HI there,

I have a rare evening with just me and my 9 year old daughter. I thought it would be fun to watch a movie together that was just one for the two of us. Any good girly movie suggestions for us?

thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your suggestions! We ended up with Beezus and Ramona, and she loved it. I think she loved me painting her nails and drinking root beer floats as much, but the movie was a hit and not a hard one for me to watch either! Bonus!
I'm keeping your other suggestions in the hopper for next time!

The Princess Diaries (W/ Anne Hathoway?)

~Has she seen The Princess Bride yet? It is a 'love story' after all...doesn't get much more 'girlie' than that!

I'd 2nd (or 3rd or 4th or 5th?) Princess Bride, but be aware (if it is something that you pay attention to) that there is some mild swearing in it. I watched it as a young adult and LOVED it. Watched it multiple times and laughed all the way through every time. Years went by and I thought it would be something my kids would enjoy. So we put it on....
I was unprepared for some of the language. Again, it is very mild, but your mind doesn't register ANY of it when you are 20 and so I thought it was a totally clean movie.

So, while I highly recommend it, I would be aware, if that is something that you monitor. You can do the imbd thing and see exactly what the language usage is. It has been several years (again) since I have seen it and can't remember details.

For something REALLY old, how about the movie versions of A Little Princess or The Secret Garden (based on the books by Frances Burnett Hodges). My 7 year old girl has loved both of them, and we're reading The Secret Garden as our bedtime book now. They would probably work very well for a 9 year old. Both books have the girl character being orphaned at the beginning and A Little Princess features a nasty schoolmistress, however both stories have interesting development in the main characters and give that feeling of visiting another time and place. The Secret Garden might work particularly well. Or take her to pick the video/DVD out at the local library/videostore/Red Box. In any case, have a lovely time--my daughter and I did a movie together last Sunday, and it was great.

How about The Man From Snowy River? Pretty tame love story but with action and horses galore. Princess Bride is still one of my favorites!!

Soul Surfer

Hannah Montana - The Movie (before you barf, this is actually a very entertaining movie, good clean cut, no bad language, does not reflect the prissy attitude of the stupid Disney show, very thought provoking about who you are and who you can be, and the songs are really cute)

Brave

Anything with Josh Hutcherson in it from his early days (according to my friend's 8 going on 21 yr old daughter) but NOT Hunger Games.

If you want one that you'll enjoy as much as she does, and that features a very smart and resourceful young girl as the heroine -- try "Nim's Island." Not a fairy-tale princess in sight, just a very cool story line, some very funny adults and a very ingenious girl. (No offense at all to "The Princess Bride," another of our favorites but for very different reasons!). "Tangled" is also good (even my husband likes it a lot!). But if she's more into live-action movies and you don't mind watching handsome Gerard Butler....try Nim.
