Long Period - Pflugerville,TX

Sorry if my question is a little graphic but here goes. I've gotten my period this month 10 days early. Normally it lasts about 4 days and is not heavy at all. This month, it is still here 7 days later and still very heavy. That's not "normal" for me. We have been trying to get pregnant so I'm kind of thinking it may have been a very early miscarriage. Does anyone else think it may be? Do you think I should see a gyn.? Or should I wait another few days or week to see if it hopefully stops soon? Thank you all for your advice and opinions.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. I am just about 38 so maybe my body is changing. I'm going to make an appt. with my gyn. for the end of this week just to make sure it's nothing serious. Thanks again to all of you.

Unfortunately, you certainly could be experiencing an early miscarriage--and there isn't anything to be done at this point. If your bleeding lasts longer than two weeks or gets exceptionally heavy (more than one tampon or pad per hour) you should see a care provider immediately. A complication of miscarriage can be "retained products of conception" but it sounds like you are passing everything as expected. If you develop any fever or your discharge becomes foul smelling, you should also seek medical attention.

A very early miscarriage usually won't require a D&C, but every doctor is different in their opinion and every situation varies. I've passed two miscarriages at home without any intervention. My midwife recommended a couple of weeks of pelvic rest following my miscarriages before resuming "relations"--basically wait until you get your period again in 4-6 weeks.

Good luck with your future pregnancy.

There could be any of several reasons for an extra long and heavy period. Yes, you should go see your Gyn just to rule out anything that needs treatment.

My first question is how old are you? Mine started to change after I turned 35. One month would be really heavy and I would need a pad back up and the next month would be barely a trickle.

You could be right that it was an early miscarriage. It may not hurt to see your Dr, as it could also be endometriosis. Or your hormones could be out of whack.

Good Luck!

Well, I've had miscarriages very early where I bled especially heavy for about 5 days. But it seems you wouldn't have been as far along (depending on when you ovulated.) I do think you should call the dr.

I wouldn't do a D&C, though, unless it becomes necessary. There are other things you can do (like the herbal remedy 5 W) that can help clean everything out. D&C can puncture your uterus and you should probably postpone your baby making plans for 6 months or so following one.

I'm sorry, I hope you get better quickly.

My normal period is the same as yours. A few yrs ago I had a really heavy one and I was clotting. Because this is so abnormal for me, I called my doc. He told me to go buy a pregnancy tests even though I had surgery 7 yrs earlier to not have any more babies. To my amazement, it was positive! Apparently my tubes had grown back together on both sides! Sadly, it was a tubal pregnancy. My advice to you would be to either go buy a pregnancy test first, then call your doc or just call your doc first anytime something is abnormal for you. Good luck and God Bless!

It wouldn't hurt to see you O.B. sometimes that is a sign of a cist on the ovaries... hopefully not, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

I don't know how old you are, but as we age, especially after 35 our periods do change. 7 days would not be a huge red alert even if it is not normal for you. If it doesn't stop, then yes it is an alert. It could easily be an early miscarriage. This happened to my mother. If it is, there is no reason to go to the doctor that I am aware of. They won't do anything for you as your body has already taken care of it naturally. If extreme pain is involved or it doesn't stop, then definitely go to your doctor. Otherwise, make notes and mention it to him at your next appt.

looks like your last baby is 15 months. have you been having normal periods since then? well once they came back. if it last for longer i would definatly call the doctor and tell them they have always been____ and now its _____. they can answer your questions and if they want to check on you they will. but if you think it could be a miscarriage you really need to find out and let them know it might be. they can examine you and do what needs to be done.

If by Tuesday this is still going on, I would suggest you see the doctor. Yes, could be early miscarriage, but could be something else. Be sure to drink orange juice and stay away from caffeine till you find out. You do not want to become anemic.

I also had a similar problem and it turned out to be ovarian cysts. Call the gyn and make an appointment.
