Measuring 3-4 Weeks More than I Should...

Hi moms, this is my first post and I am hoping you can help me out. I am a first time mom, 33 weeks pregnant. I went to my check up yesterday and my doctor told me that she is going to send me for an ultrasound next week because I am measuring 3-4 weeks more than I should be. I was so preoccupied with other things in my head that I did not drill her at the moment and have all these questions going on in my head that will likely not be answered until I am back in her office in two weeks. So I am wondering if this happened to any of you, and what it meant? Did you deliver early? Were you induced?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice, they helped calm me down... although I never made it to my ultrasound as my water broke a few days after my post and I delivered my baby at 33 weeks. He is doing fine now after spending 2 weeks in the NICU. We are thrilled to have our baby home with us. I am not sure that measuring bug had anything to do with me delivering a premature baby... although he was big, he was 5 lbs 10 oz (he would have been a very big full term baby).

Thank you all again for your support!
A.

I wouldn't worry too much about measuring big. When I was pregnant with my son I measured 2-3 weeks larger at almost every visit. I ended up having 6 ultrasounds during my pregnancy including one the day before I delivered. At that ultrasound they estimated my son would be well over 9 lbs. He was only 7lbs 4ozs and he was born a week early. I think every person carries differently and can even do so at different times in their pregnancy. I wish you the very best!

I measured 3 weeks too big for a long time, and when we went to the ultrasound we found out that my son was laying on his side! :) In the end, I was only 4 days early...though my son was 9 pounds!

Good luck!

Adriana,

Don't worry about a thing! The ultrasound is just to see how big the baby is (approximately) and its position. I measured several weeks larger than normal and since both my husband and I are tall there was speculation about us having a very big baby. The ultrasounds estimated he would be between 8 and 9 pounds, still very much in the normal range. When he was born he was actually 7 lbs 8 oz.

Ultrasounds are strange things. The margin of error for calculating weight is 1 lb, which is quite a lot in a newborn. When had our ultrsound they detected a shadow on the baby's left shoulder or neck. Of course, I totally freaked out. The doctors didn't do much to ease my worrying either, although they weren't mean, they were just all business. I was sent to a specialist at Hackensack Hospital who did not detect anything but wouldn't say there was nothing there. Then I went to a specialist in Manhattan who explained that ultrasounds are shadows and he didn't detect anything either. He put my mind at rest by saying that I would have a completely normal baby. My doctor recommended a C-Section just to be on the safe side and my completely normal, 7 1/2 lb baby boy was born 10 days before my due date.

So the moral of the story is, your baby is just fine. He or she is either a big healthy baby or a normal baby in a sideways position.

Good Luck.

if you are taller or larger to begin with - then of course you will measure larger. Dont believe the ultra sound either. I measured larger- had 3 sonograms that said I was going to deliver a large baby; they wouldn't induce me because they said large babies that are induced get stuck. They expected him to be ove 9 1/2 pounds at 42 weeks- but he was 8.3 and flew out when they induced me. You just never know. Good luck.
