Baby Measureing Big

I have asked about this before but now I have a different question. I am at 24 weeks and just had our second ultrasound, one at 20 weeks and now this one at 24. I am having a little girl and she is measureing 2 weeks bigger, so 26 weeks unstead of 24. I know my due date is right because we did have an ultrasound at 8 weeks.
Anyway I am a sceduled c-section at the end of April but my worry is going into labor earlier because she is so big. Has anyone had this measureing big problem and if so did you go into labor, how early? thanks

What can I do next?

In my experience (same issue both times) and from a variety of sources, those measurements don't mean much of anything. I don't understand why they even bother. The reality is that the earlier the unltrasound the more relaible. As I stated both of mine measured large and and neither resulted in early labor or even a particularly large baby. In fact for my second, the delivering physician (not my OB) asked if he was a premie, because he had a lot of vernix.

My daughter also measured big but I didn't go into labor early. I was induced 10 days early and it went as smoothly as labor can go. haha She ended up being 7.12 and was perfect. I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck and congrats on #2!! :)

My daughter(now almost 4) measured big as well, I was too measured 2 weeks bigger. The scheduled a C-Section at 39 weeks and I did not go into labor early. I would imagine if I would have gone into labor earlier they would have just done the C-Section early. She was bigger than average 8lbs. 14oz. but they expected her to be bigger, other than being big she was perfectly healthy =)

Good luck and I would not worry about it to much, I know it is easier said that done.

Both of my boys measured big, but the first one was conceived by artificial insemination, so we knew exactly when the due date was. Both were high risk pregnancies with many complications. The first was induced 4 weeks early because of preeclampsia, and he weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces and was fine and healthy (though not as big as the u/s was measuring). My youngest son was a scheduled c-section 3 weeks early because he was simply running out of room, and I had tons of other complications (gestational diabetes, dehydration, etc.). I'm 4'11" and under 100 pounds when not pregnant. He also weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces and was healthy. U/S are not exact, and your doctor will monitor you closely as you get closer to the end of April. Congratulations on your growing family!

I gave birth to a baby 2 lbs. smaller than what they told me in the office just 3 days before. They are not very acurate most of the time about those kind of things. Do not let them change your due date..they did that with my son, because they said he measured 2 weeks bigger, and so he was deivered earlier than he should have. It was obvious that he was not quite ready! Good luck..bigger babies do tend to sleep better:) ~A.~

Well first off, it's not a problem. ;) Some babies, and people, are just bigger than others. The measurements they use are an average so measuring a few weeks smaller or larger is not a big deal. It still falls into the realm of normal. If you were measuring 6 weeks bigger or smaller, now that would be a different story.

My son always measured a few weeks ahead even though we new EXACTLY what day I ovulated, etc. The Drs never worried and, as it turns out, he's just bigger -- 95th percentile -- so it only figures he was large in the womb. I'm fairly tall and my family are all tall. It's genetic. I started to go into pre-labor the day I was induced (38 weeks). He never dropped though and I ended up with a c-s. Frankly, I wouldnt' worry too much if I were you. If you go into labor early, you'll just end up with a c-s earlier. Your Dr willl have a better idea when you get closer. Enjoy the pregnancy while you can. Good luck!

I am 37 weeks and measuring 2.5 weeks ahead ...I agree ultrasound measurement doesn't mean much. I to am a planned repeat section. My first son was 10.9 and I feel like this baby is big as well. If you go into labor and you are a planned c-section your doc will just do your c-section early...no big deal.

I have measured big with all my babies(5). I am due to have a c-section on Tuesday(finally!) because of previous c-sections. My last ultrasound was 2 weeks ago and she was already measuring 7lbs4oz- I'm sure she will be at least 9lbs. I have been trying to go into labor, because then they will just do the c-section earlier! No luck for me though! :(
If you do go into labor before 36 weeks- they will mostlikely stop it, send you home and put you on bed rest- after 36 weeks it's safer for the baby and they will most likely go ahead with a c-section. If you are progressing fast, they might give you something to slow it down- I don't think they would do an emergency c-section unless they had no other choice.
Good luck! Also, talk to your doctor about your concerns- he/she should be able to tell you what you can expect with going into labor before the c-section.

