Hi, I'm new at this, but I thought I'd give it a whirl. I have problems with makeup, more specifically foundation. I have tried tons of the stuff you can get at most stores and it makes me break out horribly, even the stuff recommended for sensitive skin, but have not had any success. I've even tried some of the more expensive stuff from department stores and Mary Kay, it worked o.k. but the woman helping me could not find a color that actually matched well, which intern made my face look off and would still cause me to break out. I unfortunately have very sensitive skin, which poses many problems with makeup.
I don't really know where to go for advice, because the people at the mall are all there to make a commission and are trying to sell their product. I am trying really hard not to get lost in being just a Mom, and occasionally doing my hair and makeup before leaving the house helps, but is not worth it if I have to spend a week and a half trying to clear my face of the latest breakout.
Is there anything that has worked well for anyone? Has anyone tried the mineral makeup? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have the same problem!! Not only do I have acne, but I also have freckles which makes it even harder to find a foundation!! I use Revlon Color stay with soft flex for oily/combo skin and I haven't had an outbreak since!! I also use Neutrogena 60 second mask/scrub before my shower and it seems to work pretty well.

After I had my daughter, my skin breaks out with every little thing. I have found, through the advice of others, to use Perscriptives (can be found at the mall). They are hypo allergenic and they can create a custom color for you too. They can also create it so that it is light coverage (this will help with breakouts.) The other brand I use, and havent had a problem with is MAC. They have a compact that is foundation so it is not to thick, and they are also hypoallergenic...
Good luck

Have you tried any mineral makeup? They are easy to use and easy to take off. I use bare essentials, or erban essentials and haven't had a break out or any reaction to that makeup. Try it out. Hopefully that might help. best of luck,

Hi!
I have to jump on the Bare minerals/ bare escentuals bandwagon. I have excema and also get hives from sesonal allergies. I have used bare escentuals for years! They have foundation, concelers, and every other kind of makeup too. There brushes are key. It is cheapest to buy as a set and on www.qvc.com you can get a great set w/ brushes for around $45. Also look into there rare minerals treatment that you wear overnight - it has all these cliniclly proven statistics to back up it's results too. They also seel it at www.sephora.com , but check qvc first for prices....

My skin breaks out easily too. For cleansing I use Cetaphil wash, and Cetaphil, for face, lotion. Don't use the regular Cetaphil lotion on your face. It feels greasy. It has no smells or anything. Also you want a product that is non-comedogenic, which Cetaphil is. Non-comedogenic means non pore clogging. I also really love the proactive solution repair lotion only the lotion. If I put it on at night, it helps repair pimples overnight, adn makes my skin feel great.
I have tried the mineral makeup and didn't like it what so ever. It didn't cover well at all. Foundation also comes in non-comedogenic formulas. You can look up under google and find one. I'm pretty sure Mary Kay makes a non comdeogenic foundation and they have tons of shades to choose from. Whatever you buy make sure it says NON-COMEDOGENIC. Good luck wiht that.

Hi M.! First of all, I'm a SAHM and am not selling anything. I am 39 and had been having breakouts daily; worse than when I was a teenager. I'd been watching the mineral makeup commercials on tv for weeks and decided to try either bare minerals or sheer cover (with Melissa Gilbert on the ad). I went with Sheer cover (about $30 a month) because it was cheaper. Let me tell you, mineral makeup is a miracle! I used it for a week and almost all my blemishes dissapeared and new ones are a rare occurance now instead of daily! My skin feels and looks better even when I don't wear the makeup. I actually just switched to Physicians Formula (about $10 for a container that will probably last me 3 months) because it's even less expensive and I can buy it at Wal-Mart or the drug store rather than waiting for my order through the mail. It feels a little different than the Sheer Cover, but the ingredients are very similar and overall I'm just as happy with the coverage and benefits to my skin. I would highly reccommend trying one of these to help with your skin.
Just a side note: I don't care for the brush that comes with Physicians Formula mineral powder so I use my own "Kabuki" brush.

