I live in Gilbert and I'm doing the 7-mile Turkey Trot through the City of Mesa Parks and Rec department on Thanksgiving morning (I believe Gilbert does one as well). I'm also doing Gilbert's "12 ks of Christmas" held on December 12 at Freestone Park. It's a 12k, which is about 7.5 miles, and everyone in the race is given a Santa Hat to wear, there's a Santa costume contest (who the heck would want to run in a Santa costume???) and at each kilometer there will be a choir singing various Christmas songs. As part of the same thing, people can also run/bike/pull decorated wagons in a 1.2k family fun run. The whole thing should be fun and festive. I've never run more than 4 miles at once, so I'm trying to build that up, but I did my first mini triathlon last May and LOVED it. Maybe look into that. I loved the variety and challenge that doing three different events offered (1/2 mile swim, 3 mile run, 14 mile bike ride). The Sherox triathlon in Tempe is a very well-run triathlon held every May (my husband did his first tri in May that was put on by a different company and it wasn't near as good an experience as mine was). My sister and some neighborhood friends and I did it together. So FUN and exhilarating and rewarding!
