Labor Induction

Hello everyone! I'm am scheduled to be induced on the 8th of October and I was originally due on the 18th so I will be delivering about a week and a half early. I arranged it this way so that it would be easier to make arrangements for my children and for the father to be there (his work schedule is crazy). I was induced with my first daughter and she was healthy and it wasn't too bad but I've recently read online some risks there are to having an induction without it being medically necessary. I was just wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences with induction? My pregnancy has been healthy and I believe my due date is pretty accurate so the baby will not be premature. I can cancel the induction at any time so I would just like some feedback on if I should go through with it or just let things happen naturally. Thanks!

What can I do next?

three of my four babies were inductions. they are 6, 4, 3 and 10 months. so these were using recent medical options. i did not have any problems at all! and by the time i had two to three kids i really needed to have a time frame so i had someone that could watch the kids.

i had two inductions at a hospital in knoxville, tn. they had the pain medication started before the petocin (sp?) had started any contractions. about four hours later i told the nurse i was ready and two pushes and out came baby!

my last induction was here in columbia and my biggest complant was that awful pain medication they gave as the contractions started to get really bad. it did not do anything for the pain and it made me feel loopy so i had a hard time with the breathing and sitting to control the pain. i also did not like they waited until i was in full contractions to put in the epidural (sp?). they are sticking something in my spine while i am contracting and saying don't move! they told me i had to wait for it since some inductions don't work and would not consider that i had already had two successful inductions at another hospital.
sorry that was so long!!
:) jenny
if you don't mind, tell me how it goes and which hospital you use. i have another one on the way!

I was induced with my second child and the only bad side effect was the contractions were much much stronger and hurt very bad. I had an epidural put in place earlier than I would have liked. I like my epidural put in when I am 8 cc dialated.
Other than that everything was good.

I have not been induced myself, but I would have serious reservations about doing it unless I was 2 weeks overdue or the baby was in distress. Typically, the body will not begin labor until the baby is ready to come out - the baby's lungs secrete a hormone which tells the body "i'm ready - send me out!". If you induce labor, the baby may not be ready to enter the world and breathe and eat on it's own.
Sometimes things are fine with an induced labor, but you are definitely increasing your risk of problems. You just need to weigh the costs with the benefits and decide what you feel comfortable with. Here is a good article I found that is very straightforward and just presents the results of a study conducted - http://www.expectantmothersguide.com/library/pittsburgh/E...

I was induced with my first child but only because she was 2 weeks late...my doctor would not induce any earlier because of possible problems...I would think long and hard about it, when it's time for the little one to make his enterence into this world he will...my daughter was born healthy and is 10 now...I did have complications after the delivery, my blood pressure was through the roof and with my second child who came on her own, I had no problems at all

I would absolutely advise against it unless really necessary - I was induced and it led to all sorts of other interventions. The labor was also miserable - very fast contractions and an epidural I hadn't wanted that slowed the labor even further. If you have to, you'll live through it but I don't recommend it! good luck.

I have been induced with both my boys. My first was born on March 17th 2003 (st.patricks days). He was due on march 24th (my wedding date) so we were really shooting for him to be born on that day...but 2 weeks before my due date I was at an appointment and had high blood pressure and my doctor just came in and said (Here's the date your being induced. And walked out.Granted we were glad but reasons like that were why I found a different doctor,he never explained anything. And I had no idea it was even st patricks day until someone mentioned it after he was born, during that deliever the heart beat was dropping with every push so my doctor gave me 1 last push and warned everyone in the room to get ready to leave so that I could be sedated and rushed to OR.I didnt want to be asleep on my childs birth so I pushed so hard and for so long and that 1 push that I passed out from loss of air and threw up immediately after giving birth. That nurse was lightening fast with the bed pan! With my second I was also induced but on my due date July 7th 2006.I dont think this baby was going to come early or on time.My doctor tried to strip my membranes and all that to start labor..even tried the castor oil.But other than the baby getting pnemonia from my strep B nothing happen as a result of the induction...other than the contractions hurting alot more and come on faster than they normally would.Dont worry, your doctor wouldnt induce if they were concerned it being a problem...not a good one anyway. With my first my son did have jaundice..and that was a little heart wrenching to have to give birth and then him have the patches over his eyes for a week.I was so drained that my aunt came to the hospital to spend 1 night with him so i could rest at home. And it hurt when the patch would fall off and i wouls see his pretty blue eyes and hes try to see me and then the nurse would put the patch right back on and hed cry. When my aunt came, I made it to the exit and I burst into tears with guilt.I felt like I was leaving him and I thought he might reconize the different smell and voice and know I wasnt there.Dpending on when ur child is due.I would make sure that it is as close to the due date as possible.Jaundice isnt really a high risk thing anymore...but it is def hard on the mother...especially since u have other children and wont be able to stay.