I've had all those same problems...I have sensitive skin, easily break out, and have a REALLY hard time finding a foundation that works with my skin and matches.
I have tried the mineral makeup (sheer cover) and do like it. I was VERY skeptical and thought it would NOT cover my acne scares but I was surprised! It matched my skin color better than any other foundation I've tried and it covered better than I thought it would. The concealer is GREAT!! I hope to be able to buy the concealer for the rest of my life!! There are a few things I don't like about it though. It did tend to settle in any wrinkle on my face (which being only 25 I don't have any really, but seriously, ANY LITTLE crevice in your skin, it will make look like a wrinkle). I had to make sure not to put too much around my nose and mouth for that reason. Also, my skin looked oily most of the time, even right after I put it on and I don't think my skin would be considered oily. I just think the "glow" they talk about having on the infomercial is TOO MUCH of a glow for me!! I would usually put on another powder on top of the mineral makeup to get rid of that problem. Also if I wore it while working out, when I would sweat it made my skin sting, so I had to make sure to remove it before a workout.
The foundation I use the most is L'Oreal true match. I haven't found a color that EXACLTY matches my skin (since I'm so pale), but it's the closest I've found (except for the mineral powder). I've had LOTS of compliments while wearing the true match foundation and powder.
On days when I don't want the hastle or don't have the time of putting on liquid foundation, I just use the sheer cover concealer on the red parts of my face with the true match powder over my entire face and it works really well. Covers great and never feels heavy.
Both of the foundations (mineral and true match) have never caused me to break out. Only if I don't wash the true match off at the end of the day will I have a bit of a break out on my chin and forehead. But with the mineral powder I can wear it for days and not have a break out. (It just doesn't LOOK great after a day or two so I wouldn't recomend that!) :P
A friend lended me a really good book about skin care. It's called "The Beauty Bible" by Paula Begoun. I was able to develop my own skin care routine with products (from the grocery store) that worked best for my skin by reading that book. She doesn't push ANY product, just gives reviews on what she thinks of them. She mainly focuses on defining the ingredients used in beauty products to help you discover which ones in the products you currently use might be aggrivating your skin. She has a website as well. It's http://www.cosmeticscop.com/ .
Hope I was a bit of help for you! I know what it's like to be frustrated with all the beauty products out there!! I too like to take care of myself even though I'm a mommy of 2 girls (ages 5 and 2.5). I vowed as a teenager to never become one of those "frumpy moms" who didn't seem to take care of themselves. I even put on makeup right after giving birth to both of my girls! It made me feel much better even though it wasn't much!!
Good luck in your search!

Hi M.,
I love Bare Minerals or Bare Escentuals same thing. I discovered it about three years ago. It is an amazing product. I have very light skin with freckles (yuck) very hard skin color to match foundation. I have had a lot of problems with my skin after I had my gallbladder removed. Without it my body rids the oils in my body any way it can. Unfortunately for me it's through my skin. Which causes breakouts. Try it I can guarantee you won't want to put liquid foundation on ever again. It's not cheap, but totaly worth it. My sister tried it one year she was out visiting me and she hasn’t used anything else in over two years. I hope this helps and good luck!

I also had problems with my skin breaking out from makeup and found it was even worse with any make-up containing sunscreen. I found a mineral makeup from Jane Iredale that did not cause break outs and also gave a natural form of sun protection. It is a little more expensive then store brands but it lasts a long time. You can order it online or I purchased it at the Kaiser cosmetic center in rancho cordova (open for non-members too) the esth Nicki can do a color match for you too.

i don't know your budget for makeup, but if you can swing for mary kay, you can probably afford bare minerals. its the best foundation i've ever tried. I too break out easily. the makeup is actually a mineral powder, but it covers just as well as liquid foundation, actually better then some brands. it's easist to order online because very few stores carry it. you can go to bareescentuals.com, they have various starter kits to choose from, and you are almost guaranteed to find a color match.