Ultrasounds are notorious for giving very large errors, sometimes of by 5 pounds !!! Whats the use then! Don't let them change your due date. Unless you're considered very high risk, allow nature do its magic. As I read in a book, "your body is not a lemon".

I measured 2 weeks big with my first 2 and they were 7 lb. 15 oz. and 8 lb. 9 oz, both a week before due date. My 3rd measured 6 weeks big at times but we had a 7 week ultrasound and were sure of the due date. He was born on his due date at 10 lb. 11 oz., vaginally with no epidural unfortunately. I wouldn't worry about measuring 2 weeks big, it's pretty common, at least in my circle of friends.

My first measured off the charts by sono towards the end of my pregnancy. It actually gave question marks instead of an estimated gestational age. I was completely freaked out since my husband and I were both really big babies. She was born on time and only weighed 8 lbs. 6 oz. I would't be concerned unless you OB is. Congrats!

I measured two weeks ahead starting at about 20 weeks. I did go into labor two weeks early, but my guy only weighed 6lbs. 9oz. I'm sure you'll be fine and the docs will take care of you!! Good luck=)

My son measured big for quite a while and then was in the normal range for the last month. He was 7lbs 13oz - and I was induced at 40 weeks. I was freaking out thinking I was going to have a huge baby - but he wasn't! Don't stress over it - by the time she's due she might not be so big!

I also measured 2 weeks early with my little girl. They told me shortly before she was born that she was going to be HUGE! She came late and they had to induce. When she was born, she only weighed 7 lbs 6 oz. I wouldn't count on your measurements too much. I hope this helps and good luck!

Hi Melissa,

I don't think measuring big puts you in the category of going into labor sooner. I measured big with 2 out of 3 of my pregnancies and carried all of them full term. My second baby was at 6 lbs by 26 weeks of pregnancy and at 39 weeks was at 10lbs 2 oz. They scheduled me for a C (my first one ever) the next morning and sure enough he came out weighing 10lbs 3oz! I could barely get out of bed the week before he was due and had a few "Are you carrying twins" comments during my last trimester. : )

It was really exciting to me having such a big boy. I didn't have gest diabetes, I'm small framed and my husbands not a large man either so we had no idea we'd ever have such a big boy. Even my OB said he was the biggest baby ever delivered by her at my hospital. : )
My 3rd boy measured big but not as big as my second, my third weighed 8lbs 15oz the day he was born and that was at 40 weeks. I could tell he wasn't going to be a 10 pounder since I could get out of my bed easier! LOL
So again, don't worry yourself that your baby will come sooner because of being bigger. Babies have growth spurts inside of you and your baby might all of a sudden slow down with growth and then pick back up at the end of your pregnancy (pretty much what mine did) so don't worry, relax and I'm sure your OB will take good care of you and know what to watch for. : )

Good luck and take care!

I'd try not to worry too much about it. My son was always on the big side for his gestation age by at least 2 weeks. I expected him to be early because of his size and because my brother and I both were early, but my son took his time. He was born on the day after his EDD with labor stating on the due date.

Just let you Dr. know you're concerned about it. Hopefully they'll be able to offer reassurance. You might even ask how it would be handled if you do go into labor before the c-section.

Also, I don't know what your situation is, but I do know of mom's who went into labor before their scheduled c-section date and everything went perfectly fine for them.

I just had my third in Dec. I was measuring up to 4 wks further during the pregnancy, so I was terrified that he was going to be huge. (My second was 9lb4oz, 2 wks early and never measured that large.) I was induced a week 1/2 early and he was "only" 8lb7oz, so I was pleasantly surprised! I wouldn't worry TOO much about it :)

It's the babys size vs how roomy your pelvis is. My son was 9 lbs 1 1/2 oz and I had a vaginal delivery. He was born exactly on his due date and I was not induced.

I had a repeat C-section and my baby came 3 weeks early....as soon as I knew I was in labor I called the doctor. They sent me to the hospital, checked and monitored me for an hour, and pushed my surgery before the next one....all was great.
