Moms, I'm curious... I just started my period today, and it's dark red. Usually at the beginning I have a tiny amount of dark red, followed by a heavier flow of the regular bright red. Last night I had the traces of the dark, then today the heavier flow began, but instead of bright red, it's dark... almost brown. Not sure if that's normal or not. Usually by the end of my flow days, it's dark, which has always been for me and normal as far as I know. This is different for me. I've had a bit more stress than usual, but nothing different with my diet or lifestyle... Just curious if anyone else has had this issue and if it's nothing to worry about. Thanks, Moms!!

So What Happened?

Thanks, Moms. Feel silly asking this type of question considering I've had my period for almost 20 years... but sometimes you just don't know :) Thanks again!

It's normal. Well, at least in my world it was. It would vary now and then, it always causes a tad of concern. I'm sure you will be bright red by morning. Oh the joy.

Different hormone levels lead to a different flow most of the time.

Usually "brown" flow is indicative of last month's flow... you know, a little stays behind.. In my 20s - 30s.. my cycle often started with brown and then the next day or two it became redder and heavier.. I don't think it's anything to worry about perse.. Do know that cycles change all throughout our lives. If you experience too much pain or major clotting, then you might want to see your Gyn ... just to be on the safe side...

Sometimes if it sits around inside for a while, it's darker. That can relate to your activity level. Unless it's full of big clots or is otherwise very different in terms of the amount of flow, I wouldn't worry. I used to work in a women's clinic, and we worked with patients a lot who had varying periods.
