Low Odor Paint?

Hi Moms,

Now that my son is 3 I would like to repaint his room and give him a new theme. I remember when my husband painted the nursery and it seemed that the paint smell hung around for weeks! My son wasn't born yet so I was able to keep the windows open in the room with a fan on for seveal days, but I won't be able to do that now. Has anyone used a certain brand of low-odor paint? How did it work and where did you purchase it?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Benjamin Moore's no VOC paints are highly rated and have worked well for us. They aren't cheap, however! They run $55-65 gallon. Lowe's Valspar paint is 50 VOC if I remember correctly, which is still very low. I believe a gallon is around $30. Valspar has great coverage; we've used it quite often. Lowe's also sells Olympic paints that are zero VOC but I've not tried that brand as the paint guy there said that Valspar is a better paint. In general, we've found low to no VOC paints to be a little thinner than regular paints but at what price health? :)

Low-VOC paints are well worth the extra money! You will not have odors and more importantly you will not have all the airborne chemicals you would inhale with regular paints.

These paints are now widely available which is great for you. We used low-VOC/low-odor paints by both Duron (cheaper) and Benjamin Moore recently in bedrooms. Virtually no smell and good paints too.

We used Freshaire Paint from Home Depot when we painted last year. You want to look for low VOC when looking for paint. And some places with low-VOC will say that they can color match. When they color match, they use product WITH voc in it in most cases (making it smelly and toxic again).

Freshaire didn't smell. It was weird! I'm so used to the odor when painting. We liked it, the only thing is in some spots it didn't seem to be an equal type of paint as to what we're used to. We painted the walls with rollers, then when we went to pain the edges with a paintbrush, for some reason, the paint didn't match the roller paint anymore...if that makes sense. The ONLY difference was that one was painted with a paintbrush and the other with a roller. It was the exact same can of paint. It ended up working fine for us, but it never matched perfectly. I just wanted to mention that there are differences in quality when you use a low-VOC or a no-VOC paint compared to normal paints.

And keep the windows open as much as possible when painting because the fumes can apparently hang around for years! We just can't smell them. With Freshaire paint, I'm not sure it matters, though. I think those paints are no VOC which is pretty awesome!

Any Epco/Ben Moore paint store. I worked as a designer in a custom furniture showroom and the brand we worked with and recommended. It is the only paint we used when we purchased our home 2 years ago and is well worth the extra money.

we used the Martha Stewart line from Home Depot. The colors were nice, the smell was minimal at best, but the coverage was a bit thin. Took 3+ coats to get a good result, especially on some of the darker colors we chose. I hear thought that red is always difficult.

Low- or NO- VOC paints are now readily available. Home Depot and some Lowe's stores carry the NO-VOC Yolo Colorhouse. To minimize the stink, go for the NO-VOC.

And they work like "regular" paint. No special techniques needed.

You can get them anywhere. Lowes, Home Depot, Sherwin Williams, etc. More costly though.

We use Olympic No VOC paint from Lowes. It's very affordable, and the quality is awesome. Lots of color choices, too. There is almost no smell. The little smell their happens to be, is not noxious.
