Low Grade Fevers

My 4 year old son has been running low grade fevers for 2 months. The temperature will be from 99.7 to 100.7. I have been writing down all the days on a calendar and I have shown it to his pediatrician. The have given him blood work for any worst case scenario because I showed the doctor that I was very worried about any underlying disease he would have. The blood work all came back with good results. He is still continuing to have these low grade fevers. I will be bringing him in again. I notice these fevers when he is playing video games as his ears are red. I feel his head and he'll have a low grade fever and I have taken him off all video games since then since they were happening alot playing these games. I have mentioned that also to the Dr and he said that when kids get excited they will show this sympton. Doesn't make too much sense to me. As we have taken him off the Video games he is still getting these low grade fevers and I am getting more worried. A child should not be feeling warm to the touch on and off on certain days. He has no other symptons and he doesn't complain about anything. Although, he tends to itch his eyes alot which his eye doctor said in the fall that he had a seasonal allergy because his eyes were terribly red. Now they are fine but I catch him touching them somteimes, as I tell him not too. Has anyone had a toddler that has had these on and off low grade fevers. I take his temperature rectally and the doctor has given me the ABC's of fevers which I already knew from my 1st child who is 12. I'm wondering if its anxiety because they always sem to come about during play time or watching a movie like Ironman or something of that nature.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your response. I will stop taking his temperature unless its noticeably high since he is acting completely normal and I am buying an ear therometer tomorrow. The doctor didn't say anything to me about the rectal thermometer not being healthy at this age, but your all right...it can lead to an infection. I also don't want to give him a complex since he just mentioned to his father that he didn't get a fever because he didn't play video games. I was just really concerned. Sometimes being too concerned is not good too. Your opinion helps. I was definitely looking for advice from experienced mothers. Thank you again!

I suggest that his temperature is well within a normal range. http://firstaid.webmd.com/body-temperature
Here is a web site explaining about body temperature. I suggest you're using oral normal temps for comparison and you're taking his temp rectally.

The doctor has already told you that playing a video game can raise body temperature because the player is excited. I suggest that you accept that for now. I do know that my grandson's face gets flushed when he's playing on the computer. Seems natural to me. Excitement raises blood pressure.

My grandson, who is 7, has always felt warm to the touch off and on. We just consider it normal and haven't taken his temperature. He may have low grade temps but because he's acting fine we aren't concerned. You've taken him to the doctor and have ruled out illness. Try to relax.

I strongly suggest that your extreme concern is contributing to the problem if it's even a problem. My doctor has told me that low grade temperatures are normal and not necessarily a sign of a fever. Could you try letting go of your concern for a few weeks and see what happens?

At age 4, it's not a good idea to continue taking his temperature rectally. Also I suggest that 99 rectally is a normal temp. I suggest that you're putting too much emphasis on his body which can cause him to become overly concerned and hamper his ability to live life normally.

Sounds like he's just getting excited and warm. I wouldn't worry about it. There's no need to take his temperature every time he feels warm, especially rectally. Most likely his core temperature is high due to the excitement or the physical activity.

Kids have different base temperatures. I have always had a lower temperature. So, when my temp is 100 it's pretty bad fever for me. His standard temperature, is probably just warmer. If there are no other symptoms and his blood work is normal, then I don't think you should worry. His temp is in a normal range. I'm amazed that a 4 year old will routinely let you do this rectally!! I would think you don't really need to do that so often. He sounds fine.

it could be due to allergies, if he is still itching his eyes, or he could just run warm, my husbands temperature is almost always 99 and his blood pressure really low.
And I just have to say it buy an ear thermometer really he is 4 years old taking a rectal temp at this age is really not healthy.
And just leave him alone for a few days stop worrying I have to agree with Marda your concern is stressing him out.

I don't even know how old this is, but the same thing is happen with my 2 year old. It's perfectly fine that you are worried/were worried! It's a crappy feeling to take the LO to the doctor FINALLY, after keeping a watchful eye and waiting to get to the doc and have them be dismissive like it's nothing and you are crazy. (This happened to us last night). I'd waited 2 weeks of his temp spiking from 99.7 to 100.7 before I took him, eye rubbing and red ears too! The doc said it's nothing. I just feel in my gut that it might be something. Do you have any updates???? A mommas gutt feeling is usually right, and this is the first time mines ever failed me. :( and he doesn't just "run hot" as some people suggested towards you. I take his temp every day so that I'll know his normal basal body temp. I use a temporal thermometer. His average is 98.2.....then these spikes! Please let me know if you have any information or updates thanks!!!

I wouldn't be worried. Some children do run a warmer temperature and I do not consider a 99 temp a fever in a child this young. What time are you taking his temp and is the temp consistent throughout the entire day from the time you take his temp? For example, do you take it first thing in the morning before he has eaten and had anything to drink and is his temp "normal" at that time? Are you taking his temp several times a day to note if his temp is changing or are you going by only one temp? If the ped says not to worry and the blood tests are normal, I wouldn't worry.
