Looking for Wigs

Hi All,
My mom is currently going through chemo and has lost all of her hair. She is now looking for a good wig. She had ordered one from a catalog that she was given at the doctor's, but was extremely disappointed by its quality (though not surprised!). Her hairdresser had something lined up but that fell through. Right now she has an appointment at A'Colsha in Plainfield for later this week. Does anyone have feedback on this place or have any other suggestions? My mom lives in the southern burbs, but I'm in Plainfield and she can head out this way. But we don't want anything too far away, she is not a fan of driving! Thanks so much.

Love A'Colsha. My hairdresser is Colleen(one of the owners) - the other is Sharon. They are super nice. No experience with their wigs though. HTH

My mom is a breast cancer survivor and has been going to the Image Renewal Center at The Loyola Hospital Bernadin Cancer Center. They specialize in wigs, hair cuts, and bra fittings (for prostheses). My mom loves them and raves about how awesome they are in working with her. The phone number is ###-###-####. She's not sure if they take non-Loyola Hospital patients, so here is another place that is probably closer to your mom anyway. It's called Naturally Yours and it's at 7219 Kingery Highway Wilowbrook, IL 60527 ###-###-####. She says they are awesome too and really fast and everything is private. They have a bigger inventory of wigs than Loyola does with wigs that you can try on to get a feel for how it looks. You may have to order the right color from the catalog, but she could at least try on the style. Hope that helps and good luck to your mom! Tell her there is a light at the end of the tunnel and she will get through this!

If you are looking for quality and price, try Beauty Trends. They can be found on the web at Beautytrends.com. They handle Adolfo, Revlon and their own brand. You can request samples of three different hair colors. if you want the best selection in colors you may end up with a newer wig style that runs from $60 up to $150. If you have some color options, they have great styles for less than $60 on sale now. I have purchased three of them so far and every one has been great.

My sister did use a catalog, which may be the same one that your mom used. I've included the web-site. I'm so sorry that you and she are going through this. I hope the outcome is as positive as my sister - she has leukemia and it's been quite a road - however, she's doing fantastically and her hair is thick and beautiful! Best of luck to you.

Hi E. -
First I wanted to wish your mom the best. My mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few years back - did chemo and radiation and so far, so good!

When my mom lost her hair, we went to Naturally Yours... I can't think of what town it's in.... but it's on Rt. 83/Kingery Hwy....maybe Westchester? It's really not too far away -- and they were AMAZING there!!! So very nice and helpful. They actually shaved my mom's head -- her hair had started falling out but it was falling out in clumps -- and fit her for the wig, cut the wig to match her prev. hairstyle....everything! And they have a ton of scarves and hats there as well! I'd highly recommend it.

The other thing we learned is that the American Cancer Society gives away free wigs! I don't remember how we found out about that - but I went there once on my lunch break from work (It's in Oakbrook) and they had a ton to choose from. My mom had grey hair -- so thre wasn't a lot to choose from -- but we did find one and we brought it with to Naturally Yours and they cut and styled that one as well - so my mom had a "spare."

Good luck!

Sorry to hear that you and your mom are going through tough times. I don't have cancer, but I have alopecia aerota, so I have worn wigs for about 10 years. I have had Paula Young wigs and now I wear wigs which are hand-tied (not wefted) and are more comfortable. The place I currently get them from is Images, in Oak Brook, but the ones I get are several hundred dollars. If you want to e-mail me privately, I would like to help! J.
