Kid Tough Hard Wood Vacuum

I have hard wood in my kitchen and living room. With a 18month and 6 year old boys, I have lots of crumbs, sand and dirt. I'm looking for advise on an easy hand held or small sweeper type vacuum that is easy to use and store (get out quick and put away quick). It also needs to be kid-tough because both boys will want to help using it and I certainly do not want to discourage any cleaning help. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I got an Eureka 4 in 1 at WalMart for $20 and really like it. You can use it as a sweeper or a dustbuster, the handle telescopes, when it down, it's the perfect size for my 18month old. Thanks for everyone responses!!

I have a swiffer vac and it works great in the kitchen and bathrooms. It picks up the crumbs and food my 2 y.o. throws on the floor as well as dirt and junk. Also, my son can "help" with it and enjoys his "new toy" as I enjoy him doing more good than harm. Best of all, it is pretty cheap, only 20-30 bucks.

I've had this eureka the boss lightweight bagless vacuum for years & it works great on hardwood floors. I don't actually have hardwood now that we've moved (my old house was all hardwood) but it works just as well on the tile & linoleum. My boys, 4 & 2, help me by using this one if I'm busy with the other vacuum and if it's still in one piece after them I know it's tough! lol
I'm typically not a fan of eureka but this does the job when I'm in a pinch!
Good luck!
I'm sure they have a newer version out there so I'm interested to see what people suggest!

My FIL gave me the Swivel Sweeper as a gift a few Christmases ago and we love it! It works great on wood floors and is very light weight. My kids enjoy helping sweep with it.

We have the Swiffer Sweeper Vac. It doesn't hold a long charge maybe 10-12 minutes but I use it under the table on our wood floors after every meal. My kids use it too and they are 2 and 5. It is very lightweight and just has a cord to plug it in to charge the battery. Now that I have it I can't believe I lived without it :)

I never had hard wood before and didnt know what worked best one time I used an oil based cleaner and my daughter slipped and fell so I wouldnt suggest that at all..

I have to say, I went through 2 swivel sweepers in a year. I liked them so much that I did buy the second one. But I constantly had to clean/cut the hair from the bristles. And with both of them I had to take them apart and really clean them and free up stuff that would get caught in the bristles. When they were new they worked great at first. Didnt hold a charge for long but we had an extra battery back so one was always charged and ready to switch out.

After the second one gave out, I took it apart, cleaned it, new battery, still wouldnt work... we did some research. We checked online reviewers and ended up investing in a nice one. Or at least I think so...

It's called a ergorapido its made my electrolux. Dont get scared they sell them at best buy. Anyway, it has 2 speeds. I find the high setting works good on my tile and hard wood. But i have to switch it on low for the carpet its too much power and it too hard to glide. It emptys easily and with less mess of the swivel sweeper i think.

It sits on its charger upright whenever not in use, I have never lost a charge while using it... I normally go over my whole downstairs of my house once a day at least just to keep up. It also has a dust buster attatched that you unlock with the push of a button for couches and smaller messes... i used it the other day on the little kiddy table my daughter had crumbs everywhere, the car... anyway you get the idea.

I think it costs about 100 bucks I cant rememeber, but it has already outlived TWO swivel sweepers. My daughter has used it, dropped the handle on the hard wood and it still works so I would say it's pretty kid tough. Good luck. I hope you find a good one for you. Just look online and read posts from people who bought stuff. Amazon is good for that. Probably lowes, home depot, bed bath and beyond, best buy, ect... alot of the vacuum pages have a link that says see reviews.

here is a link to the vacuum i bought at best buy

Swivel Sweeper... you know, "As Seen On TV!" They have them at Bed Bath & Beyond, so use your 20% coupon... think they're about $20 after coupon. I have a short-haired dog and I like it better on hardwood than my Dyson.

We have a Dirt Devil Power Stick, which is perfect for that. We use it to do a quick crumb clean up and vac of the entrance area (both hard wood) pretty much every night and the kids take turns helping. It gets dropped often and still works fine. I will say it's not as great on carpets, but it sounds like it might work well for you.
