P.K.
Will they do it for 50 lbs.? For some it is a life saver for others does not
work well. Have friends that have had it done. For one she was always
sick after eating, so it was reversed. For two others worked great.
Hi,
Has anyone had lap band surgery? What has your experience been? How is your energy level? How is the eating after? Would you do it again? Anyone have this done in the Denver area that you could recommend?
I am approx 50lbs over weight.
Thanks for sharing!

My brother had it done. It worked for him after about 5 years..he keeps having to go get adjustments done so he doesnt eat..however he has not changed his eating habits...without the lap band he would be really big again...his biggest beef is he pukes alot because (since he didnt change his eating habits) he overeats and it somehow forces you to throw up after eating..he has had to some dental issues because of that too...
Oh goodness...I just read you are only 50lb overweight. I DO NOT recommend this for you....diet and exercise will get you to the same place at the same time...lap band will not makeyou lose 50lb in a month...probably will take 4 to 5 months from the day you have the surgery...you can get down 50lbs with diet and exersize in that amt of time.
I am a personal trainer and unless your life is in danger, I cannot recommend it. I had a client last fall whose life is in danger. She had it done, but wasn't emotionally prepared and actually has gained weight. A person can still overeat and stretch out the band. I know several O. people who had it done and lost weight, but over time they gained it back.
I don't think they will do it for someone to lose 50 lbs.
A better choice is to read Brad Lamm's book, Just 10 lbs. He also has a useful website.
Lap band isn't for you. You don't weigh enough to warrant the surgery. My husband had gastric by-pass and BARELY made the weight requirement but the diabetes was destroying his vision and the doctor and insurance company approved him.
He is a MODEL patient. He follows the diet, exercise plan and takes all his vitamins, keeps his appointments and has gotten a second chance.
He has a LOT more energy now that he's off the SEVEN medications ($550.00 a MONTH worth) and looks like his old self--happy and HEALTHY!
He eats a LOT less and doesn't miss anything but steak. He doesn't even miss Diet Coke!
I've lost 45 pounds since last summer. It takes longer but the feeling of being healthy and being around longer (hopefully) for my son tastes better than that chocolate piece of cake.
Cut out soda and drink yourself silly on water. Just THAT alone will help things going in a positive direction.
Good luck.
50lbs isn't much. Please don't try to take the easy way out that will alter your life and possibly threaten it. Putting weight on takes time and so does loosing it. Exercise and eat right. If you don't know how to eat right then visit a nutritionist who can teach you. You are much better off that way. Good luck.
last month I heard of a former co-worker (age 35 I think) who is now in a coma went into cardiac arrest while undergoing lap band surgery. Aren't there O. ways? I realize there are chronic health conditions that someone chooses a treatment option such as this, and that she may be that one in a million who has an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. My point is she had no way of knowing this going into surgery. All the best in your decision.
My MIL and her sister flew to Mexico and had it done for $8000. Insurance companies normally have many clauses to prevent them from paying for it so check into that first. They did really well on it. The first month or 2 there energy level seemed low. You have to follow the diet rules of what you can eat otherwise you will have pain and complications. I think my mil lost 60lbs and her sister lost 100. Afterwards they both needed plastic surgery/ full body lifts due to losing so much so fast. If your eating habits are mental it normally isn't good to get done. All it does is make you not hungry but if your mind says I want cake and you eat cake then this will cause a problem and you won't lose weight. If your the type that only eats when your hungry then it could be beneficial. Although there are probably cheaper routes for you to go. I went to my family dr last year and got 3 months supply of phentermine and changed my eating habits. In about 5-6 months I lost 55lbs. The cost was $75 in co pays and $60 in meds. Its been a year and i have kept the weight off with no problems.
I have read that it's for patients who are at least 100 lbs overweight, or have a 40+ BMI with health related issues.
I know this doesn't answer your questions, but 50 lbs is just not that bad.
:)
Dr. Oz talked about this last night on his show. Go to his website and see if you can watch it. The two ladies that had it done said they would of course do it again. The amount of food they are able to eat after is next to nothing, be prepeared. One lady was literally eating 1/2 cup of yogurt for lunch and if she ate much more she would throw up.
