Hello all,

I have a friend who is now 2 months pregnant and is unable to hold anything down. She has had to go to the hopsital because she is throwing up so much and is getting dehydrated from it. Is there anything that she can take or do to keep her from throwing up so much. Is this normal? Has any one ever expericned this during their first few months? This is her first child and she is getting worried.

Thank you

I would like to thank all of you that helped give advice to my friend. She is now taking that Chemo pill to help keep her from throwing up.

Zofran (the chemo drug) is the only thing that helped me, although I only took it in the mornings due to cost, we spent about $750 a month...I just could not live without it though. Nothing else worked for me. Hopefully her nausia will subside after the first trimester (mine did not), in the meantime give Zofran a try. My OB-GYN used it herself, we both have smart, healthy kids...I was worried about taking drugs but it worked out well. Hang in there girl :)

Hi T.,

I can sympathize with your friend because I was also really sick during my pregnancy. For me it continued until about the halfway mark at 20 weeks or so.

My doctor put me on Zofran and Phenegren (spelling?). The Zofran gave me temporary relief but it was so expensive that I literally had to ration the medicine so that I was only taking it on special occasions. The Phenegren didn't do much for me but I've heard from other people who suffer badly from this that it did help them.

A friend of mine told me her doctor recommended taking a 1/2 tablet of Unisom and a 1/2 of a B6 vitamin together. I was nervous about taking the Unisom, but when I asked my own OB/Gyn about it she said it was safe since the active ingredients in it are like Benadryl. Anyway, this was my miracle cure. I don't know what's in the combination that takes the nausea away but it really works. After trying everything, it was so nice to find something that really provided some relief!

I had "morning" sickness that was really all day long sickness for the 1st 5 months of pregnancy. I also lost 13 lbs, and it took me to 34 weeks to even go over my prepregnancy weight. What worked for me was to eat the same bland food every day. When I found something that didn't make me sick, I kept eating it. I could only drink water and orange gatoraid for months, then I was finally able to add lemonade as a treat. The food items that worked for me were pretzels, baby carrots, oatmeal, and plain english muffins (nothing on them, stay away from butter). That was basically it. Good luck to her, I remember those days oh too well, and still cannot eat certain items that made me violently sick during my pregnancy.

I was very sick for 5 mos. as well. I tried preggie pops, bio bands, and even bland food. The phenergrin never worked for me but what did was the "chemo" drug everyone keeps referring to. That drug is "zofran". Most insurances will not cover this drug for pregnancy BUT if you get your doc to call the insurance company, they are likely to go ahead and allow it to be covered under your plan after the other drugs have "failed". It is approx. $25 a pill so it it well worth the hassle of having your doctor fight to get the medicine covered. Hope this helps!

I had terrible morning sickness with my last pregnancy. I lost 5 lbs the first month. My doctor suggested taking sips of water throughout the day. I also noticed that eating slowing and avoiding anything with oil, grease or butter helped. I would eat light foods and lie down afterwards. At first I would do everything not to throw up but that just made it worse. If she feels like throwing up, she should, then wait a bit and eat saltine crackers. If she can keep that down, then she should try a light meal. It did go away by the time I was 3 months otherwise I would have been put on anti-naseau medication. Hope this helps!

I have suffered from very severe all day nausea during my previous pregnancies (although I didn't throw up).

A friend gave my right away some homeopathic treatment that worked like a charm. The name is SEPIA. You may be able to purchase it at Whole Foods or Central Market. The measure is three little balls to place under the tongue and let them melt.

I really hope this helps. It's always worth trying, any relief would be good at this point, your friend must be so miserable...

Hi T.,
When I was pregnant I was sick for the full term of my pregnancy. I couldnt eat anything or could I even drink water!! I literally puked at least 10 times a day and was like a zombie. I was in the ER about twice aweek and admitted to stay over night 3 times until they got smart and then I got a home nurse after about 4 monoths into my pregnancy to take care of me. I was diagnosed with what is called Hyperemesis Gravidarum. They then stuck a tube in my arm and I was like an addict shooting my self up with Zofran needles all day long and getting sucrose water through the IV for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!! No fun! If your friend does have this tell her please not to give up. You go through so much pain and emotions and even want to give up on life itself whether it be yours or your unborn child. It will all be worth it! My daughter is now 10months and I am ready to have another one even if I do have to go through another nine months or pain.

Here is a good website for your friend to check out :

in my experience it's not that common but it's not abnormal. i have two work acquaintances who were so sick in their early months they were put on an anti-nauseau drug that chemotherapy patients take. perhaps she should ask her doctor about that option.

I had morning sickness all day with my last child for about 6 months and even lost 12 lbs. The doctor prescribed zofran (I think that is the name) you out it underneath your tongue and it dissolves. Eating light also helps saltine, Graham crackers, gatorade, sprite, nothing greasy, oily.

I remember not being able to keep anything down with my last child and feeling really nauseated with my 1st child for the 1st 4 months. I hear that this is common especially the 1st trimester.
Good luck and this shall pass.

I had hyperemisis gravidarum w/both pregnancies. It always seemed to be the worse when it was "suppose" to be that time of the month, I was always in the hospital once a month for dehydration, also. I had a Reglan pump on me also, but still vomitted even with continuous anti-nauseua (sp) going thru my blood system.

Nothing I tried worked, nothing, nothing, nothing. So, after many failed attempts, I decided to just eat what sounded good. I especially ate whatever when I was feeling good. Gatorade, powerade, crackers, ginger cookies, nothing worked.

My advice would to tell her to keep faith that it will end and the end product is well worth the visits to the ivory tower.

I had it w/both pregnancies from day 1 to birthing day also. Some days the nurse had to come to me w/an IV bag, because I couldn't make it to the hospital!

Just tell her to hang in there, get plenty of rest and let people take care of her. For some this goes away after a few months, for some not.

Hope this helps.

When I was preggo with my second child I was very sick and lost 10 pounds in the first 2 months. The doctor prescribed me the medicine that they put chemotherapy patients on but my insurance wouldnt cover it because it is redicuously expensive so my doctor prescribed me phenagrin and that worked ok. The thing that helped me most was chewing peppermint flavored gum and peppermints. When I was in the hospital after having my baby they were able to give me a few of the chemotherapy nausea medicine and it worked really well-so if her insurance will cover it tell her to get it, I think you could probably google it to get the name of it. My nausea ended at 24 weeks, hopefully hers doesnt last the whole pregnancy.