yes I have a suggestion and hopefully a solution... I too have had your problem for YEARS! I have tried very expensive foundations and make up to find that my skin was constantly breaking out. I even went to school to become an aesthetician, and I was very discouraged to find that the products that would clear up my skin were too expensive and hard to get (especially with 2 babies) So I ran across a skincare company called Arbonne. From my training with skin I instantly knew this stuff would work because of the ingredients (MOST skin care and make up have toxic chemicals! Which causes break outs!) After using Arbonne skin care and make up my skin has cleared up and stayed clear for 4 months now! I use both their mineral powder and their liquid foundation, but not together it depends on how my skin is that day. If I feel I need extra coverage I use the liquid. For you I would use the mineral powder, it is light and blends into your skin, it lasts all day and has spf 15, and then I would use a little concealer under your eyes and other small blemishes or discoloration. If would also invest in a good skincare line because really the best foudnation is your own natural glowing flawless skin! go to www.arbonne.com to order, and you need an id number through a consultant. I became a consultant just so I could share my good news with people like you! my Consultnat ID is 17022021...contact me if you have any questions!

HI M....
IT SEEMS LIKE YOU GOT A LOT OF GOOD ADVICE. I SELL MARY KAY TOO BUT CHOOSE NOT TO USE THE FOUNDATION BECAUSE OF MY ACNE PROBLEM AND SENSITVIE SKIN ISSUES. I USE THE BARE ESSENTIALS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT STORES YOU HAVE WHERE YOU LIVE BUT I'M SURE THERE ARE SOME STORES THAT ARE SIMILAR TO OURS. SEPHORA WILL GET A COLOR TO MATCH YOU. AND SINCE YOU CAN TEST IT THERE, YOU CAN SEE IF THERE IS A REACTION FIRST BEFORE YOU COMMIT AND BUY IT. IT IS A LITTLE PRICEY, GOING AT $65 FOR THE KIT (YOU WANT TO BUY THE KIT- IT HAS THE APPLICATOR BRUSH-SEPERATELY IT WILL COST MORE THAN THE KIT) BUT IT DOES LAST A LONG TIME. IN THE KIT THERE ARE 2 TUBS OF 2 COLORS OF "FOUNDATION" THAT YOU CAN MIX TO GET THE RIGHT COLORING, 2 BRUSHES AND A CONCEALOR BRUSH, MINERAL VEIL AND A CD TO HELP INSTRUCT YOU ON HOW TO BETTER APPLY YOUR MAKE UP.
BUT IF YOU TRY OTHER PLACES LIKE THE MAKE UP COUNTERS AT LIKE MACY'S THEN HAVE THEM APPLY THE MAKE UP THAT WAY YOU CAN SEE HOW IT FEELS AND THEN TELL THEM THAT YOU NEED TO SEE IF THERE IS A REACTION. SO LEAVE IT ON FOR THE DAY. ITS TESTING THE PRODUCT OUT. OTHERWISE YOU ARE GOING TO BUY SOMETHING THAT YOU REALLY AREN'T USING AND THAT IS A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME SPENT.
I HOPE THIS ALL HELPS. LOTS OF LUCK TO YOU ON YOUR MAKE UP SHOPPING.

Have you tried Sephora. It is a store in most malls. The people who work there are for the most part pretty knowledgable. They have many products that are for sensitive skin. If you find a store near you just go in and find someone who works there and tell them what you are looking for and you should be able to find something. I use MAC foundation which is a powder foundation and it works very well but my skin is pretty much normal and I am not sure if it is good for sensitive skin but you might look into this also. Good Luck.

My name is S., and i soo know what you are talkin about!! I have the same exact problem as well!!
I am a MK consultant, and before i was one, I had such a hard time finding makeup that wouldnt break me out, I then started using tinited moisturizer on my face cuz that seemed to of helpped for a bit, but then i started to break out again really bad!!
When a friend introduced me to Mk products, i made sure i used the skin care system, wich included the 3 in 1 cleanser, day sloution and moisturizer then foundation, i seen a radical difference in my skin, and now i dont break out at all, except rite before i start my period, which is verry minor!
I was curious if you were using just the foundation or if you were using the skin care system with Mk, and to let you know that there is a foundation for every skin type, that loks natural. Also you might be interested in the Tinted moisturizer, that helps alot as well, especilly if you are goin to the gym, or just to the supermarket, and you want to look put together!!
I would be more then happy to find you your pefect shade, and give you a free facial if you were intrested

Their Stay True formula is light coverage and dosen't cause breakouts. it dosen't take alot aplied with a makeup sponge so the bottle last a long time, especially if you don't wear it every day I have to makesure to wash my face twice everyday and stay away from Chocolate, oily foods and too much soda. A weekly at home facial including a clay mask dosen't hurt either. Avon's pore-fection clay mask is great and inexpensive. Hope this helps. good luck.

