My husband and I are having severe sleep issues. Him mostly. I feel so bad for him every day. He wakes up complaining of back problems. Our mattress is about 6 years old and its already given out. I'm actually tired of the whole bed. We have a queen and I'm wondering if its really worth the money to get a king. See if I get a king I'm selling my whole bed. I have a natural wood headboard and footboard it was bought about 11 years ago but its in perfect shape. But that's only if we decide on a king. But im just trying to digure out is it worth buying a king or should I save the money for a really good queen. And what kind of mattress is really worth the money. Thanks moms. I would really appreciate your ideas and advice.

I think the size is irrelevant--it's the quality of the mattress.
I'm beginning to sound like a commercial but Original Mattress Factory makes really good, quality mattresses. And they make it simple to buy with their good/better/best product line. Pick the size, pick the price that you can afford & enjoy!

We bought a Sleep Number Bed and hate it! In my personal opinion its a glorified air mattress. No matter what number I put it at its not comfortable. Same for my hubby. Its a shame too cause they are expensive! I soo wish we had bought that hotel mattress cause it was way more comfortable. Buyers regret here..

Long story short, spend a lot of time looking for a good mattress and try out many. You'll be happy you did later.

I was in your position a while back. I had difficulity sleeping and every morning my back hurt. Needless to say it was difficult to make it through the day.

While I saved for a new matress, I visited matress stores trying them out by actually laying on them until I found several I found comfortable in a variety of styles.

Take a paper and pencil during your visits and make notes. Write done model numbers and prices and you and your husbands comments.

One weekend I found an mattress that had been 899 a few weeks ago for 689. It sleeps awesome and I get a wonderful night sleep everynight!

As far as a mattress being worth the money, check the warrentys and get everything in writing. Good luck to you!

I'll tell you what, my husband & I were given a king mattress set by a friend who moved out-of-state & we will never go back. There's just something luxurious about having all the room you could ever want every single night. If you can afford it, I say go for it!

If the two of you generally sleep well on a queen, then there is no need to upgrade. If you are like me, and are on the plus side, or your hubby is a bed hog, then I would consider upgrading.

I would look into the sleep # bed. There are two sides that can be set seperately, I don't personally care for them, but have a family memeber that just loves theirs.

If space isn't your problem and it is just your husband's back, then maybe just buy a queen memory foam mattress. You can use it with your existing box spring and bed frame. You can buy them at Costco or online through their website. If you don't like it, you can return it at any time for any reason and then buy yourself a king set.

I love my daughter's memory foam mattress. The next time my husband and I buy a mattress, I will probably buy one of those. That way, I won't wake up every time my husband tosses and turns.

Good luck!

I have a queen mattress that works just fine, but both my honey and I are thin folks who like to be right next to one another. It's a Temperpedic style visco-elastic memory foam mattress...and we just love it. Sleeping anywhere else is just not the same.

Check out these ones on Amazon...soooo wonderful. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3...

We have a mattress that I like that is not all foam but has foam in it so it is very comfortable and you can find lots of those out there. At least lay on some. I think ours is Spring Air. I was told by salespersons, maybe to sell to me, that people think a firm mattress is the best and sometimes it's too hard and so you need to try all and see if you need soft, medium or harder. I thought with back issues I needed firm but that's not the case.

We love our savvy rest mattress. We have a king. But its basically its like two twins together bc each side is made up of three layers of all natural organic latex. My side is much softer than husbands side. Expensive, but worth it. See if u can find a brick and mortar store so I can try it out. We even bought our daughter a twin bc traditional mattresses and especially memory foam offgas toxic chemicals.

Queen vs King....

Is there really a need for a larger bed? How much room do you have in your bedroom?

We had a king-size waterbed for a long time, and it was huge! We now have a queen regular mattress, and it is better sized for our bedroom. We don't "run into" each other on the queen bed.... it is fine for our needs.

As far as what kind, that really depends on you. One of your problems is that you each may have different preferences on mattress softness/hardness.

Personally, I don't like the tempurpedic type..... they make me feel hot. Others may rave about them.

For a temporary fix, check your box spring/foundation. Sometimes the boards break, and that causes sagging in the top mattress. For a temporary fix, you can put a piece of plywood between the two mattresses.

We have a double pillowtop... I can reverse the mattress and it has the pillowtop on the other side, also. We get firmness and softness with that.

For your next mattress purchase, be sure to turn the mattress as recommended... that will extend the life, and even out the wear.

We've had a tempurpedic for 4 years now and have never had pain since we got it. Can't recommend it enough.
We have a king bed and, to me, that extra space really makes a difference.

