Losing 1St Tooth and I Need Tooth Fairy Information...

Our oldest son, (will be six in a couple weeks) is losing his first tooth. I imagine it will come out any day now. He is all about the Tooth Fairy. So, my question, silly as it may seem, is what exactly is the Tooth Fairy paying these days? I know that the children will be talking about this at school, and I just want to know what other people are doing. Any ideas, suggestions, are welcome and appreciated...I need the help and education.

Thank you so much for you time and help!

So What Happened?

First, I want to thank all of you for your time and wonderful advice and help. I was really streesing this! He lost his tooth this morning in the car on the way to Grandma and Grandpa's house! We stopped the car, took the pictures, put the tooth in a Tic-Tac box(empty one of course), and talked about it all the way to the Grandparents' house. We will be putting it out for the Tooth Fairy tonight in the box he got from school. I think we will go with the 'gold dollar' for every tooth to keep things smooth and not have to explain why his next tooth wasn't worth as much. I like the idea of the note from the fairy too, so I am going to do that as well. Thankfully, we have a gold dollar in a drawer so we are prepared..sort of. :) He already has another loose tooth..right next to the one that came out...so I guess we will be needing to go to the bank soon because at this rate we will be needing to increase our supply of gold dollars. :)

Thanks again to all of you for your time and wonderfully helpful replies. All the best to you all!!

We tell the kids that the tooth fairy loves and pays more for nice clean brushed teeth with no cavaties/filings. If the teeth are dirty and unbrushed or with filings, she'll leave a penny.

We leave $5 for nice clean brushed teeth with no cavities.

We do a dollar per tooth. My 8yo though has mentioned that other kids get different amounts than him. I think $20 was the most outrageous. Had to respond to this request though as he was talking about the tooth fairy at dinner and he told us that he thinks we are the tooth fairy because she only brings a dollar and we (mommy and daddy) don't have much money. LOL!

We probably won't do money. We did a sheet of My Little Pony stickers and a note from the Tooth Fairy. Our five-year-old loved it. :)

My oldest just lost her first tooth and then a day later the next. The tooth fairy left her an electric toothbrush and $1. Then the next night she left another $1.

The tooth fairy in my brother's house leave much more than that, but I have pretty big issues with over-indulging children.

Mine are very appreciative of what they get from anyone and they really get excited about little things. They also work very hard to save up for special things they want. Right now they are doing chores from a specified list earning 10 cents a chore to buy a hamster. They are very excited and love to color in the $1 blocks on their graph we made.

Seriously, I think the first tooth is special and maybe a little gift is nice, but after that I think the $1 our tooth fairy left was generous.

:) We love to pretend about the tooth fairy. My son thinks it's hilarious that I think the tooth fairy is "real".
We do a dollar under the pillow. I think any more than that is crazy for a six year old.
I hope it comes out soon! It's alot of fun to make a big deal about it! :)

I read a book called "The Real Tooth Fairy" to my girl. At first I thought "uh-oh" they were going to ruin everything because in the story the girl catches her Mom putting the money under her pillow. Then her Mom tells her the very clever story about how the tooth fairy actually comes to your room looking like someone you love because she is worried that her true glowing presence might scare kids. You won't know who it might be but she'll be sure to look like Mom, Dad or a sibling to make sure you don't get scared. Great story for if you get busted!

Our tooth fairy gives out gold dollars, but I have heard some giving out $7 per tooth, and once even $15 which I think is insane! My daughter gets pretty excited over the gold dollar, so we are sticking with that.

Hi L. I don't know what the rate is for tooth fairy these days but when I was a little girl my mother would put nickel under my pillow. I'm now sixty years old. So fifty cents or a dollar would be reasonable amount.

I just wanted to share a funny story! We always got a dollar growing up. One night the tooth fairy was extreamly tired, but did the tooth fairy thing. The next morning my brother got up all excited and said Mom, look the tooth fairy left me $10!!! How do you tell your child the tooth fairy left the wrong amount?!?!

We also do gold dollars. $5 for the first tooth and $3 for each tooth thereafter. Our pediatric dentist gave us cool treasure chest tooth fairy boxes.

