We are in urgent need of finding a nursing home to care for our grandfather. He is in poor health and on medicare and medicade. He currently lives with his wife in an assited living facility that has nurses on site, but today she suffered massive bleeding on the brain and isn't likely to recover. If this is indeed the end, Grandpa will have to move because he can't afford that place by himself. My husband's mom, his daughter, asked us to please get office hours, phone number and name of person I can talk to if the places look okay, will you? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your help and suggestions. We were able to find an assisted living facility in Royal Oak called American House that provides his meals, does laundry and housekeeping for him and has on site medical help when needed. Grandpa's wife passed away later on the same day, but now he'll only be about 10 minutes away and we can visit him more frequently and help him out.

The easiest way this can be done is to have his doc admit him to the hospital for evaluation or to resolve some problems, then have the hospital social worker find him a bed. Then he'd be eligible for a medicare bed until that ran out. Otherwise, you need to get ahold of the book the social workers use that lists the info on all the nursing homes and whether they take medicaid patients. The trick is that, even if they generally don't take medicaid, they may be able to switch him once the medicare runs out if they're committed to keeping him. Some fancy places just won't deal with medicaid. You can try calling the senior services office in the neighborhood where you want him to be placed. It may be listed under Area Agency for Aging. They may have the book. There's also an agency that evaluates nursin homes - I think it's something like Citizens for Better Care - and they can tell you about the homes in the area you want. If your grandma has been admitted to the hospital, the social worker there may be able to help you or someone connected with her hospice services. That might be the best place to start.

Hi E., My name is K.. First let me extend my sympathies and care for your dear grandparents. It must be so hard for you and your family at this time.

I have heard many good reports about Evangelical
Home of Sterling Heights, 14900 Shoreline, Sterling Heights, Mich. ###-###-####. I am not sure if they take
Medicare/Medicade. I do know they are a Christian business.

I pray that the Lord leads. comforts, and guides you and your family at this difficult time. K.

I highly recommend the website healthgrades.com - they allow you to order quality reports on nursing homes ($19.95 to compare 10 nursing homes of your choice anywhere in the country). These quality reports are based on the state inspections that occur every 9-15 months and are very reliable and unbiased. They should also tell you if the nursing home accepts medicare/medicaid. Another resource is medicare.gov - the find the "nursing home compare" area. This won't give you as good of quality data on the nursing homes as healthgrades gives but it will definitely tell you whether or not they accept medicare/medicaid.

There is a new rating system for nursing homes. I think you can probably access the rating at michigan.gov..

I would try calling the Area agency on aging there is one for Oakland county and one for macomb county..

Try citizens for better care.. it is in detroit...

They are an agency that helps with nursing home questions and problems..

You really have to go visit the nursing home that you are considering..The # 1 criteria should be location.. you want to be able to visit frequently to check on the your loved one.

So start with the phone book and find the closest nursing homes and call them to see if they have beds available tghen go for a visit. See how is looks do the residents seem happy and well cared for.?

My mom was in Bortz of Warren..(10 and mound ) overall the care was good.

Macomb county has more nursing hmes than oakland county.

If you go to the Michigan.gov website, you can locate all the nursing homes in your area(there's a drop down menu on the home page) and they also include the latest results from the state inspections which are important to consider. You should tour all of the nursing homes which interest you and call first and talk to the person in charge of admissions, they will have all the information that you will need plus it saves a wasted trip if they are out of the building. Sometimes it is easier to be placed in a facility from the hospital but if he is already eligible for medicaid then you have time to shop around and find the best place, good luck. One more piece of advice is to visit often and get to know the staff.

E.,
My grandmother was at Medilodge of Richmond. Its not a palace by any means but the people there were all wonderful to my Grandma and took very good care of her. We would also go every week to visit her and got to know everyone that worked there. The more you know the people, I think the better care you get. Its a great facility...good people and in the little town of Richmond.
