I highly recommend ginger capsules. There are no side effects and they have been proven to work just as well as drammamine, if not better. Hope this helps.
We are going out of town next week and I'm looking for recommendations on a motion sickness medicine for my 7 year old daughter that does not cause drowsiness. We have a 4 hour flight then a 2 hour car ride.
I highly recommend ginger capsules. There are no side effects and they have been proven to work just as well as drammamine, if not better. Hope this helps.
Go to any Motherhood store and buy Preggie Pops in the suckers or candies. I highly recommend them! They have worked for my children, me, and other people I know who have tried them who have problems with motion sickness.
I do not know the exact name BUT there is actually a bracelet that you can buy that pushes a pressure point in the wrist that help ease and ward off motion sickness my best friends daughter has it and she loves them ! GL!
I have used sea bands as an adult, but I am not sure if they come in children's sizes. You may want to ask a pharmacist to special order them.
The way they work is to put pressure on the wrists to stabilize the sensation of motion.
I got carsick as a child and always took Dramamine, but I recall that it knocked me completely out. They may make a more non-drowsy form now. Also, motion sickness is caused when the ear senses movement, but the eyes are fixated on a stationary object. The imbalance of the two causes the queasiness. I would discourage her from reading, coloring, etc in the car, and encourage her to look out the window. Maybe play some car games that look for different cars or objects as they pass. I hope this helps!
the offer a wrist band at dive shops that stops the motion sickness. It is made for divers, but works!! I have friends and people I know that have used it on cruises, and flights. It is not a medicine, it works on a pressure point on your wrist. Much better, no side effects, and not needed until you feel sick, then it is instant!!
Good luck!

Dramimine has a formula for non drowsy and it last for 24 hours. It is usually next to regular dramimine. I also always keep gum handy. Especially for ascent and descent on flight. Good Luck!
My daughter always got car sick. We learned to put her near the front of the van, she did better it seemed. Also we made sure she ate before we got on the road. But what really helps her is ginger tea. There is Tummy Care tea which has ginger & works great and some other out there as well. Also, we've just discovered tonic water is great at soothing upset stomachs. Also have her close her eyes whenever she starts to feel queasy. It's her brains inability to process her body movement vs what she's seeing.
Hope she does well, it's not fun for sure.
Ginger has been found in studies to be just as effective as dramamine. Must be given at least two hours before travel. Crystalized ginger or ginger cookies are your best bet.
I used to get terribly car sick a a child and someone introduced me to sea sickness wrist bands, (I think they had the brand name SeaBands, but it has been a while since I bought them). The ones I had were a gray knit fabric with a plastic ball imbedded and you positioned the ball on your wrist, about 3 finger widths up the arm. They worked!! I wore them on nearly every trip until I was in my mid-20's and even when I was morning sick during my pregnancy.
I have not seen them in Wal-Mart and similar stores recently, but you might look in drug stores and I am sure they are available over the internet.
Again, I know it sounds strange, but I cannot tell you the difference I felt. I could even cross stitch in the car with them on, but would get sick if I forgot them.
I agree with the ginger suggestion, but my son won't drink tea, so I always gave him ginger capsules. "Myth Busters" on tv compared various cures for motion sickness, and ginger did as well as the prescription patches.
They make wrist bands that apply pressure to a point which helps control nausea. You can find them in drug stores. I know people have used them for morning sickness.
I would recommend checking out Whole Foods in East Memphis. I know they carry all natural remedies for motion sickness.
Ginger is a natural stomach aid. I make ginger cookies when we're going to fly. You can also get in in pills.
Good luck!
If ginger is the key, there is a soft chewy candy called Ginger Chews made by the Ginger People and is distributed out of California by Royal Pacific Foods. I found them in health food store/naturopaths office, but I have seen them around in places like gourmet shops. There is also a website called www.thegingerpeople.com and their phone is 1-800-551-5284; e-mail is ____@____.com also sell other ginger products so check it out. These candies may be a bit zingy (or as they call them hot) but very gingery as they are made with 8% fresh ginger. They are also good when sick with a tummy virus or just when the tummy feels a bit off. Good Luck!
The main ingredient in dramamine is the same as the one in many antihistamines (dr. told me this years ago). If you can find a non drowsy antihistamine it works, I used it many times when my child was young and had bad motion sickness.
Our family uses generic Dramamine, but we use 1/4 pill per female, and my husband uses 1/2 pill. We do this every time we ride roller coasters at theme parks. Works great.
Hi S.,
I agree that Ginger and the motion sickness bracelets (that you can pick up at any CVS or Walgreen's) work very well. I used to be very sick like that until I realized that it has to do with proper spinal alignment and also your immune system health. I know you need a quick fix right now, but if you want information on how she can get rid of it long term, let me know. I'd love to share.
Regards,
Ginger works wonders for motion sickness. I have suffered from motion sickness all my life, and I discovered a couple of years ago that nibbling on ginger snap cookies keeps me from getting sick while traveling. The ginger is a natural herb that works to soothe the stomach, and it works! Drugs for motion sickness have never really worked for me. Also, when riding in a car, riding in the back seat is a disaster for anyone prone to motion sickness. I ride in the front seat whenever possible. Hope this helps!
We used Dramaming, you buy it at the grocery store. We used it for our 3 yr old and we gave her a 1/2 pill. They are chewable and it seemed to work fine. She used to throw up when we traveled! Have fun.