I am telling you it is the mattress, not the size!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get a memory foam mattress. DH and I sleep like rocks with no back pain. Memory foam NEVER sags and you never need to flip it. We even got the extra foam pillow top on our bed -- our kids and the guest room also have memory foam mattresses. No need to go with Tempur Pedic. Just look on line for other brands. Believe me, they are all made the same way with the same stuff.

If you are normal sized people then a queen should be fine if that is what you are accustomed to. The ONLY time I have ever wished we had a king, was when I was in the last few months of my pregnancies. That's it. The rest of the time it just requires more room space, more hassle to make the bed and longer drying times to get the bed linens washed/dried, and the hassle of folding even bigger sheets! :/

But, if you are waking (or your husband is) with an achey back, or just plain are waking early for no "evident" reason--then it is the mattress. That is what happened to us and how I knew. I've NEVER had back problems, but one day I noticed that for the past month or two, I was waking in the mornings without my alarm clock (I am NOT a morning person) and was exhausted and not rested. Staying in bed and trying to go back to sleep didn't help. It was because the mattress was shot. As soon as we replaced it, I slept normally again.

I am not a fan of the foam mattresses, but they are getting better. The earlier ones "gripped" you and made you feel warm at night (so I have been told), and when I tried lying on them in the stores, I did NOT like them. Just went and bought a new mattress set for our daughter (she's 10) and we tried out the newer styles in the foam (for ourselves, just out of curiosity) and the newest ones (and most expensive :( ) don't have the "grippy" feeling to me, and are supposedly not holding the heat at night.
Lie down on lots of mattresses and see what you like. Take notes and record prices, too. It is getting harder and harder to find non-foam (the spring type) mattresses. So take your time and don't go crazy on $$. If you spend less than $500 expect to get a crappy mattress. Beyond that, ANYthing you buy will likely need replacing in under 10 years...

I don't know how much room you have in your bedroom. And those that say size doesn't matter - it does if you have a smaller room...

A queen-size bed is 60 wide inches by 80 inches long.
A king-size bed is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long.
A California King measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long.

So you are talking a difference of 60 inches to 76 inches - that's over 1 foot difference - do you have the space in your room?

Lay on as many mattresses as you can!! Don't go with the first one!!! Do some research on what you are looking for as well...pillow top, foam, etc.

Price out sheets too...king sheets can be expensive and you would need at least 2 sets - at least in my house I would want two sets for each bed. A comforter/bedding set for a king is expensive as well....so price that out too and find out what is in your budget.

I love the king and we have Temperpedic and it is wonderful! The good thing about it is if my husband is tossing and turning, I never feel it! I highly recommend a termperpedic.

On top of getting a new bed, stay away from computers, Kindles, Kindle Fire especially, TV, and cell phones two hours before bedtime. The light emitting off these electronics is making your brains think it is still daytime and sending lots of adreneline to your brains. Cover all little lights in your room like phones, cable box, clocks etc. Today's society is taking a big hit w/o normal phases of sleep because of electronics.

I had months of aching backs and finally went mattress shopping. I couldnt wait to wakeup and get out of it in the morning. I looked into the mattress toppers. SOme are so thin, they dont even do anything good for you. So i was looking at $200-300 for a topper.
I Went to Mattress Firm to see if htey had toppers, i want to see it and feel it before spending that kind fo money. You have to air them out too, so 2 days after you buy one, you can use it. I was impatient i guess.
So Mattress Firm they dont carry toppers so I looked into regular queen size. Ones with coils do not help with back aches, they push against you and that doesnt help. So they had a queen foam, for $499! It was very firm but I thought i would try it ( iwas in the store for hours). $79 to trade out if you dont like it. I slept like heaven that night and every night since. It was the best $500 I ever spent on myself. Becuase my parents bought a very expensive bed there too, they threw in a pillow at my request. I also got a box spring since mine was in horrible condition. Total bill was close to $800, got a mattress protector too. (i wanted to safegurd against spills and periods even).
My advice, if you have room for a king get one, i know you will love it. If you dont have a frame for one, wait on it.. you dont NEED a headboard and footboard in order to sleep in it. Get the best quality you can. For a plush top it was more than double what I paid.
That was my experience.

My husband and I finally upgraded to a king from 15 years on a queen, and it is the best!! We love being able to stretch out. But it is a big expense between mattresses, headboard, sheets, even pillows etc. But for a few years before we switched, we added a 4" temperpedic/foam mattress pad and that made our pre-existing mattress so much more comfortable and bought us a couple extra years on an old mattress. My dad did this too recently. And you can find them for around or under $100 on overstock.com or bjs/cosco, may be worth a try!
