Lovebird Behavior

My daughter got a young, handfed lovebird a few days ago. He is super sweet and adores riding around with her and cuddles under her neck and hair. He seems fine wen she is with him, but when she is at school, he just sits in his cage, sleeps alot and doesn't make much noise. He seems to eat fine. Occasionally he runs around and plays if he sees another outside bird on the feeder.

I am worried he may be sick, but he acts happy and active when she is home. Is he just missing her?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the info! I am now convinced he is just bored and missing his love (my daughter). As soon as my daughter walks in the door, "Peep" goes bonkers. I do talk with him and sometimes take him out, but he adores her - I'm a barely passable substitute. He even took a bath and is now watching Harry Potter while preening himself and sitting on her head.

He is on Zupreem pellets and Econutrition. We cover him every night and he has loads of high-end toys, natural manzanita branches, a huge cage and a snuggle tent (which he adores). I have got to say this lovebird is such a sweetie - what a great companion for a 10 year old girl! Highly recommend one!

Thanks!

Well, he's just a baby, so he might well need the rest. But you could give the breeder a call just to make sure. If you didn't get him from a breeder, call your vet.

Make sure he has toys to play with in his cage. Birds need to keep busy to be happy. I'm so glad your daughter is socializing him well. Birds live in communities in the wild, as you know, and they really do need attention in order not to be lonely and depressed. But I doubt that your bird is depressed.

You might try making friends with him yourself while your daughter is at school. It would be good for him to know you well, anyhow, in case of any emergency.

My sister had a lovebird (granted - it was years ago!). They are very social. If you can, play with him even when she is at school. They can get grumpy, and will prefer one person over another if they have a favorite person (i.e.- they can get literally snippy and bite). There are little play stands for birds that will let him roam around out of the cage - just be sure his wings are clipped on a regular basis so he can't fly all over the house.
My mom has a parrot that is now 28, and we have had birds since I was about 8. They are great pets, but they take a lot of care and attention.

Bird person here! If he is not sitting in the cage puffed up he is probably fine. They sleep a lot when they are young and then again when they get old. If he is eating and pooping and is interactive with your daughter, he is probably ok. Even though birds tend to 'mask' when they are ill; you can still usually tell. As long as his eyes are clear, his nostrils are clear, his feathers lay down, he is eating and pooping; he is more than likely fine. Love birds are very social and is probably just bored and in the need of love and social interaction when your daughter is at school. I would not recommend buying another one if you want him to bond with her. If you do, he will make the bird his mate and not your daughter. Do you cover his cage at night and uncover him in the morning? He should be getting at least 12 hours of covered sleep especially when they are young. I hope you have him on a pellet diet; NOT SEED. Seeds are a treat and yes they can have those too, but in small quantities. Give him fresh fruit as well.... They love it and it is good for them. Another FYI.... I sure hope you do not cook with teflon skillets in your house. THis will also make them sick.
So if he is reactive with her and gets excited when he sees another bird, he is probably bored!. Get him a lot of interactive toys. You can get a mirror too, just be aware they sometimes "fall in love" with the bird in the mirror... Hope this helps.

I agree with Michelle M 100%. I'm a bird person and she gave you lots of good information.

I do want to repeat one thing though, don't get another love bird. Two love birds will bond together and they won't want as much attention from your daughter and could even turn agressive towards her.
