Long Beach Schools

How hard is it to get a transfer these days? The neighborhood schools aren't very good, but there are schools within a few miles that are much better. We have considered moving, but if we thought we could get a transfer, we would probably stay where we are. It's not a bad neighborhood, but for some reason the schools aren't very good. I'd rather not send the kids to a private school, but would as a last resort. I've heard that because enrollment is down, it's not as hard to get a transfer as it used to be, but it makes me a bit nervous counting on that without any guarantee. The schools we would be happy with are Newcomb, Cubberley, Gant or Twain. My mom lives near Twain, but I don't think there's a legitimate way for us to use her address to enroll the kids in that school. We live near Rossmoor, but I'm not sure how hard it is to get a transfer to another school district. Any advice or experience that might be helpful is appreciated!

What can I do next?

It isn't hard. Just paperwork.

I live in the Cubberly district - but we're going to use Weaver Elementary in Rossmore. It is one of the best elementary schools in California.

It is harder to get released from LB than to be accepted by another school. So, doing an inter-district transfer (to Newcomb, Cubberly, Gant or Twain) is easier than leaving the district, but Los Al district needs kids so they will likely take you. Also - consider this - the LB high schools are really bad, and if you want your child to go to Los Al high, which is MUCH better, they cannot feed in from middle school - they have to be in a Los Al middle school to go there. So, think ahead, if you want Los Al high, you need to be in Oak or McAullife middle, so you might as well do a Los Al elementary school too.

That's my two cents.

I don't know about Long Beach. We live in Anaheim, but my kids have been on a transfer both inter district and intra-district for the last 3 school years. Once you get approved, its a good bet you'll be approved the next year and so on.
My reason for the intra-district is that my babysitter doesn't pick up from the school they are district assigned.
In regards to using your Mother's address, you just put it on the form as where they live. As long as you can get mail from her (report cards, etc) you do not have to live there. Just work on the don't ask don't tell policy. I know lots of parents who do this.
:)
Good Luck.

Hello,
It's not really hard, but you have to do your homework and be patient. The long beach school district every January, has an open workshop where you can check out the schools in the district. It is easier to get a permit within the district than it is going outside the district. Look on the lbusd website and you can see what the different schools have to offer in terms of what you are looking for your child's education. They have excellent programs for gifted, etc kids.
Check out the website and also the website of the other school districts and then compare and see if what school district has what you are looking for in terms of education for your kids.
I hope this helps.
Take care and God bless!

Hi D.,
I live in El Dorado Park Estates, so Newcomb is my local school. I don't know how hard it is to transfer in to Newcomb, but my sitter (who lives in Bellflower) asked me to write a letter to try to get her daughter in at Bankcroft, and she didn't get in. They were full.

I really like our neighborhood, and I see all the neighborhood kids walking to school every morning. I don't know any children in our neighborhood who go to a private school; they all go to Newcomb. Our neighbors across the street are going to put their house up for sale soon (3 bedroom 2 bath), so I'd recommend looking at houses in El Dorado Park Estates if you end up deciding to move.