I am an aesthetician student and freelance makeup artist. I hope your problem cleared up! If not I would recommend 2 things Arbonne's Clear Advantage system, which incorporates supplements to clear toxins from the inside out as well as the topical regimen (3 step system). Then I would recommend Arbonne mineral makeup which is alot cheaper than Bare Minerals, etc. These products are botanical-based super safe and I would use anything else on myself or my clients. Dont get caught up into name brand products with NO RESULTS. If you would like samples I would be more than happy to send you some, right now while still a student I do offer FREE facials to practice my technique and to discuss the importance of a skincare regimen.

Hi M.. I am 43 yr old wife and mother. I have tried so many beauty products over the years and I am finally to a point where I will not buy anything unless it works. I can suggest two things.
One: Sephora. You can go into the store, try the products and ask advice. If you purchase something that dosen't work for you, you can return it for a refund or exchange. I think this is the best since products work differently on so many people. I know there is a Sephora in Victoria Gardens.
Two: Arbonne. I went to a party before Christmas, purchased some products and love them. They have the same policy as Sephora. If something dosen't work for you, you cfan return it for a refund or exchange. If you don't know anyone who sells it, I have a girlfriend who has parties a couple of times a month.
It is also important to wash your makeup off every night before going to bed. You want your pores to breath after having makeup on all day. Good Luck M..

I agree with many of the moms who like Bare Escentuals. I love this product because it evens out my skin tone and covers my acne, (yet it's not a heavy foundation that makes me break out even more).
You can go to Nordstrom, they have a makeup counter with the products. Try them out and see what you think. One important thing that I would add is to WASH YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES...espically foundation and blush brush. I use Mac's brush cleaner...just add a small amount to water, swirl your brush in it and dab on a paper towel. Repeat the process until all the makeup is off your brush.

Just another side of the issue. I used to have bad problems with my skin. It was hard to get a good match with my foundation and I was constantly battling breakouts from one product or another. I finally decided to take a break from foundation altogether and within a week, my skin cleared up. Within a month, my skin tone evened out and soon, my skin was as close to perfect as I could get. This was over 10 years ago (I am 36 now) and my skin care regimen is basically glycerin soap (or goat's milk soap) a soft buff buff and once in a while a light moisturizer but very seldomly.
There are a few occasions where I want a bit of coverage for dressing up and going out.....I have used Apricot (or rose) complexion enhancer lotion from CCB Paris/EllaB....not sure if you can get it online now but I know a few ebay seller who have it. Or Bonne Belle bronzer gel. Foundations are heavy, even the light all natural ones...they coat your skin and eventually, even the best will change your skin texture. I usually use a little bit of blusher and/or shimmer/bronzer powder to get a sun kissed glow but still look natural.
Just my take on the issue....hope this helps a little.

Hi! It's been a while since you posted this, but I couldn't help but respond. First, you need to contact the Mary Kay consultant that sold you the foundation because if it doesn't work than you get your money back. It doesn't matter if the tube is gone. If you don't know her info, contact the company through marykay.com. Second, she probably wasn't a seasoned consultant, and didn't know how to match shades appropriatly. There are 6 different types of foundation and cover ranging in shades and skin types. Last, use the consultant locator to find someone in your area who is willing to sit down one on one for a makeover and makes sure you are happy. Make sure she is a working consultant who has samples of all the different types of foundation (or at least most) so she can give you the best service.
As a MK consultant, I am very sorry that you were unhappy with the product. With the options available, your consultant should have left you feeling special and beautiful.
Hape this helps ;)

Why do you feel you need foundation?
freckles, pimples?
If you are just using it to smooth your skin tone, MAC actually makes a great powder foundation that doesn't absorb and sits better on your skin, I think.
Thats what I use and it's alot quicker too.
I don't sell MAC or anything, I just love it.
+ the MAC girls don't make commission.
good luck and Peace out sista!