I had 3 children and all of them were induced. Only one was medically necessary and I had no problems. All 3 were born exactly 6 hours after they started the pitocin! The first was 4 days early the 2nd was 12 days early and the last one was 3 days late. The only problem I had with the one that was 12 days early was he was a little jaundiced and that can happen when they are early but nothing a little sunlight can't take care of!
Good luck!

I am a strong believer in letting nature take it's course. Your child will come when he/she is ready-taking him/her early is a risk you shouldn't take. My daughter was born just a few weeks early, and her liver wasn't strong enough and she had to stay under the bili lights for a few days....

I was induced with all my pregnancies, My kids are 6,4,3,2 and 3 mths. My babies were known to be big and all of them went smoothly but my last daughter. Cord was wrapped around her neck and elbow but that had nothing to do about being induced early and she was lucky it could have been worse if we had waited. The whole let nature take its course thing could be bad, my Nana had my aunt 1 mth late in 1968 and she now has a growth problem which stunts her growth. She was born 10lbs and it was an agonizing labor for both of them. If a Dr says your ok and you feel ok with it...go ahead. We have all our own instincts and know what our bodies and babies can usually handle. Best of Luck :)

Hi T.. I have been induced twice. My first and second pregnancies. My first was born on March 28 and was due on April5. My daughter was induced the day after she was due. Both inductions were un-problematic. I realize the risks that are involved, but I also did a lot of reasearch myself. The risk occurances decreased with every report that I found. As long as the US looks good and the baby is at weight and the lungs appear mature, I would go with the induction. I am not sure if you are still seeing the same Dr that delivered your other children, but if so, then you should be assured with that group. I wish you the best of luck!!! BTW-Congrats on the upcoming birth!!!

My 2nd child a boy was induced 11 days early due to his size ( 7.5 lb estimate at 36 weeks) his induction didn't go so well because he was just so big he got stuck and we had to do an emergency C section. He was 9lbs 4oz 21 3/4 inches long with a 15 inch head and I am rather petite so yeah he wasn't coming out the right way. Yes he was jaundiced but so was my daughter and she wasn't induced we had to return to the hospital and she had to stay under the lights for several days after she was born, My son was already in NICU because he was born not breating and purple but again had nothing to do with the induction he took too long comming out. My Dr did comment that because he was so big my body might not have gone into labor on its own, because it knew it couldn't have handled it.

I would do it again if we ever had another baby if I could.

T., Please don't worry about induction! It's very safe! And you have stated you have healthy pregnancies. I don't think you have any worries! These are my experiences with inductions... My now 16 yr old son was induced due to a low heart beat from him & toxemia from me. I had him a month early at 6lbs, 7oz. My daughter, 13 yrs later, was induced just 11 days from the due date. Reason being I lost alot of weight during the end of my pregnancy, & she was born weighing 5lbs, 2oz. Home from the hospital at 5lbs. Just trust your Doctors advise! There must be a good reason why you chose that DR in the first place... Best of luck to you:)

T.,
Of course, letting your labor progress naturally is best for you and your baby (it's sort of like following nature's clock). But if your pregnancy has been normal and you and the baby are healthy, there will be minimal risk in inducing. I hope everything works out perfectly for you and that your husband is able to be there, regardless of which method you choose.
