Looking to Relocating to Hales Corners

D.W. asks from Hales Corners, WI

My husband may be getting a new job in Milwaukee and we've looked at Hales Corners to move to. The schools are the most important because my daughter will be starting kindergarten next year. Although we lived in Chicago and parts of WI in the past I don't know enough about other Milwaukee suburbs to know if Hales Corners is the best place for us. I know we'd have to rent because we will have to rent our house out here in Virginia Beach and can't have two mortgages. I'm basically looking for info on schools, neighborhoods, stores etc. Any advice about moving there. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Here are two websites with information on schools. Great Schools has a wonderful comparison feature, as does the Wisconsin DPI site (mostly test score data).

http://dpi.state.wi.us/sig/index.html

Get as much info as you can, then visit the schools you are interested in. It's very important that you go while school is in session so that you can get a feel for how students & staff interact. You should also take your kids with you to see how they respond to the different school environments.

Good luck with your move!

I grew up in Greenfield which neighbors Hales Corners. I had tons of friends who lived in Hales Corners and I went to the schools in the Hales Corners district. It is an absolutely incredible place to live. Very hard to get into it though! People rarely leave once they are in!

I went to Hales Corners Elementary School, Whitnall Middle School, and then Whitnall High School. They are the only option for public school in the district and they are fantastic. Great schools and great teachers. The most popular private schools are Hales Corners Lutheran Church and School, and St. Mary's Catholic Church and School. We belong to H.C. Lutheran and love it.

Aside from the schools, the area itself is great. There is a big park with a swimming and wading pool in the middle of the village where they have a huge 4th of July festival, parade and fireworks every year. Everything you need for shopping and restaurants is right on the main highway, and they are completely up to date. It is a very friendly community and I think you would have a great life there.

I would love to help if I could. I live in Wauwatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee, so I know the area fairly well. However, my daughter is 16 months so I don't know much about the schools yet. What kind of area are you looking to live in? (culture, schools, neighborhoods, shopping, conservative vs.liberal, old vs new housing, etc) What do you like best about your current neighborhood? Anything you can tell me about what kind of area you'd like to live in, would be great.

I grew up in Hales Corners and loved it. I don't know a whole lot about the public schools since I went to all Catholic schools growing up. I attended St. Marys in Hales Corners and Pius XI High School (which is located in Milwaukee but close to Wauwatosa). I loved both of those schools, although it was awhile ago. I really liked, and still like, Hales Corners. My parents still live near there. I'm looking forward to checking out the sites others gave you since my oldest will be in Kindergarden next year as well. Good Luck!

I think you might like to check out Menomonee Falls too. They have lots of great neighborhoods, good schools, some of your shopping needs with major chains for example Kohl's, Penny's, Target, Home Depot, and it is close to other malls with nicer department stores such as Macy's. You might want to call the Chamber for information too and their number is ###-###-####. We moved to Wisconsin seven years ago and to Menomonee Falls one and a half years ago and like it best in the Falls. It also has an active Newcomers group to help make some new friends also. --R. H.
