I just passed my glucose tolerance test yesterday AM. However, since I was high risk for GD, I researched a GD diet and have been trying to follow it for the past few weeks. I am at high risk due to age, family hx, and at my last OB apt. the baby had a large growth spurt. Although my blood work measured within the normal ranges, I would like to continue following this style of eating plan. I find it difficult, however, b/c I avoid artificial sweeteners, soy products, etc. Can anyone give me ideas for low carb snacks and meals? thank you for your help Moms

What can I do next?

Hi there, i'm 29 and have 4 girls, with DD3 I had gestational diabetes and was able to control it with diet, both she and I came out fine, and although she was my biggest baby @ 8lbs3oz(not big at all for a GD baby) she did excellent. I will be honest with you, i started my pregnancy with 164 lbs, went up to 210lbs and im only 5'1, I am a BIG junk food eater and so I thought I wouldn't be able to follow the meal plan given to me. Ill try to make it short and include the most helpful tips that helped me get through it: You can eat ANYTHING but in moderation, If you want a slice of cake you can have it, just skip the mashed potatoes, rice, pasta or whatever carb serving your having with your meal and save those carbs for your slice of cake! .make sure you don't go more than 2-3 hrs without eating, if you're gonna skip anything don't skip your protein (tuna, eggs, meat, cheese) and if you're filling hungry have a salad , salads are one of your "free" items that you can use as fillers when you feel hungry, this is what i snacked on during my diabetic time....
snacks-3X a day (between BF and lunch, between lunch and dinner and once before bed)
hand full of grapes(carb) and a cheese serving (protein) or
1 med apple in slices (carb) dipped in peanut butter (protein) or
5 saltine crackers(carb) and a serving of tuna (protein)
serving of cottage cheese(protein) and sliced strawberries(carb)
1 hardshell taco , shell is carb meat is protein

I think it's great that you would like to continue eating like a diabetic although you're not. Ill tell you something, when I was eating like this I actually felt like I was eating MORE than before, because you HAVE te eat every 2-3 hrs, and I never do that, i'll be lucky if i eat 2x a day now with how busy i always am. And whenever i want to loose a few lbs, i eat like a have gd again and I have lost up to 6lbs in one week. I know my answer is all over the place but i tried to cram in a bunch of stuff lol good luck!!

I had GD with both of my girls, and the first thing I learned is that I could eat ANYTHING I wanted, as long as I paid attention to the portions (and yes, that includes pizza, ice cream and Thin Mint GS cookies).
For me, the eating small meals was the key, and what to eat at what time of day.
In the morning I had a protein (no milk) for breakfast (usually peanut butter on one slice of bread),
fruit and a starch (crackers, etc) for my morning snack,
I had veggies, milk, protein and starch for lunch [if I wanted to splurge, 2 Taco Bell taco supremes and a milk, or a sourdough jack, side salad and a milk],
veggies and a starch for my afternoon snack,
lots of protein and veggies for dinner with a little starch
glass of milk or a little ice cream for my late night snack, just before going to bed.

It's all about portions and what it's worth... for me, three girl scout cookies and some fruite for my afternoon snack was a nice treat once in a while, and didn't break the rules. If you really want pizza... thin crust and only eat one slice (though depending on the restaurant you can get away with two).
You're not denying yourself, you're limiting your portions.
Good Luck (and pm me if you want more details or ideas on what worked for me).

ETA: Love Leila's answer. Just wanted to second the salad thing; I was also told I could eat as much cheese as I wanted. The important thing is to make sure that what you're eating isn't too high in carbs.

I had GD with my youngest daughter and luckily managed it with diet and exercise. I usually ate the same snacks each day since I really enjoyed them - my in between breakfast and lunch snack was 1-1/2 graham crackers with either 1 or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (sorry can't remember at the moment), my between lunch and dinner snack was 1-1/2 cups cut-up strawberries with a string cheese, and my before bedtime snack was 1 cup of milk with a Quaker granola bar.

Good for you for wanting to watch your diet even though you passed your test!
