Hi, I've been a little sick (not TOO bad). My throat has been scratchy and I'm a little congested. Well I went out last night and it was loud where I was and I was talking to my friends alot and now my voice is almost completely gone.

Any home remedies to help get my voice back? (or over the counter medicine?)

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

gargle with raw apple cider vinegar also no dairy and no sugar, dairy congests and sugar weakens the immune system. It takes the body 1 week to discharge a tsp of sugar

DO NOT WHISPER! It only puts more strain on your voice. I used to be a theatre major before I had my son and we are required to take a voice and diction class. In that class we had a whole week dedicated as to what to do when you lose your voice. Try and talk normally. Your voice box is used to that so when you put the added strain of whispering on top of tired vocal chords. . .Well I'm sure you can do the math. If you take cough drops make sure its none menthalated. Menthol can dry out your vocal chords to much which is bad because they need to be moist in order to work properly. I like Hall's Fruit Breezers.

I lose my voice at least once every year. There is a tea called Throat Coat with slippery elm that is very soothing--you can get it at a lot of grocery stores in the "natural" aisle and I am sure you could find it at a Wild Oats/Whole Foods if you have one in your area. Places like the Vitamin Shoppe also carry lozenges with slippery elm.

The BEST thing is to rest your voice. Lots of hot tea with lemon and honey. Avoid dairy.

The mucus could be stuck in your throat and making it hard to speak. If it feels like a common cold, take a lot of warm liquids and try an expectorant in addition to eucalyptus cough drops which help open the passages. Try to rest, including allowing your voice to rest. If it feels like more than a common cold, there is throat pain, and/or it won't go away, it may be laryngitis, in which case I'd ask the doctor for advice on treatment.

In addition to the previous responses, let me add: When it IS necessary for you to speak, DON"T try to whisper. Use your normal voice as much as you are able. It is harder on your vocal cords to "whisper" than to "talk".

Hope your voice is back soon!

Peppermint candies or chamomile tea with honey & lemon. It can soothe your throat and ease discomfort/irritation so it doesn't get any worse, but as for getting your voice back it may take a few days to completely come back.

I had this same thing happen a week ago! It's SO annoying, isn't it? Drink warm tea with lemon & honey, use some Riccola throat drops and try not to use your voice much. (Easier said than done!) Mine lasted about 3 days where it was at it's worst.

Drink lots of water and don't try to talk...you could also try cough drops..but not the menthol or minty kind..try the honey kind...menthol will dry your throat.
Other than that you could try and google lost voice remedies.

Good luck!

THis happens to me several times a yr when I get a cold or scratchy/sore throat I often lose my voice. My Dr says that I need to really limit my talking for a few days when this happens and treat the cold with over the counter meds. I find very hot water with lemon and honey helps but resting the voice is the best rememdy. It is hard to do when you are a teacher! Good luck Mom

Aww. Best thing you can do is not talk. WHisper only. I suggest gargling with warm salt water a few times during the day, and bathing your throat with a spoonful of honey now and then. You'll be back to normal in a couple of days.

Rest, rest and more rest. That is it. Drugs only mask the symptoms and you need your voice to heal.
Sip warm honey water and rest.
Rest your body, rest your voice.
Do not push it.
In 2003 I "pushed it". I was a school teacher and for the entire month of September I "pushed it". Then I pushed it through October and half of November until I was diagnosed with "chronic Laryngitis". Doesn't sound too scary until you have it. I have done permanent damage to my vocal cords. When I am in a loud or long conversation, my voice cracks and goes hoarse. Please do not let that happen to you.