For us a dollar is normal.. There have been times where they goit 2, for a pulled tooth (adult tooth growing over baby tooth that wouldnt come out) and my youngest got 5 for her last one only because of the circumstances (we were out on the river, and she is one who hates having her teeth fall out, but since we were out and about and it was dangling i talked her into letting it be pulled. she was so brave about it, that everyone with us gave her a buck-4 adults in all- and the tooth fairy left one as well.
a dollar is good enough.....think about it...three kids, all going to loose teeth within a few years of eachother....if you go 5 like some do, you may go broke LOL :P

The amount of money should be minimal. The important part is the tradition and excitement. The Tooth Fairy is not supposed to be a money-making opportunity.

We give 2 quarters. 4 quarters for a first tooth or a big front tooth.

The kids are just amazed that the switch happened while they slept, and how cool the whole thing is. Don't make it about a big cash payout.

This is your chance to set your values into motion in fairytale area of life. 5o what you feel is appropriaten what you feel you can keep up with when there are three boys dropping teeth, and a tradition that is easiest enough to stick to even is employment or bills become hard. Don't try to keep up with vthe Jone's as most will fail at it in some way. That b eing said we got the 1.00 coins and they get one per tooth.

Hi Leslie-

WOW 3 boys under 5, you are one busy lady!! :) I have 2 boys, they are older now, but aren't boys the best? Anyway, the tooth fairy payments are all over the board these days. We gave our kids $5 for the first tooth, and then ususally $1 for the rest. I don't really remember them talking to their friends too much about it. Some parents go overboard ( I know this from talking to them myself) but generally I think $1 is the standard, especially if you have 3 boys under 5, more than $1 could get really expensive!!! My kids were slow teeth losers, so my youngest is 10 and has only lost 8 teeth. He already knows there is no tooth fairy, but we still go through the routine of the pillow and dollar. Have fun with those boys!!

We do Gold Dollar coins. My son is really funny because he refused to leave his tooth for a fairy. So we had to call on the "tooth mouse" It was pretty funny. 5 teeth later and the mouse is still going strong :) Hope your son enjoys his visit from the tooth professional.

I love seeing all of these responses. It really brings back memories. My parents always did whatever was on hand but the tooth fairy usually left a $2 bill or a $0.50 piece. You don't really see these in circulation a lot anymore and it was great getting something that might have at one point been Grandpa's. I still have all of mine. Although I have to admit I did receive an orange one time (couldn't figure out what the big lump was under my pillow), and another time received some bandaids. I'd like to chalk it up to my parents having a great sense of humor but I think it was more an issue that nothing else was on hand. LOL.

Hope you at least get a laugh out of this post if nothing else. :-)

can't help you with amount lol as it varies depending on what i have in the purse lol. usually more for the first than any others but something we started years ago is the tooth has to be wrapped in toilet paper and put into an envelope under childs pillow. (this helps find it in the night lol) good luck

As you can clearly see from the answers, the amount varies, even the source varies.
I have friends whose "tooth professional" brings books.
In our house, the rule is a quarter.
I think it all depends upon what you are able to do and what you hope your child will learn from the experience.

You know your child. give him what will get him excited.

Hi, I think the "tooth fairy" has gotten on out hand with money (in my opinion). I talk to some of my friend, and they give $20 for the 1st tooth $5.00 for the next three, then $2.00.... I am like "what" - waaaayyyyy to confusing.... I merely gave the same for every tooth my daughter has lost - she lost 8 so far - the first one being when she was a week before her 5th birthday! Anyway, we give a "Golden Dollar", and my daughter just loved it! For the first tooth, we also printed up a piece of paper and I copied and pasted stuff that I got off the internet...yep, google "tooth fairy", and you will get LOTS of info! My daughter kept those papers and the envelope, and each time puts the gold dollars in the same envelope and counts them every time she loses another tooth! Awesome! She said she is going to wait until they are all gone and then by something! Also, we have a pillow, but we wrap the tooth in a snack bag, so it doesn't get lost, and then put the gold dollar in the same snack bag!!! I don't think they throught this tooth fairy pillow all the way through! ha! But it is adorable, and we have made it work!

Congrats on the 1st tooth!!! Wow, can you believe how time flies???? All the best to you and your family.

Just keep in mind that what ever you decide to do for the first your going to have to stick with for the rest. We give $5.00 for the 2 big front teeth and $2.00 for the rest but if I had it to do over I would probably give less. We also have a tooth fairy pillow that we attached ribbon to and hang on the outside of the door and it works great. There were too many times with my oldest the tooth fairy was tired they fell asleep and forgot to go in his room. With it on the outside of the door if I foget I can still do it in the morning without waking them. Also if his tooth is going to come out any day now make sure you have the cash ready.
