Hi Mamas,

I am going to be the maid of honor at my little sister's wedding. I have to give a speech and have really not much of an idea where to start or what to say? I want it to be sweet but funny -- but funny ha ha not funny at her expense. Have you heard any good speeches or do you have any tips?

What can I do next?

I have given a few maid of honor speeches and doing a poem has been the best.. once you start writing it, they are very
easy. You can be funny and emotional. It has been a real hit. And they are easy to remember.

I did the toast for my little sister's wedding and i think it went well. I started off by telling a story about me and her when we were kids. It went something like..."I can remember when we were young....." and I told the story about how I would always make her lunch or dinner when my parents were working. As we got older that was just the norm for me to cook for her. Well one day I was a senior in high school and she was a freshmen and she was just sitting at the table watching me make dinner for her when I realized she is old enough to make her own food and why was I still cooking for her? (It made everyone laugh and smile at the though of her just sitting there waiting) And then I said something about how life changes and we all grow up and now it is her turn to start a family and take care of her husband and future children cause I wasn't going to drive to her house and cook for her whole family LOL (which again made everyone smile) then just went on and said how happy I was for her and her husband and how important it is to listen to each other and live to make one another happy and that all the little things count and help make a marriage happy and healthy etc. I said a few more things about any advise i had on how to have a good marriage and then just gave them my blessing and congratulations. It went really well and I think if you speak from the heart it will be great. :)

I was the maid of honor once. I wrote a short speech touching a little on how the couple met, the proposal story (since it was a cute one), poked a little fun at how the wife is a vegetarian and the husband loves steak (opposites attract and all that) and then finished it off with a generic paragraph about marriage and their future life together which was:

"I am ecstatic for both of you. You truly complement one another. (husband) is good at breaking things and (wife) is a pro at putting them back together! You met as friends and it evolved into a love that so many people rarely find today. Love after all, doesn't make the world go around but love is what makes the ride worthwhile. And it's a wonderful thing when two people who get along so well manage to fall in love. So I'd like to make a toast. And I'd like to make it with this thought in mind: If there is such a thing as a good marriage, it is because it resembles friendship rather than love. So this is to you, (husband) and (wife). May all your married adventures be epic! Ladies and Gentlemen, to the Bride and Groom!"

I like it best when you keep it about her and her husband. What are you toasting to? Her happiness? Her future? Perhaps a bit of wisdom you can share from your own marriage or relationship. My lil sister got engaged and I gave a speech on a whim and it was mostly about how they have grown into adults together and they have taken all the right steps as bf/gf in making a foundation for a marriage. Good luck, I find it best to share from the heart.

Keep it simple, and short and S.. Find a quote that you like, or maybe a favorite of your sister, and incorporate that. Be heartfelt. If you have a cute story about how you and your sister used to dream about your weddings or something like that, you could tell it. You may also want to google wedding toasts, you can get a lot of ideas that way. One tip that I would not ignore, don't be drunk during your speech. Also, type it out on a small note card or piece of paper so you don't forget what you wanted to say. Good luck and have fun!

I gave my oldest friend a speech and made sure to keep it SHORT! No one wants to sit there and listen to you babble. Sorry couldn't find a nicer way to say it :) I can't tell you how many weddings I have been to where people just start talking to one another while the maid of honor or best man is droaning on an on about their childhood.

My cousin did her sister's speech and she took a really long piece of paper (a scroll) and let it unroll down the front of the table and then said "oh no I'm just kidding"...would have been hilarious had the speech actually been SHORT but she sort of went on. It was a nice speech but people stopped listening.

Speak to the bride and groom for the majority of the speech. The whole day is about them so the speech should be too. Say a few thoughtful words about your sister and how much fun you had as kids...maybe she used to pretend to me married to a celebrity? Make sure to say something nice to the groom as well. Then give an actual toast like "Now if we could all raise our glasses. To (bride and groom) I wish you as much love for the rest of your lives as you have for each other today."

I found it helpful to google wedding speeches to get ideas on how to begin and end a speech. There were a few helpful sites that helped me form a beginning, middle, and end to my speech and that gave me examples of how other speeches went.

When you finish writting you speech read it out loud a lot...try to time it if you can and try to read it to someone else too. That way you can cut out and add things.

Oh, and...don't forget to cry...that ALWAYS gets the crowd into it. I cried when I did my oldest friends speech and everyone cried right along with me. The funny thing was that I cried because I was nervous! My whole body was shaking and as I kept going with my speech I just started to cry. Worked to my advantage though! Speech was only about two to three minutes too. Nice and short.
Good luck and Best wishes to the bride!

Pick a few stories that highlight a special aspect of her personality, or of your relationship. A good speech conveys the relationship you two have and your hopes for their future. So build the ideas of those things around the stories you have.

My husband's best man gave the best wedding speech I can think of. His idea was how my husband was always passing him. He gave lots of examples, but here are the ones I remember. 1st the best man was OLDER and a year ahead in school. But my husband skipped a grade and they started college together. 2nd the best man took a year out of college to be a student missionary, so my husband beat him to college graduation. 3rd my husband was at his wedding day and the best man didn't even have a girlfriend... These were the main points, and it was really cute because his best man is incredibly SMART, he got a nearly perfect score on the MCAT that one takes before medical school. Everyone that knows him realizes this, and to see him taking a humble look at things was cute.

Hope this is helpful.
