Hi!
We are looking for a Pediatrician in the St. Paul area. This is our first child and have no idea where to start...Pediatrician or Family Practice doc?

Any suggestions or referrals are greatly appreciated!

When we lived by St. Paul we used Dr. Plotnik at Pediatric and Young adult Medicine (PYAM). We have now moved to Woodbury so we switched to someplace closer, but we really like PYAM. One bonus of that office (and one our new place does not have) is that you can call their direct # and talk to a Dr. any time during the day - so it is nice when you have a quick question about medicine dosage or want to know if you should bring the baby in - no waiting for a call back. They take 3 calls during office visits, so you have to be willing to let them answer a call while you are meeting with them, but the calls usually last only a minute. Anyway, we have enjoyed working with pediatricians. But that's just our experience!

Hi L.,
Congratulations! Are you going to a clinic now for prenatal care? if so, do they have pediatricians? Sorry if that's a basic question-but it came to mind. OR, do you have health coverage that decides who you visit? If so, usually insurance companies will have bios of their doctors on their websites and so you could do some online research before making any appointments. You can also do 'interviews' where you make an appt (about 15 minutes) to speak with a pediatrician about their beliefs, type of practice etc. This gives you an opportunity to get a feel for their office, approach and such. We did that for our son (also our first)-you can find lists of 'recommended questions' online. I choose a pediatrician, but honestly, at this point I see whoever is available and just stick to my instinct and beliefs about what procedures to have done, or not (circumcision, shots, etc).

Good luck with everything!

I'm partial to family doctors--they can get to know and treat your whole family and have good pediatric training. If you have any special needs children however, depending on what is wrong, sometimes a pediatrician has more patients with that condition. Your family doctor would then just let you know that she/he would like your child to see a pediatrician or specialists. Where specifically do you live? Does your health insurance limit your options? Good luck!!

We LOVE Dr. Denise Long at Highland Family Physicians. She has gone above and beyond in caring for our children, both of which needed a little extra TLC the first few weeks of their lives.

She has privleges at St. Joe's and United and so can begin treating your baby immediately if you're in either of thos hospitals. She's a family practictioner, which I love, because she looks out for my well-being too. If you can't get in to see her, I've liked Drs. Tetlie, Touhy, and Lewis as well.

I have a new born and did a lot of searching for Pediatric doctors. I would recommend setting up a consult with any Dr before you actually choose one, so that way you can meet them first and decide whether or not they would be the Dr you would want to go with. I would highly recommend Dr. Tammi Plotnik. She is with Pediatric and Young Adult Medicine. One of their offices is located in downtown Saint Paul off of Grand Ave. She is Phenomenal and anytime you have questions all Drs carry a phone and you can just call your dr. directly. She is very interactive with my chid.
