Little Gifts to Help Husband Quit Smoking

My husband has set the goal to quit smoking in January (YAY!!!). I just thought of the idea for me to give him a gift bag for Christmas of a few small things to help him cope with quitting. Here are some things I have thought of:

A stress ball
Gum
Hard candy such as Jolly Ranchers & Werther's

What are some other things to help him curb the cravings? He does plan to exercise a lot to help with stress, but he is also starting back to college. So, he needs things he can have with him in class as well!

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

He has tried a couple electronic cigarettes, but he doesn't stick to them. Now he just wants to quit completely. Oh and he has tried Chantix before, and patches, but doesn't like the side effects.

I asked my husband what he would want for Christmas if he could pick anything, and, well... let's just say his answer made me blush, and I'm glad the kids weren't around to hear it! How about some coupons to do "his favorite things" (whatever that might be!) for 1 day without smoking, 10 days without smoking, 2 weeks, etc. Men are pretty easily motivated sometimes! ;)

Rubber bands to wear on wrists to snap himself when he gets the urge to smoke. Something like a pencil or the shape of it hold like a cigarette or put in his mouth. Brush teeth when he gets the urge. . Peppermint. The nicotine gum helps tremendously. Good luck to him. Oh and books to read with reminders of why you should stop.

As a former smoker myself (and my hubby) I would not recommend candy. Gum is fine and a stress ball too. I used the Nicorette gum and I can say it helped a lot. My hubby used the patch and that worked for him. Your hubby needs to redirect his brain and do something different when he wants to smoke. The patches and gum will be great help at first to get off the nicotine, I don't recommend cold turkey.
After the first two weeks it gets easier. Being a positive support is the best thing.

Edit: I only used the Nicorette gum when I had a craving. I did not go by the package instructions. I was off all nicotine in less than two weeks. But he really needs to want to quit for anything to work.

Patches?

I had a friend who did somehting similar. She wrapped up gifts for her boyfriend, each one marked with a date - a few days, a week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks of being smoke free. I think his big present was a massage.

Don't let your husband hesitate to contact his doctor. I think they can help. Good for him!!

The electronic cigarette ROCKS. Well worth the $$!!

Just be supportive. He's going to have cranky days. If he can afford to, get him to go to his doc for a prescription for Chanitx.

Good luck to you BOTH!! :)

licorice, I've heard from smokers who quit that something to replace the holding of the cigarette in hand/mouth was helpful. Good for your husband for planning his quitting and you for supporting him. Hope he enjoys school.

The patch works great. It helped my dad quit a few years ago, the gum works too but most teachers don't like gum in class. I have a friend who uses the smokeless thing it seems to help him. Good luck I know it is hard to quit but it can be done, my dad smoked for 30 years and now is smoke free going on 5 years so it can be done.

Good luck,
T.

Nicorette gum. Then something to occupy his hands, like a hand held game that was mentioned by another poster.

A little hand-held electronic game (like poker or something) or game apps for his phone. He needs to redirect his mind when he has a craving, in addition to keeping his hands and mouth busy.

A guy in school used to soak toothpicks in flavored oils (mint, cinnamon) and chew on those - those could be handy for your husband.
