Looking for Early On/Smart Start Experiences for 2 Year Old

My 4 year old is in the Smart Start program for speech. I wasn't completely thrilled with his teacher or the program this year. My 2 year old is also speech delayed and at the recommendation of our pediatrician I filled out a referral for Early On. I haven't gotten any farther than that. Long story short her vocab is limited to about 50 words and she isn't using sentences. She knows no body parts, colors, shapes, etc. even though we work with her on a daily basis. I was wondering if she gets accepted if the program is different for 2 year olds than it is for the 3's and 4's? Anyone had any experience with it for this age? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi M., my son started the Early On program when he was 1 years old. He is only 3 and I absolutely love the program!!! When we first started he only went 2-3 days a week. I accompanied him to school on the day(s) that he went and the other day the teacher can to my home. They did it this way so he is familiar with them at school as well as where he is most comfortable at. The transition was amazing also. They came to my home at the end and beginning of the school year so that he could familiarize himself with them again. He turned 3 in Nov. and he already knows all of his colors, numbers, alphabet, body parts and a host of other things. We are in Farmington Hills and he attends Alameda Early Childhood Center. I would highly recommend it to you if you can place your child in a school out of his/her district. Please dont hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns.

Hi,
Don't know the specifics of that program, it seems others do, so that should give you some idea about your services.
A couple of things, have you had your childs hearing tested? That's where you should start with delayed speech to rule out any hearing problems. My 28 month old was not talking a lot at 2,at 18 months she was delayed she needed tubes which have helped a lot. I did have Early on come in and evaluate and work with her, ultimately we were evaluated by the schol district. I liked the Early On worker she was very nice. Also some kids are late talkers, keep that in mind, not all children talk at 18 months, but they should be evaluated to determine what's going on, and if they need services.
Hope that helps.
L.
P.S. My child is talking non stop now.,

Do you have private insurance that will pay for an occupational therapy eval and speech eval + private speech and occupational therapy? Kaufman Center in West Bloomfield is good, Abilities Center in Walled Lake, Lepak and Associates in Commerce.

Where in the south? I'm from the south! ;)

YES! The 2 year old program is different than for 3's and 4's. I believe that the Northville Public Schools contract with Westland for their 0-3 services. If this is still the case, than your child would be receiving services at Stottlemyer Elementary. Their program (if your child qualifies) includes a weekly home visit from a teacher and weekly school-based session. The teacher works on speech and there is a speech pathologist available at the school on school days. (A speech pathologist is not available to work one on one with your child until your child is 3 years of age.) Your child would also be evaluated to assess whether or not PT or OT would also be a service. Having said that, just like in any school, there are some phenomenal teachers and then there are others who are not so good. I have been working with this program from the time that my children were 1 year old, and they were just discharged from services at the age of 3. I have had some wonderful teachers, but our last one was not so great. If you want more information, please feel free to contact me. Best wishes!
