Keratosis Polaris

Hi everyone! My 3 year old son has a skin condition called keratosis polaris. I've had doctors tell me that it's eczema, but anything I've ever tried to treat it with hasn't worked. So finally, my new pediatrician said it's a little eczema, but that it was mostly keratosis polaris. This condition creates red bumps on the surface of the skin. The skin feels very dry and bumpy basically. I was wondering if anyone else suffers from this and has found anything that works to treat it. I feel awful for him because it's on his face, arms, and legs. I'd love to find something that works before he starts preschool this August. Thank you! By the way, I've already tried hydrocortizone, gold bond, and using natural detergents/soaps. My doctor doesn't recommend me cutting anything out of diet at this point to see if it's an allergic reaction.

What can I do next?

my daughter has it - she's 17. she's had it for as long as she can remember (I've had her since she was 9). we went to the dermatologist who tod us that he could prescribe topical stuff (which she never did on a regular enough basis for it to work) but that she would eventually grow out of it.

she still hasn't grown out of it, but it has limited itself to just her upper arms and upoer legs now, so it has gotten better.

Try aquaphor lotion by Eucerin. It's thick like vaseline and a little pricey but it works. My son is 4 and gets the bumps on his arms, cheeks, and legs. After using it a few days you should notice a difference.

Hey girl!! My name is H. and I'm from Lexington, KY. My son had excema and has now completely cleared up!! I started shopping with this health and wellness catalog company that has helped our whole family!! It has helped everyones allergies, asthma, and excema, plus alot more. It's also less expensive than wal-mart. The laundry detergent is AWESOME!! You can wash the whole families clothes in the same detergent AND it is less expensive! I know that Aveno and Dreft is pretty expensive! There are many harsh chemicals in the products you use daily that can cause this NOT to clear up. It's not only just the soap and detergent you use it's everything. I would LOVE to share this information with you!! You can call or email me. My contact info is ____@____.com and my phone is ###-###-####!

Hi. I have KP, as does my oldest son (7). I asked my dr at about age 30, wondering all my life why I had these little pimply bumps on the backs of my arms and a few on the backs of my thighs. She said it was KP, it is hereditary and there is nothing you can do for it, except exfoliate very well and then mosturize very well. I have had some luck, applying baby oil on my wet skin after exiting the shower. Look it up online, there is a lot of info out there on it and some "home remedies" too. Don't sweat it. I feel bad too I gave it to my little guy, he has a few bumps on his back, face and legs, mostly his arms though. But, I am grateful it is KP and not something that is so much worse!

Editing to add: FOR ADULT SKIN ONLY!

This works for me, to minimize the bumps. I use a pumice stone on the backs of my arms to exfoliate. Then afterwards, use a heavy duty foot cream or vaseline maybe on them. works great!

i actually have this on my upper arms and it can be very bothersome but i have found that just making sure i put lotion on every night after i get out of the shower and before bed it helps a ton!!! i just started doing this about a month ago and the redness has gone down and so has the itching. i use a very mild soap in the shower (dove) and i use st ives vitamin E with vitamin A advanced therapy lotion because it has no fragrance and does not irritate my skin. most lotions leave me itchy or greasy this one doesn't... good luck!

Hi Julie! My name is L. and my son was told that he had eczema at a very young age and to treat it with cortisone. Well, we tried that and it did NOT help. My suggestion to you is this amazing lotion from Melaleuca. It is an online company only and they specialize in products that are all natural, non toxic and amazing for anyone with almsot any problem. I use Renew lotion on my kids after baths and have not had a problem since. I highly recommend it along with many other kid safe and friendly products! Let me know if you would like more info....and good luck with your little guy! I can't imagine how miserable he is at times. Have a great night!

My daughter has what the doctors say is Eczema, but we're not 100% sure that is what it is. She also has Alopetia. Try some Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream. It's like 9 dollars a tube at Walgreens in the baby section. There is also a body wash that goes with it. It doesn't make the bumps go away, but it keeps the skin moist, and right now you can't even tell my daughter has anything unless you really look. You can use it as many times a day as you like. Let me know if this works for you...it's a life saver in this house. J.

