Have you tried the library reading program? I don't know about Richardson's program because I live in north Dallas. But Dallas' summer reading program is wonderful. You could find out about Richardson's or see if Dallas would allow you to do theirs. I think that they would.

Hi there,
Has your son been tested for any sort of learning disablilty? I would first go that route if you have not and see what is going on as to why he struggles. Also too, I would suggest getting a tutor who can come to the home over the summer about 2-3 times a week, don't go to sylvan, they are too much... I would try to find a tutor through your child's school, hey maybe on here at mamasource there is one. We did that with our daughter who struggles with math and it made a world of difference a couple of years ago.
I also volunteer with readers at my daughter's school and have done this for 2 years. I would too read with him.
Get a book and read and re read it together. Sit together and point at every word on the page and sound out difficult ones. At the end of the book, ask him questions what the book is about. At his age, it is important to have things concentrated and repetative. They learn at that age by repeating the same thing. I would read every day together for about an hour.... Let me know how it goes.. :)

I'm not sure how much you'd like to spend, so I'll give you a couple of options in my advice. First, check through your schools guidence department. Often they have names of summer tutors. You may also check out your local parks and recreation guide. I know that our's came out last year with a reading for first graders class. If you want to go for a more expensive route, I've heard nothing but good things about Sylvain (sp??) Learning. They do all year long tutoring, but they're excellent as I've been told. You could also look into Hooked on Phonics. It worked for my nephew, who really struggled with reading. Good Luck!

hi! this is my first response, so i hope it helps! i taught kindergarten for 3 years (2 in plano isd) before staying at home with my now 6 1/2 month old. my advise would be to get a tutor to come over once or twice a week for about an hour to an hour and a half or so total. i acutally used to do this and it really helped the child because it was one on one interaction. you can ask your child's current teacher if she/he knows anyone or i can see if some former teacher friends of mine would be interested if you want. it's a bit more expensive than a whole group type setting, but your child with get tailored instruction and one on one interaction with a teacher, which is always the best. that way, someone can focus directly on the specific aspects your child needs help in. if you can't find anyone or it is out of your price range, send me an e-mail and i have tons of info i can send your way including some reading strategies and activities that could help your child. i hope this helps :)

Hooked on Phonics helped a friend of mine.
Give him a lot of love and support. Read with him every chance you get.
Good Luck.

Have you looked into Kumon? My son's friend attends class there for reading support and seems to be improving quite a bit. Visit www.kumon.com for a center nearest you.

You might check with your local library. They usually offer some time of incentive to read during the summer months.

I absolutely recommend looking into Lindamood-Bell. They have summer programs, alternative to school programs, etc. to help children with spelling, reading, comprehension, even math. Their results are amazing, catching kids up to their grade level.

I used to work at one, they really focus on the way your child processes information and works with them from there (elementary schools overlook/can't fully address this.) They teach any child, gifted or whatever level. I could go on...
