Looking for a Piano Teacher for My 6-Year Old

Hi,
My daughter, who's 6-1/2 and will be entering 1st grade in the Fall, is dying to learn the piano. Can anyone recommend a piano teacher who teaches classical piano and has experience teaching 6-year olds? I've found a wonderful teacher, but she is very hesitant about teaching anyone under age 8 because she thinks that introducing the piano "language" while the child is beginning to learn reading, writing, and math is too confusing/overwhelming for the child. However, I know that kids that age and younger can do just fine, so wanted to send out some feelers for another great piano teacher.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

We decided to go with Diane Shephard. She offers group lessons and reduced stress recitals (group recitals with the option of solos)! Her piano studio is also closeby, and she offers a week long piano camp during th summer. The camp will be a great way to introduce my daughter to piano and help us determine if she really wants to learn piano for the long term. Thanks for the recommendation, Michelle T.!

Our granddaughter has been taking piano since Kindergarten and is now in third grade. She goes once a week but you can go more often if you want too. The place is called Hovland Conservatory the number is ###-###-####. They have teachers in Chandler, Gilbert, Paradise Valley and Phoenix. They may teach in every town in the valley by now. They have a piano recital in May. We've went to every piano recital and its exciting to see the young children play seeing how far they've all come. Our granddaughter is very excited as this year she is playing a piece by Beethovan. NP

I would suggest looking into a music program called Let's Play Music (www.letsplaymusicsite.com). It is a 3 year program that introduces music in a very fun way. They are learning all of the theory through songs. My daughter is 6 and just finished the program but she eas one of the youngest in her class. I actually wished I would have waited longer so your daughter is the perfect age for this. By the 3rd year they can play the piano in several different keys and they even write their own recital piece. It is a wonderful rogram. Good luck!

Hi,
I have a "great" one! However, she is in Mesa and teaches out of her home.

My friend takes both of her girls and I am just starting this week with my two. My son is just turned 6 and she had no problem with it in fact she had suggested it if I wanted to. My son had been tinkering on our piano for awhile as well as my daughter so I was glad that she said it was OK to start him also.

I met her at a party my girlfriend had and my daughter happened to be there. I really liked her as well as my daughter who she ended up playing the piano with. I wanted her to give her an evaluation so to speak because my daughter is truly "gifted". But of course, I know a lot of Moms feel that way. However, my daughter had taught herself a few songs and melodies so I asked her if she would like to meet her etc...... It was a match and she confirmed my daughter was "gifted" to be able to play by ear.

She does 30 min. of teaching and 30 min. of theory on some sort of fun computer program that she says all kids love. It sounded great to me because I want my kids to learn all aspects of music. She even recently acquired a program when they are more advanced to be able to write their own music.

Anyway, hopefully she will work for you too and us. So although the lessons have not started yet for us I have met her and talked several times on the phone with her and my friend is definitely happy with her for her girls. E-mail me directly and I will be happy to give you her name and number.
