Lasik Eye Surgery

I will be having Lasik eye surgery in about a month. My question is, the practice offers two options I can choose from. One comes with free enhancements for a year, and the other is free enhancements for life. Has anyone had this surgery done and had to get enhancements? If so, how long after the surgery and how often? Thanks for your input!

What can I do next?

Hi,
I had this surgery almost 3 years ago. LOVE my result. I never had a revision, though I don't have perfect 20 20 vision..Very close though like 15 20 or something. I elected not to have a revision after speaking with my doctor. I was nearsighted before and I wanted PERFECT vision. Right now I don't need galsses for anything, and because I opted to not try to obtain perfect 20 20 vision through a revision, My doctor said it will delay my need for reading glasses someday. I was fine with that. I had my surgery at the Eye and Ear Institute. They were excellent. Expensive, but the best in the area and they told me they often end up attempting to correct less expensive surgeries done out at smaller places in the community. Also, my doc specifically said that your vision won't change very much at all after the first year of lasik, so I would be leary of the lifetime plan if it is more expensive...you may never need it. Best of luck.

I never had lasik eye surgery but i am going to school to be a optician-the person who adjusts your glasses and troubleshoots any problems with your prescription. i just took anatomy of the eye last semester and saw the surgery done on a video tape we watched in class. i would say is there a cost difference between the two? sometimes the eyes change or their may be an issue with the surgery. it works 85% of the time but some people have issues. i would say to do the free enhancements for life,if you can afford it. remember sometimes you may still need reading glasses later on even if they correct your distance.

I had lasik eye surgery a year ago in December. I couldn't be happier. My only regret is that I hadn't done it sooner. I would compare the cost for the free enhancements for life vs. a year. I think I had free enhancements for a year - none were needed to date. I still have 20/20 vision and love the freedom from contacts/glasses.

Hi B.,

I had Lasik Surgery done at Kremer in Cherry Hill 4 yrs ago and I still have 20/20 vision. My boss had his done 7 yrs ago,at Wills Eye in Philadelphia, is over 50 and still has 20/20 vision. I think if you are getting it done by the right people you should not need enhancements done. Hope this helped.

Its better to get the inhancements for life. Your eyes will change over time, as they will tell you at your consult. Its better to have free for life then free for a year.

I had Lasik in 2007 and love it !! I went to TLC where you never "pay" more for lifetime enhancements, they are included in the price. I personally believe that you shouldn't have to "pay" extra for that service. You will not need the enhancement in the first year but you never know after that. I would shop around for an all inclusive Lasik surgery so you never have to worry about your vision in the future. Good luck... the surgery is worth every penny... the freedom is great.

I had Lasik surgery about 7 years ago and chose the option for the lifetime of free enhancements. I haven't had to have an enhancement yet but think I am getting close. Since I don't know your age...I have been told that your eyes will change and the need for bi-focals or "cheaters" may be necessary. It is what happened to me. After having the surgery and then turning 40 - 41, my near sightedness was almost nil! Frustrating but I was happy to see when driving, watching movies, etc. I am going to my eye doctor for my routine visit and will ask if I can have an enhancement as I am noticing my far sightedness is not as good as when the surgery was first done. I hope this helps a little. The surgery was painless and I would do it again in a minute! Good luck to you!

I had Lasik surgery done 10 years ago. I had a very high stigmatism. (3.25) I needed a correction 2 months later. If you have a high stigmatism you want to get life. All my friends who do not have any or small stigmatism still have 20/20 and it's been anywhere from 10 to 15 years. I now after 2 children I need glasses again because my stigmatism are back .75. I wish they offered life to me. Good luck you will love it.

I had lasik done in 2004 and LOVE it and my vision is still 20/20. I can't imagine you'll need any enhancements in the first year but don't know about lifetime. I'm sure there will be a point when you would need an enhancement. I would find out the details of the type of enhancement offered. (eg. if you start to become far-sighted does it include this? Because if you're eyes have stopped changing like mine I doubt they'll become more near-sighted).

