I am looking for winter swim lessons for my 5 year old son. We are relatively new to the area and I always seem to miss the deadlines for these classes.
Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I've heard alot about the North Hills Y as well, but to be honest, it's pretty expensive. You have to join the Y ($100+ initiation fee) plus pay monthly fees, then pay for the lessons on top of that.

North Hills School district offers lessons at a very reasonable price (around $35, I think). You've missed the fall deadlines, but they will have lessons in the spring semester too. Signups will be on Feb 3. It's not up yet, but closer to that time, they will put a flyer up on the website attached to the Feb 3 calendar - check on it early after the new year (http://www.nhsd.net/calendar_events.cfm).

North Allegheny and Shaler school distrcits probably have similar programs, but I haven't looked at theirs.

Good luck!

S.,

Try your local YMCA. Thats the best and first place to go. Then see if your local pools have an indoor facility and offer swim lessons. The other would be your local Parks and Rec. department.

There's a great YMCA in Wexford/Franklin Park. I think it opened a year or two ago, but it's a great facility. You could also try calling North Hills High School, as they also have an indoor pool. I'm not sure if they have swimming lessons there on the weekends, but I'm sure someone at the school (or the school district office) would be able to tell you.

Hi S. -

The Baierl Family YMCA & has alot of swim lessons & other programs. The new session should be starting soon, so I would call them to see when the sign up is.

Have fun!!

I also know that North Allegheny runs lessons and things.

Here was from the website:

Community Swimming/SWIM LESSON BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER 22
Tiny Tigers swim lessons will begin on September 22 and go for two weeks, followed by two weeks of beginners, and then by two weeks of intermediates. All lessons will be from7 to 7:30 pm. Monday through Thursday of those weeks. Cost of swimming/diving lessons is $70 per student without a pool membership. With a pool membership, the cost of each lesson is $35 per student.

I would check North Hills Y - I don't know what their registration/schedule is like, but they have a ton of programs.

The Bairel Center is a really nice facility but as the other moms have said it is a bit pricey. The schools are done for the most part until the Spring, but one place that no one mentioned is the Sewickley YMCA. They have a great pool for children and also it is more reasonable for swim lessons there. You could also try CCAC and see of there are any lessons offered in the fall semester at any of the local schools. There is also a place northeast of the city (Fox Chapel area) that used to offer classes on the weekend--it might have been through CCAC though. Let me know if you have any additional questions. The program at NAHS is nice for the money, but it is squeezed into 2 weeks.