I have tried the mineral make up and would NOT recomend it for you! I have breakout prone skin and thought it would be better for me...it was not. It did not cause the instant breakout but rather over the course of time severely blocked my pores...months later I am still trying to deal with the aftermath! I started mixing the cheapest - WetNWild tinted moisturizer with my own oil free lotion and using it as a light foundation. So far I haven't had any problems with it. I don't know if it will work for you but it may be worth a try. As an added bonus it only costs around $3 so if it is useless it isn't a huge waste of money.

I have used the Sheer cover and Bare essentials makeup and it is wonderful. I rarely have any breakouts. The makeup is packed in three seperate shades so it can be blended to match any skin tone. It take a little practice to learn how to blend it but I have used it now for a year and am in love with it. I buy the kit for my skin tone and because it is blended (by me) it will go from winter to summer and work well with the changes in skin tone as I tan in the summer. It is very light and covers wonderfully. It is a powder and is applied with a brush so you are not wearing a liquid that soaks into the skin. I recommend it to anyone with or without skin problems. They do have introductory trial sizes available and it's guaranteed so if you don't like it you can return it. It is expensive but I feel it is worth it. You can go to the websites for further information. Just Google the brand names. Good luck in your search!

I have sensitive skin also and use Bare Escentuals makeup. It's wonderful. I'm also very fair and it's been the first foundation that I've ever really been happy with.... I buy mine from QVC or www.colorfulsprinkles.com There's also an infomercial... but check it out. I buy tons of samples from Corina (free shipping if you're a member of the Delphi board) and they last for a really long time. The kits from QVC are also a really good value.
At Colorful Sprinkles, Corina sells samples and the full size.
Want to also mention that not all mineral makeup is the same.... I've found BE to be the best.
There's also a message board on Delphi called BE Addicts and it's full of advice. http://forums.delphiforums.com/bareescentuals/start
I totally understand the difficulties of sensitive skin. I have lupus and other health problems and take a ton of medication which interacts w/my skin... Bare Escentuals (Bare Minerals) is a God send. Leslie Blogett (the CEO) is amazing. You can also go to www.qvc.com and request a Bare Escentuals catalog to be sent to you.... I have a big 8x10 catalog that I copy for people and give them.... and occasionally find extra catalogs (the 8x10 catalog was a first). Definitely check it out tho!
If you'd like a copy, email me... or if you have any questions.

I'm thinking your break outs are a reaction to chemicals used in the manufacture of your make-up. You would be apalled I think at the sort of things companies are allowed to use in their products. Personally, I never touch the stuff, I hate the hassle, and as long as my lips aren't chapped I don't feel like I need anything.
Recently I have discovered another reason to stay away from makeup: Thimerosal, a preservative that includes mercury. If the ingredient list includes Thimerosal, don't touch it.
P.S. I recommend the little things that make you feel good. I always feel guilty making time for myself, (sometimes my husband has to FORCE me!) but not only do you deserve it, you need to fill your bucket so that there's something there to give.

I know it's been awhile since your post, but I just wanted to say try bare minerals. If you have a sephora near you, walk in and tell them what you're looking for, and they will help you.
Try washing your face with cetaphil cleanser. You put it on dry, like lotion, over your makeup, rub gently, and let it sit and dissolve the makeup. It is just about the gentlest stuff there is, and fairly cheap and easy to find.
Let me know how this works for you!
P.S. Pay a little more for your mineral makeup! Minerals can be good or bad for your skin. Physician's formula is okay, but I would REALLY recommend bare minerals (bare escentuals) instead. Their ingredients are higher quality, and you deserve good stuff on your already sensitive face!

It's a little expensive but totally worth it. It's all that I wear now. And the shades are completely blendable to any skin color. You can buy it at sephora stores, or online at www.bareminerals.com
They are amazing, and feel so good when you put it on. And it's all natural so it shouldn't cause you to break out. Check it out!