Hi B.,
I had the surgery done over 2 years ago and love it. I am still seeing perfect with no enhancements needed. I had my surgery done at Kremer in Cherry Hill and they were excellent. I did not buy either enhancement package and so far have not needed any. I guess it would be a financial decision along with what you are comfortable with.
Good luck & I am sure you will love the results.

My mom and I were just talking about this. She had the surgery ten years ago. She did have to have some enhancements done in the first year, just to adjust. She could see fine(she was basically blind before the surgery) for many years, but now her eyes are starting to get bad again. She won't go through it again, so also tink about whether you would want to do it again. And also think about the cost of the lifetime option. This surgery gets cheaper every year, and if your insurance covers some of it, you may not need the lifetime option.

Sorry for the big babble of a paragraph, hope it helped.

I had LASIK in 2003 so everything I say is my understanding from all the research I did at that time.

I originally went for the surgery in February 2003. They cut the flap too small on the first eye and had to put it back down and let it heal for three months before they tried again. During this time I was charged nothing and given a new pair of glasses for free since I would have to wear glasses (no contacts) for the entire healing period. There was no pain or complications...it was as if that eye had been operated on but I still couldn't see better out of it.

In May the surgery went great and I could see the next day without glasses. I never had to have an enhancement done but I did talk to a few people there for that purpose. I was told by the practice that any enhancements to get me up to 20/20 would be free, but after that my eyes would likely not revert until old age when the degeneration of eyesight is different. In other words, you might need some initial adjustments to get you to 20/20, BUT once you're there, as long as you're at least in your 20's you will likely be able to see just fine until you start to need reading glasses in old age.

Old Age far sightedness cannot be cured by LASIK because it results from a complete reshaping of your eye itself (as opposed to just the lense), so even a LASIK "enhancement" will not help you. Problems with eyesight due to old age sets in at different ages depending on genetics. Some people get LASIK anyway because it keeps them from having to wear bifocals even though they will still need the reading glasses.

I STILL have at least 20/20 eye sight and haven't been to an eye doctor since my follow up visits in 2003. Honestly I haven't been to many LASIK places, but the "adjustments for life" deal sounds like the extra insurance on car rentals. You MIGHT use it, but in all likelyhood you will get everything fixed in the first few months, and once you do start to have bad eyesight again due to old age, LASIK won't help anyway. I would ask for a copy of BOTH contracts and read the fine print on both before you decide anything. My guess is that neither wil garuntee perfect eyesight...since LASIK can't fix many sight problems...and if you're only going to be getting "touch ups" you need to question whether you want to have surgery done with a doctor who can't get it right within a year (or who tries to sell you insurance you likely won't need).

Good luck!

I had it @ 4 yrs ago. I am very happy with the results except for 1 thing. I am dry and have to use drops in the night and morning. I did not get the enhancement package because they advised me that if changes are going to occur, it usually happens in the first year and I was covered for that. One thing is that I have lost my short vision in the left eye and could use some readers when I get tired. Not sure if that is because of age, though. My husband also had it, did not need any enhancements, either. Good luck

I had lasik in '01. I had a pretty bad stigmatism and got to 20/15 in both eyes with the surgery. Now my eyesight, as of summer '08, is 20/40. I haven't had to have enhancements yet, but I figure if it's already degrading and I'm only 34, I have a long way to go before it'll be poor eyesight due to age. I have the lifetime enhancements included. I guess I would say depending on what age you are and how bad your eyesight is would help determine that.

Dear B.,

I had Lasiks as well as my 2 sisters and brother. Except for my sister who had minor complications, none of us needed enhancements within the first year. I believe if you need an enhancement within the first year, the doctor messed-up and should do it without charge anyway. I am now in my 7th year post-Lasiks and I could probably use an enhancement. I find myself squinting a bunch of times during the day. If I had had this option at the time of my surgery, I would have chosen a lifetime of enhancements.

Good luck! It is a surgery I wished I had had done way sooner than I did. There is not a day that goes by that i am not thankful that I had this surgery, felt it was worth every penny spent, and tell anyone considering it to GET IT DONE!

It will change your life! I've worn glasses since I was 10. The next day when I woke up post Lasiks I began reading book titles out loud to my husband from the bookshelf at the bottom of our bed.

You'll love it.
