Suddenly I have this bizarre rash like thing on my hands and legs. I can't remember what the dermatoloist called it but the only treatment was lotion? Has anyone heard of this?

What can I do next?

Amlactin Lotion is what you normally use for this. It is usually hair folicals that are clogged, and can get infection if not treated. At the pharmacy I work at we see it all the time! Try a gental exfoliating body scrub then use Amlaction Lotion, it also comes in a cream form. The LacHydrin in it helps to get rid of the bumps!

It could be keratosis pilaris. My son has it, and they recommmend Eucerin or Cetaphil lotion for it.

I can't be of much help. It could be so many things. Allergic reation to pollens, new flowers, additive to soils, laundry detergent, stress sometimes causes a rash type symptom which itches and cause skin to peel on hands and feet especially between toes and fingers. Since it is on the legs and hands are you shaving your legs with a different gel, cream, etc. Hans and legs would be affected. Let us know how big an area , size of bumps, color, etc. Maybe I will have another idea. Benydryl cream helps itching and swelling. Its over the counter.

I wonder if it could be eczema? Just make sure to keep your skin very hydrated and do use a lot of lotion. I've heard lotions with oatmeal work well, but I usually stick to lotions for sensitive skin. I developed eczema after I had my daughter 3 years ago. It doesn't really bother me much, but when it does itch, it itches like crazy! Good luck!

Hey M.,

My doctor said he wanst to see ALL rashes. It could be shingles and they can treat it if you get to the Dr. in time. Have you seen the doctor? Chicken pox is going around and it sometimes can make shingles flare up in adults.

It is keratosis pilaris. I have it on the back of my arms. When I asked my dr. about it, he said getting out in the sun was the only thing that would make it go away. Unfortunately, I burn very easily so I stay out of the sun but did notice that in the summer, my left arm isn't as bad as my right (just from the sun while I am driving).

I have seen an ad for a DermaDoctor KP Duty lotion that is supposed to help. Another board that I read has discussed KP and said that the KP Duty Lotion does work but it is expensive.

I have had keratosis polaris since a young age. I don't think this is it. You would have had this before adulthood. Around age 35 is when it is supposed to get somewhat better. Sounds like maybe a reaction to a new lotion, soap or laundry item???

I have keratosis pilaris, too, and it stinks! My derm. says to not take hot showers (which I love and refuse to give up), and to use an over the counter lotion. I don't know why, but putting lotion on my legs twice per day is just something I've never remembered to do, so I just put up with it.

i was just reading some of the responses and it is not chicken pox, shingles or eczema!! i have had them since i was a teenager and so has my sister. there are lotions to get that will get rid of them. i have not tried any of them b/c i'm nursing my son and can't use that strong stuff at this point. but my sister has the lotion and she said it works great. i worked at an ob-gyn for 5 years and saw this type of thing all of the time. the hormones from a pregnancy cause them as well. now when i was pregnant, they didn't itch or anything, then right after i gave birth, they itched like crazy. now they rarely itch so you can tell that your hormone levels really affect it. but use that lotion if you can, it'll work:) lots of luck.
ps... i can't wait to get rid of those lil bumps, everyone always thinks i'm cold.
oh yeah, i also saw in a magazine.... go to sephora.com and do a search for it. the lotion that they sell for it might be cheaper. i know it's a type of skin irritation but i can't think of the name of it.

I agree with the keratosis that others have responded. I've had it for years and didn't know what it was until I took my daughter who was 1 at the time for a checkup and she had it and the doc said what it was. Her pediatrician recommended using one of those nylon scrunchies for the bath to exfoliate the skin. It definitely works. Good luck.

I get a rash every spring. I go to the tanning bed a few times (only for a few minutes) and it clears up. This along with the lotion helps tremendously. But you didn't hear it from me....

It sounds like keratosis pilaris. It's a genetic condition where protein in the skin builds up in the hair follicles and plugs them up giving the skin a red, bumpy appearance. The build-up can also cap off the follicle causing an ingrown hair. Most dermatologists recommend exfoliation and lotion. There is no cure but for some people, it will diminish (or even disappear) on its own with age.

Yes, I have heard of it. I have seen it and I have I had it several times in my 56 years.
Lotions are one way of handling it, but only if it is a certain type of "rash". Some of them are hormonel and require a different treatment than other do.
I had to ask myself what I had been in contact with that was different. Once it was from getting new clothes I didn't wash before I wore. Once I had changed to a different soap, detergent, etc.
One time it was something we had used on the lawn to control weeds, bugs, etc.
All of these different types require different treatments.

Hi M., yes my husband has been having the same thing. He also went to a dermatologist and like you I don't remember what he called it but lotion is supposedly the only thing that will help it. Well he use's the lotion faithfully but the only thing that has cleared it up for any length of time at all is a vacation in California. No kidding we came out here to visit our two son's and it has cleared up. We don't know if it is the sun on it or just why this has happened. I don't know where you live but we live in Indiana and we go back home next Wed. so we will see if it comes back.
Good Luck K.

I'm assuming eczema. Although if that's what it was, there is Elidel lotion (Rx) you can get.