Hi M.,
My name is S. I'm an Makeup Artist/Esthetician and most important a mom so, I understand how that new roll can leave you feeling less than adequate in the taking care of yourself department. I'm a makeup artist do weddings teach classes etc. even umder that kind of pressure of having to maintain a certian level of maintaining myself it's hard. Many Makeup counter people are not makeup artist's and only know about there product's and don't know how to evaluate there clients. If you wan't to give me your email address I will send you my makeup literature that I hand out to all of my students explaining the basic fundamental's of applying makeup and how to find your foundation etc... I hope it helps.
The reason you could be breaking out is not the foundation most foundations are non comenogenic they have to be it could be an allergy your having to the makeup or just sensitive skin try some hypo allergenic makeup. when doing makeup avents for businesses I have had the experience using mineral makeup it's a great product and maybe a good idea for you to try. In general if I have a client whos over the age of 30 I try to stay away from powders because they have a tendency to sit in the lines rather than blend with them however, if your younger and have a more oily skin this may never be an issue for you. If your on the dry side and have a more mature skin then powders probably arent a good idea.
P.S. one of the biggest misconceptions when you break out is to dry out the area when you do that by not adding any moisture to the area your making the problem worse because your sebaceous glands are going to over produce to compensate. Your ph balance of your skin should be between 4.5 and 5.5 if you keep it within range while your fighting issues your skin will begin to normalize on it's own.
Good Luck!

I have found the only kind I can use is Bobbi Brown at Nordstrom. Ask for a sample large enough to be sure you don't have an alergic reaction. They should be accomdating.
I also use Witch Hazel with a cottonball for trouble skin. It's sort of my little secret when people ask about my clear complexion. Just use it as you would an astringent and be sure to moisturize. If your skin is trying to produce moisture from all the drying out from alcohol based cleaners and products, you could be causing it to produce more oils than your body can handle hence clogged pores and break outs.
Good luck

Hi M....I used to have sensitive, problem skin. I started using the mineral makeup from Avon and love it! They also have mineral makeup by Bare Minerals that I have friends that have tried. For me, it was the sensitivity but also I didn't like the heaviness that other makeups had. I would really give the mineral makeup a try, whether it is from Avon or whatever...It really is light feeling, and the colors tend to match multiple skin tones and look good regardless of the "exact" shade...it covers well too...I don't know how they do it...but my skin has a glow now and my skin hasn't been bothered a bit...I think because the minerals aren't supposed to aggrevate your skin...anyway, I'm rambling, but I'd give the mineral makeup a try ;) Good luck!

Hi M.,
I know the feeling, I have sensitive skin too. I just got the Bare Minerals starter kit, and I love it! I really do, and I'm not usually a make-up enthusiast.
I actually bought the kit when I was out of town, so I'm not exactly sure where to buy it, but probably a lot of department stores have it.
It actually makes my skin feel better, and it's also great because it is really subtle and looks natural whereas a lot of the foundation that you can buy in pharmacies and stuff looks very cakey and heavy.
I think you will like it, check it out if you have the chance. It's kind of expensive, $60 for the starter kit that I got (came with a DVD to help you learn how to apply it, which is really easy), but it's totally worth it, and you will feel very natural and beautiful.
Hope this helps!
P.S. I'm talking about the Bare Escentuals make-up too, like Megan said!

Hello, well, makeup for sensitive skin should be oil free and non-comedogenic. However, even non-comedogenic products may promote acne if you wear it say like when you exercise.
a good brand that you can try is trublend by covergirl.
But, if you have sensitive skin a really good thing to have is a really good acne fighting cream, gel, or whatever.
Jafra- like mary kay has some really good products that you can look into. You can check them out on the web at www.jafra.com. You can also talk to your doctor about some good acne cream.

My husband bought me the bare minerals line and I have mixed feeling for it. I have combination skin...some areas it makes my face feel like I am not wearing anything at all, then in my t- zone it sometimes glides off. For the most part I can fall asleep in it and it does not make me break out. I do get a few break outs here and there. When I am done with this order, I am going to give the store brands like Loreal or Nutrogena a shot. A lot cheaper. I hope you find something that will work for your skin.
