Are there any mom inventors out there that have a successful story to share or who are going through the process of product development?

What can I do next?

I'm not exactly sure what you want, but I'll tell you my story. My daughter had learning disablilities when she was young, and we spent 2 years going through trainings and therapies until she was able to be successful in school without tutors, aides, or accommodations. For the last 8 years I have been providing some of those services locally. There are not many people out there providing one of those services, and parents could really use them! So I created a DVD and workbook series that I sell off my website. Since I did most of the up front work myself, the cost of the filming and graphic design was only $2000. I paid one company to be able to use their specific exercises, but the rest let me use theirs while only giving them copyright mentions. It cost me about $1000 to get my product copyrighted. I have a website with PayPal, cost me about $500 to get that set up. Sales are slow enough now that a friend of mine and I manufacture the DVDs and Workbooks. I have been marketing them at workshops I give monthly, and make about $1000 a month on the sales.

I am now working with a PR firm that specializes in social marketing. They know that I expect to eventually make 10 times the marketing cost of $500/month - in other words, make $5000 a month - as a result of the PR work they do. It is quite exciting, to go from teaching individual children, to being able to reach and help thousands of kids!

My advice? Fill a need at a price that people can afford, yet feel that they are getting their money's worth, and you can get paid for your time.

I love business and marketing, and would be happy to share any other information with you as you invent!

I have a product that I have finished and used in my home for the past 5 years. I had a product developer I was working with but it just got to expensive for me to continue. I know product works and is beneficial to all households with limited space and children. Unfortunately it will never go to market. I spent around $2000.00 and then gave up. They wanted another 14,000.00 to put it in production and just didn't have that.

Hi L.! I have an in home business making preemie dolls (remembermepreemie.com) & I volunteer at my son's NICU. They asked me to design a sling to help the tiny babies get held more so my husband deisgned the sling & I make them. I got a patent pending on my sling & the hospital has ordered 10. My only problems right now are getting the $2008 for an FDA registration (so hospitals are more willing to buy my product) & the $500+ it takes to get my patent. I looked into a patent atterney & he was going to charge me $4000 - $5000 to do the patent for me. I would love to have someone who knows what they are doing do the patent for me, but it is just too expensive.
Anyway, back to your question. Developing & having the hospital trial the slings was very time consuming. The nurses would give me more suggestions on how to make the sling work better, then I would make another & start all over again. I also had to figure out the cost of each sling & the cost of my wage for making them. It took a few months to perfect the slings & now I'm just ready to market & sell them.
I hope your product goes smoothly!

God bless!
