experiencing. How old is she? When things settle down give her live, fresh fruits, avacados, and steamed or boiled veggies that you can mash like mashed potatoes. She has been a raw foodist since birth why stop now?

I used the Karo syrup in small amount of water given by bottle--it worked like a charm. Also, sweet potatoes have a laxative effect. The four things one eats after a bout of gastroenteritis to help "thicken" things up are: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. (BRAT diet) So, it stands to reason that those 4 things tend to constipate if not balanced with some other "fiberous" type foods.

All the advice sounds pretty right on. Definately try to switsh to oatmeal or do no ceral since your baby is so young. My Pedi told us that apple is the most constipating and to use pear juice. For our new baby she reconended Gerbers electrolyte juice. It looks like gerber juice, but is like pediolyte. It is good cuz it is in 8oz bottles. You can find it at CVS or Wallgreens.

This happened with my baby as well when he was about 3 1/2 months old. The doctor actually told me that babies sometimes just change their habits and being constipated doesn't mean not pooping. Constipation is when they pass hard dry stool. My son would have a bowel movement twice a day every day and then when we started rice cereal he just stopped. He went 8 days without bowel movements, I tried Karo syrup, prunes, themometer, even the doctor. He had the most horrible gas and seemed miserable. The doctor didn't want me to use laxatives because he said that the baby can sometimes become dependent on needing them for a bowel movement. Just try to be calm, snuggle your baby as much as possible and keep him on his belly as much as possible. This lasted for me for about a month and a half and then I think his system just got used to the food and he is back on track. Just give it time.

The only thing that worked for my daughter was prunes or prune juice. Before she was eating foods I would put a 1/2 oz of prune juice in her bottle 2 times a say for 2-3 days or until she was finally "unplugged". Not only did it work but she LOVED how sweet it was so sucked that bottle down fast. With eating foods I would mix a little prune baby food in with her cereal for 2-3 days until the same. It always worked like a charm. Prune juice has to be used within 72 hours of opening so I got the 6 packs of little cans and then always had them on hand! Best of luck! :)

You can try baby food prunes, but just a bite or two -- it doesn't take much for the very opposite effect!
You might have less chance of an explosion with an ounce of apple juice twice a day. We use apple juice to keep my son regular. He gets some every morning with breakfast.
Going forward, you might try to keep an eye on what foods might have caused her problem. Bananas are really bad. When my son even had one bite of banana it would be 5 days before his next (very hard and painful) BM.

I would say cut down on that rice cereal if it makes your baby so miserable. Rice does not have fiber and is notorious for causing little tummies to plug. 4 months is a little too early for starting solids anyway. My pedi did not recommend any until after 6 months and we had to switch to oatmeal because rice made my baby very constipated too (no poop for up to a week!!!). After 6 months you will be more comfortable to intervene with fruits/juices to relieve constipation without causing allergies.

I also had this problem with both of my kids. Rice is the worst for constipation. I would use the Babylax glycerin suppositories (you may have to ask the pharmacist for them since some pharmacies keep them behind the counter). I would also switch to oatmeal as soon as possible. Mix it with apple or prune juice to start. You can probably do the oatmeal with breastmilk after she starts to get regular again.

Hi C.,
The stage 1 prunes worked great for us. My daughter loved them because of the sweetness so it worked great. She never like juice when she was little so a little bit of that worked every time.
My son was terribly constipated when I moved to cereal in his formula. I asked the pedi what I should do because he was crying when he tried to go to the bathroom. She told me to give him some apple juice, with half water and half juice. Or I like to give that prune/apple juice they have in the baby food isle, or give your baby the prune baby food. Worked like a charm..
