Looking to buy a Kindle or Nook for our high school daughter. Not sure which would be better know nothing about either. She needs it to highlight and have a dictionary when she touches the word. Looking to spend the least amount of money to get what she needs. Later we will be looking to spend more for our other daughter who will be going to college next year and may need one with more features. So please share all your likes and dislikes. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for all the great feedback. My husband is out buying her the Nook as I type. Grandma offered to pay $199 for an upgrade from the $99 but she said she will stick to the less expensive because she just wants it for school reading and I feel good about that because of all your comments. Thanks again.

I LOVE my Kindle and HATE my daughter's Nook. We have never been able to get it to work!!

This Christmas, all 3 of my kids will be getting the Kindle Fires.

We got the Nook because it will accept all kinds of book files, including e-pub files. .The Kindle is so proprietary that you are pretty much stuck with nothing but books you bought from Amazon on it because they use encrypted MOBI format and don't accept use ePub format. Our library also did not support Kindle at the time (they may support it now). The Kindle is supposed to be a little better to read on, but I have no complaints about reading on our Nook. It's color and I have never gotten glare, even reading outside. I also like the little extras you get on the Nook. They are not really a selling point for me, but fun when you have it.

Our daugher is getting a Nook Color for Christmas. Big hurdle with Kindle was the proprietary nature of it -- Amazon alone can provide content for Kindles and I hate the thought of a single source, however huge, for all content, forever. Going with the Nook Color because it has a longer screen and you can adjust background color for easier reading -- regular Nook had a very gray background screen I found very difficult to read. Ask your daughter -- skip the surprise and have her go with you to Barnes and Noble store to look at both Nooks and find somewhere to look at Kindles. Nothing replaces actually seeing and tryiing a device.

I got the Nook Color for all the same reasons listed below. I like being able to get books from different sources and being forced to have to purchase from Amazon only. We went to Best Buy and were able to compare both the Kindle and the Nook Color as well as the original Nook side by side. Plus I can access the internet and email ect from my Nook Color. Plus the Nook offers a lot of books for free especially the classics that are on a lot of high school reading lists. You can also get instore support as well. The Lend Me feature is cool too, if she has friends or family with a nook they can share books for free for upto 14 days. My dad and I do this alot.

You need to make a decision - do you want her to have a book substitute (i.e., this will be strictly for reading) OR do you want her to have a mini computer which is able to read books? If you want a book sustitute, the basic Nook or Kindle will be your cheapest options. Based on the research I did, I believe you can just pick either the basic Kindle or Nook and you won't go wrong. If, instead you want a mini computer, then you need to compare the advanced Kindles and Nooks and also tablets.

I wanted a book substitute since my husband was teasing me about the stacks of books all over the house and in the cars. As a starting point I borrowed my husband's tablet (mini computer) which has all the bells and whistles (internet, colour, etc). But I found I hate reading on it. I had a hard time focusing on the books and my eyes/head would hurt after a while. It's not nearly close enough to a real book to suit my tastes which is apparently a common complaint with tablets. Next I borrowed a friend's Kindle and it was much better for reading. In the end I decided to buy a Nook. Partly I was thumbing my nose at Kindle/Amazon and I just preferred the Nook. So far I am very happy with my Nook. There are some very good deals out there right now.

A tablet computer is the better choice. Then you can have Kindle, Nook, Sony, Audible.com, and E-Music, among other things. :)

I did a mess of research and went with the Kindle touch. Really there is little difference but there is a difference. I love to read in the car and can't do that with my computer because of glare. You don't get glare with the Kindle.

Now if you get the color versions like the fire you are going to get glare. Then again this was my need, ya know?

I can't go on beyond my research, the touch doesn't come out till next Monday, I should have it in my hands by Wednesday so I will get back to you. :)

I have a nook color. I LOVE it. I got mine for exactly what Krista says.
It's basically an android tablet that has an ereader program.
Now Barnes and noble just came out with a new one the Nook Tablet. I am getting one of those for christmas.
Now I did have trouble with my nook it started acting up and I'd had it for over a year, I did not buy it at barnes and noble but we happen to be there when it started acting up again and I went and talked to the nook specialist , which wasn't the stores normal nook specialist she was just standing in for the guy while he took his lunch, anyway she called the customer service line for me and talked to the guy and they sent me a new one with in 3 days even though I didn't buy it from Barnes and noble , I bought it at best buy.
I can't say enough good things about the customer service I received from them even though I didn't even buy it there.
barnes and noble has over 1.8 million free books , all you have to do is put in the search bar of the nook "0.00" and it pulls up all the free books. And every friday they put another popular book on the free book list for that day. If I don't know the word in a book I just touch it and select from the menu it pulls up " look up" and it gives me the definition. the nook color price just dropped to 199.99. I can play music and movies and games on my nook color, check email, besides reading and being available to download from a variety of places. I can get books from barnes and noble, books a million , among others.
