Local Tours for Kids/families

I'm looking for places to take a tour with my kids, preferably north of DFW. We've been to the Federal Reserve in Ft. Worth (where they make money) and Mrs. Baird's. We've also been to Fire and Police stations. What I'm looking for now is more local businesses... pizzerias, bakeries, stores, factories, etc. I'm in Flower Mound, so would prefer something in Lewisville, Grapevine, Southlake, Lake Dallas, Carrollton, Coppell, The Colony, etc.). Thanks!

Many people don't know it but there's a viewing spot called Founders Plaza at the DFW airport. It's fenced in and has a few picnic tables and is right next to one of the less active runways. From there, you can watch the planes take off and land. If one happens to be going out on the runway closest to you (again, not used very often), you are close enough to wave to the pilot and he will usually wave back. My boys LOVED it when they were small. Just take the feeder road that runs next to the paid road and look for small signs that say Founders Plaza.

There is a farmer's branch historic park, my daughter's 1st grade class went last year for a field trip, it is very picturesque. They still have the log homes from the 1st family who moved to Dallas way back when.

Peterbilt in Denton is an incredible facility. You could also do a regional airport like the one in Denton, Alliance, etc.

I know this is further than you are looking..although maybe this will be part of my ploy to encourage familyeguide a little northward..hehe..but I have been told that Celebrity Bakery in Denton will do tours. I am not sure what the parameters are, but I know someone who took their family! If I think if anything else, I will let you know for sure! ~A.~

This was a really cool place we checked out recently:

www.burbmom.net/northwest-regional-airport-blue-hangar-cafe/

We didn't do a tour like this other lady did, just met some friends for lunch, but it was fun. We enjoyed dining outside and seeing the planes land right before our eyes. I'm sure arranging a tour wouldn't be too hard as the hangar manager sounds nice.

California Pizza Kitchen gives tours. I believe the minimum age is 8, but you can call the Grapevine location to check.

Our Denton MOMS Club group has taken tours of Cici's Pizza, Cold Stone Creamery, Beth Marie's Ice Cream, Candy Haven & Kolache Haven Bakery, the local post office, etc. Costco in Lewisville gave us and the kids a great tour, even treated us to pizza from their deli and the kids got to decorate treats from their bakery in the employee dining area. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory will demonstrate how they make their marble slab fudge if you call to set up a time. Family eGuide is an awesome resource, as well. The Bison LLELA area sounds neat for a nature tour. www.ias.unt.edu/llela The Fort Worth Nature Center also offers some outdoor tours, including bison feeding hayrides. http://www.fwnaturecenter.org. Supermarkets will also give tours. We toured a new Kroger Signature store in south Denton, which the kids loved because they were given free samples at the deli, bakery, etc. Market Street does a nice job with their tours, too, from what I understand. I'll bet Central Market in Southlake would, as well. It's been years, but the Fort Worth Star-Telegram was a neat tour for my fifth-grade class. It was very cool watching the papers being printed before our eyes.

You can tour the Mary Kay corporate building in Addison as well as the manufacturing building down in Dallas off of 35 and Regal Row.

I know Whole Foods Grocery stores do tours. You might also call Central Market in Southlake. I imagine you could call any store or restaurant and they would set something up for you and your kids Good Luck. Sounds like you are such a fun mom! Happy Holidays!