Hi there. I am sorry to hear what you and your son are going through. I am not trying to sell anything here so please no one take this the wrong way. But, I sell this one product it is called Body Dew. I have a lot of customers that buy this for eczema and other dry skin conditions. Now it contains Peanut Oil so if the person useing it is allergic to Peanuts don't use it. But it is a awesome product. Julie if you would like to just try this let me know I can send you a sample thing to see if it helps any or offer anyone here a 50% discount on it. I am just trying to help. If you do want to try it email me at ____@____.com

Hey there. Ok, so I have KP. I have had it since I was 9. My Mom has it and so did my Grandmother. They told me for years I needed to use lotion everyday and it would go away. It didnt help one bit. I finally went to a Dermatologist. First of all, IT IS NOT ezcema. Nowhere near the same thing. Ezcema is treatable and cureable. KP is not. There is no cure. Sure there are a handful of pricey lotions that claim to cure it, but I'm taking the advice of my dermatologist to not buy them. I have found in my lifetime that during the summer when my skin gets tan and dry, it looks better. So I go to tanning beds. I am NOT saying to do this to your son. My daughter has it also on her arms, legs and face. I have noticed on her (she's 4) that when summer comes, it diminishes somewhat. She never complains of it itching or hurting at all. I am very sorry that there is no cure available yet. For both of our kids. I have learned to live with it. It is pretty common. So don't worry about it right now. I am sorry that I don't have any straight answers for you as to how to cure it, but I am letting you know there are tons of other people out there with this same condition.

Hi I am 28 and I have k.p. I have found that if you exfolliate every three days and constantly (2xs a day) fully mosturize it goes away. He is young for exfoliation like we use...but maybe a gentle soap with an exfolliant like dove or ivory. I have it on my legs and elbows....but if I do those two things it goes away. The minute I stray away it comes back.

Hey I have the same thing except mine is on my thighs and upper arms. I have had it all my life and had a dermatoligist say that it was heridatary (sp) but basically it was ingrown hairs. Anyway when I was in middle school they prescribed me this smelly expensive lotion that worked but it made it move down my arms and legs. I finally just gace up and said I would deal with it. However it being on your sons face I understand you wanting to cure it. I would take him to a dermatoligist and see what they say. Maybe they can prescribe something for it.

Hi Julie,

Take a look at the baby care products at www.arbonne.com. They are botanically-based and really work! If you want more info, email me. (I don't sell arbonne, just know the products work, and could send you more info, if you'd like.)

I hope you'll find something that will work for your son!

Ask your doctor about triamcinolone (cream or ointment), or about tanning/uv beds. My son has had skin problems all his life and these are what worked best for him. If all else fails a dermatologist might have more suggestions. Hope this helps.

My daughter was born with eczema at birth also, the doctor says that it will also lead into allergies. She has been using Eladel cream since she was about 6 months old. Make sure you have good insurance it is about $198.00 a tube. Thank goodness for $20 co-pays. My insurance would not cover it until she was two years old so the doctor kept giving me samples until she was two. It also is the only cream that does not have staroids in it. I like that part. You can ask the doctor for a few samples and see if it works first but it is fantastic.... Within a few hours the redness and bumps an much smaller.

Julie,

I've always been told that my son has eczema too. His skin is sensitive to a lot of things though. He will be covered in bumps from head to toe! Eucerin works pretty good on him, I slather him up and I only bathe him twice a week. I use a mild detergent, and I dress him lightly for bed time. These things all seem to help, but they have not completely gone away!

Hey Julie. I have KP and my dermatologist said it is pretty much that as your body sheds dead skin cell, your pores trap them and that is what creates the bumps. I found that using a loofa in the shower works. It has gotten so much better since I switched from a regular wash cloth. Also she gave me a lotion($$$$$$) that was a miracle. I forget the name of it, but it really worked. I haven't found a dr. in this area yet, we are pretty new here. It is not fun having it, but there are ways to manage it. I found that when I get hot, it gets worse on my face. Maybe you could ask your ped. for a referral to a dermatologist. Good Luck.

Hi there!
My son also has eczema and at first, they told us it was ring worm and treated him for a long time for that with no success. We got another opinion and it turns out it was eczema and they put him on a cream called Locoid which cleared it up very quickly. (it's prescription) Later on we were told that they stopped making it but they gave us something similar that was a mixture of prescription strength hydrocortisone and eucrin cream (60 gm) I think it's got to be much stronger than the over the counter stuff. Eczema is an autoimmune condition, so not sure if changing the diet would work very well anyway. The dermatologist told us to never use dryer sheets and to always use Dove Unscented soaps for his baths. Good luck, hope you find the answers!

Hi. I am so sorry for your son, and sorry that I don't have any answers for you. My 5 year old has the same problem (I think). He has had these little bumps for a LONG time all over his chest, upper arms, and his legs. The doctor told me not to use dryer sheets, and to slather him down with lotions and baby oil to treat the rash. (She also said it was mild eczma). Needless to say, nothing has worked. I have even bought the otc baby products for eczma made by Gentle Naturals, to no avail. My son does not complain about this, no itching, pain, etc... so his is mainly a cosmetic problem. Even though it is mostly covered by his clothing, Like you, I am still desperate to find an answer!! I will check back to see what kind of responses you get, but if you find something that works, I would really appreciate it if you would pass on the information. Also, does your son have asthma by chance? My son has mild asthma, and a previous doctor told me that this rash was a normal occurence in chldren with asthma. I hope you find some answers! K.
