Looking for Gift Ideas for 1-Year-old

My son turns one this month and I'm looking for ideas for a gift for him. He's the youngest of three, so he has a lot of hand-me-down clothes and toys from his older brother and sister. We have all the typical baby toys - so I don't really want to spend money on something he's going to outgrow quickly. I would rather buy him something different that will hold his interest for a while. Something educational is also a plus. Any and all ideas are welcome!

My son got two different Leap Frog tables, and a little house-tent thing. Two years later, he still plays with them. He tries to take his naps in the house!

I would always recommend a good book. My son loves when we read to him. If you found a good book that is just his, it will hold special meaning for life.

Books are the best gift can be used over and over.
One that I like and can learn and play with is
1,2,3 Jigsaw Book teaches about counting and at the end of the book you have a puzzle that is an ABC's trains
Kane Miller makes one called Sun that I enjoy too.
These plus numerous other board books can be found at www.ubah.com/z2937

Have you heard of Discovery Toys? They are educational, grow with your child and have a lifetime warranty. I love the stacking cups..they can be used for stacking, sorting, counting, math and even make great bath toys for a change of pace. They cost about $10 and keep interest for many ages and stages.
I can still order the toys but I haven't actively done a party for a long time, I just order for friends and family as needed!

My kids and I all love Wedgits (I believe that is the correct spelling). You can find them online or at educational stores. I would recommend starting with at least a full set as opposed to the Jr. Set.

I just got my daughter a personalized book from Baby Grand in St. Paul called My Very Own Name Book for her first birthday. The animals in the book spell out her name. I got my older daughter the book My Very Own Fairy Tale for her 1st birthday. She is 4 now and she loves reading it. You can have a personalized message in the front of the book as well so he knows you gave it to him for his 1st birthday. You can also order online at www.iseeme.com. They are wonderful books!

When my baby turned one he really loved the Fischer-Price children's laptop. The age range was a little old for him, but he just loved it! It was his favorite toy for the longest time.

My son is also turning one this month. I bought him a decorative airplane mobile to hang from the ceiling. It is something that he will enjoy for many years and he may want to keep if he has a son of his own someday. Since he has an older sister we were also already drowning in kid toys so I like to try and find something that is a little more sentimental for the first birthday/Christmas.

Its available at asimplertime.com

I have a favorite book on childhood developent and I think at age one the author recommended puzzles, balls, mirrors, and one more type toy where you have to push the shape through the matching hole. Does that make sense? It's like 4 shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle) that are 3 dimensional and they have to figure out which one fits to push the object thru.

Other than that, you probably have everything and know everything being this is your 3rd! :) Bubbles are great, water is great... sand, playdough. But, I'm a huge advocate for early brain development by reading. If he is the 3rd boy, probaly a lot of your books are looking pretty used. I'd invest in some age appropriate books (peek a boo style, lift the flap, pop up, touch and feel, etc) He will still like reading the 'easy' books when he is older for a break.

Hope this helps! Blessings to you,
Amanda

Get him some great board books -- he will enjoy them for at least three more years. Some recommendations:

The Maisy books by Lucy Cousins
The Max and Ruby books by Rosemary Wells
Owl Babies, Martin Waddell
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle
The Very Busy Spider, Eric Carle
The Very Lonely Firefly, Eric Carle
The Pigeon Loves Things That Go!, Mo Willems
Hug, Jez Alborough
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Bill Martin, Jr.
I Went Walking, Sue Williams
Goodnight, Gorilla, Peggy Rathmann

I'm a preschool teacher, and used to teach kindergarten. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to instill a love of books in your children. Teachers can always tell who gets read to daily at home -- and who doesn't.

If you aren't already making books a part of your daily routine, stock up on some great books and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Not sure how much you want to spend. I'm very excited to buy my son a learning tower. It is also called a kitchen helper. Look them up on google. They are a bit expensive, but sturdy, useful, and can last a very long time!

Happy Birthday, little one!

R.,

I got my daughter the "Tuggy Tugboat" made by Parents for the bathtub when she turned one. Target sells it for about $18. It was such a big hit at our house, my 5 year old (now 6) went back to taking baths instead of showers in order to play with it. A year later, it is still played with every time my kids get in the tub.

I would do something like a family membership to the zoo or children's museum. Fun for everyone, lasts all year, and no more "stuff" in your house!
