I was somewhat surprised when I went to the Dr. for something else...and came home with a positive pregnancy test result! We're excited...my husband moreso...I'll get excited when I can brush my teeth without barfing. Anyway...my question...I've had morning sickness with all of my pregnancies...I've gotten better about just forcing myself to nibble on stuff throughout the day...keep stuff in my stomach...etc. Problem with this pregnancy - I am ONLY craving fruits and vegetables...and they just don't keep me full for very long...so I'm constantly hungry...which is so not helping the morning sickness. The thought of meat and dairy makes me want to gag. Beans....are ok...sometimes they stay down...sometimes not. I all but lived off strawberries yesterday...then had some homemade chinese eggplant for dinner. I felt like I was starving all day!! Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am on prenatals - thank goodness for gummies!! I can stomach some cereal about once a day...I've done a little tiny bit of yogurt and occasionally I'll do a reliv smoothie (protein from the powder and milk, calcium from the milk)...I'm sure that's helping some...it's the constant hunger that is driving me bonkers :p. I usually only have a month or so of extreme morning sickness...and if someone else prepares the food...it makes a world of difference. If we were rich...I think I'd just order out ever meal. shucks :p. Thank you all soooo much for the suggestions...there are some really good ones...mixed in with some sympathy here and there - which is also good :) Thanks!!

Avocado, it is a good one, because it also has essential (good) fats and protein. Also try cashews, or a good trail mix with dried fruit too.

I will also add, hard boiled or deviled eggs, they have that cool feeling like a fruit/veggie would, but they also have the protein you need. So do cheesesticks... it's not typical dairy like milk or yogurt would be.

Add peanut butter to what you can. Peanut butter on apples, or on celery. You have that nice, cool crunch you are craving, but you are getting some protein as well. Peanut butter on crackers or whole wheat toast too, you need the protein with carbs to help you get some energy and to aid in absorption.

I'm pregnant as well and these are some of my go to foods when I can keep little else down. Well, those and black eyed peas and baked potatoes. And a nice dose of Zofran. Ask your Dr for a prescription, it will help greatly with the nausea.

Eat more fruits and veggies. Eat constantly. Always have them with you, always be putting them in your mouth.

Also, water. That could help.

Be grateful it's fruits and veggies! I had a hard time landing on anything that didn't make me nauseated and I put on 18 pounds by week 12 just trying to stay comfortable!

Avacado
edemame
maybe even tofu? It's still plant based but would have some substance....

Maybe an enormous veggie stir fry, some brown rice and a little tofu or some peanuts for protein?

How about some seeds on your green veggie salads? Sunflower or pumpkin?

Could you manage some high protein Greek yogurt on your baked potato?

Nutritional yeast is a complete protein.... Tastes kind of nutty ... I love it on steamed veggies. You can find nutritional yeast at health food stores.

I hope you feel better soon!

Have you tried making smoothies? If you are good with fruits and veggies makes some smoothies and try adding to them, whether it's yogurt plain (not flavored) protein powder, even finely ground oatmeal. You'll still be getting just the taste of the fruits (but throw some veggies in there if you're up for it!), so maybe that will work! Texture is always a huge issue for me during pregnancy so I'm not sure if the texture of smoothies would get to you or not, but definitely worth a try. :) Good luck-hope it passes quickly and you are feeling better soon!

Eat away at those fruits and veggies! They are good for you.

I was similar with my first pregnancy - I wanted little other than peaches, apricots, and carrots those first few months. I suppose baby needed vitamin A. Anyway, if you can stomach it, eat leafy greens and tofu for calcium and nuts and beans in lieu of meat for protein. Also try yogurt - for some reason for me, while milk made me gag, plain yogurt with fruit and a little honey went down well and stayed down. And if you can stand to eat eggs (I couldn't - just the smell of them cooking made me queasy), there's another protein source.

Ideally, the queasy stage will pass in a few months and your options will open up.

You need to juice your fruits and veggies. You can get up to 10 times more which will fill you up and keep you satisfied. I was like this with all 4 of mine and I also ate all day. I just kept a tray of veggies out and a bag of fruit. Probably about every 20 minutes I ate. I also juiced up to 4 times per day. Couldn't touch meat, dairy or starch until about the 5th month.

Good luck!

I'm pregnant right now too, but just thinking of a hard boiled jiggly egg makes me want to barf. I'm able to eat scrambled eggs however, especially spiced up. I tried opening a yogurt, and after one bite I had to chuck it. What I've been having to eat to get through the day without barfing: toast, saltines, cereal, ginger-ale, and sweet cold fruit - mainly peaches. The thing I've been craving for dinner are hamburgers. Juicy iron-filled restaurant burgers (and not from a fast-food joint). You might be surprised at how good it tastes right about now. Or maybe it will taste better at the second trimester. Adding peanut butter to whatever you can is a great idea. You know what I'm totally surprised at - I love love love coffee / mochas, but I can hardly stomach even a little bit right now. I'm practically falling asleep at my desk all day.

Girl, for about 4 weeks all I ate was clementines and frozen lemonade, so I understand! I couldn't get enough citrus (no kidding, one day I ate 14 clementines because I was starving and couldn't eat anything else). I like Momma L's advice. And I'm going to make sure I do that next time around!

Sounds like my first 5 months of pregnancy. I just managed to eat what I can. You may want to add crackers, rice, oatmeal to your diet and know that this too shall pass.

I could also eat cereal but with next to no milk. Hang in there this is over quickly and then you have a new baby to take care of.

Hi--
I like the smoothie idea---get rice protein to add to it, and add something like flax seeds for the protein and the fiber--it will keep you full longer (and the omega 3's are great for you)

Also, have you tried the motion sickness bands on your wrists? You can get them at Walgreen's. They sit on the acupuncture point for nausea and the worked great for me.

Congrats!!

It's better than craving MacDonalds!!!

Somehow, you HAVE to get plenty of protein. Figure out what you need and get it somehow. The baby's BRAIN needs it, and it's your job to get it. It doesn't mean you have to eat meat. Find an alternative source you can stomach. Herbalife has protein powder that you can order, and you can make a shake using it - add in some spinach (you can't taste it) and fruits.

Did you buy pregnancy vitamins? You need folic acid NOW to help prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida and some forms of cleft palate. All fetuses have cleft palates until 8 weeks gestation, and they close. Those kids who have cleft palates at birth didn't have clefts that closed when they were supposed to. Getting enough folic acid won't prevent ALL of them, but at least you would rule out the lack of folic acid. And spina bifida is worse than a cleft palate and you really need that folic acid to prevent that.

Getting protein in some form will keep you from being hungry. And you HAVE to get the calcium even if you can't drink milk. If you made a shake, a smoothie, could you put milk in that? What about yogurt? Chobani's Greek yogurt has 19 to 22 grams of protein per serving, if you can stomach yogurt. It's also delicious. I have found it at Target.

Careful of too many strawberries. I ate too many my freshman year in college and ended up getting hives from them. I had to go 4 years without eating them. Now I only eat a few at a time, and not every day... I love them and don't want to have hives again or go another 4 years before getting to have any...

Hope you can do these things - good luck!

Dawn
