Keratosis Pilaris - Does Anyone's Child Have This Skin Condition?

Our Pediatrician says our son has Keratosis Pilaris, a harmless skin condition where he has bumps on his arms, legs and face...also known as "chicken skin". Lovely. Has anyone had experience with this? We've just been putting Aquaphor on his skin daily which helps a little, but I guess I've just been expecting it to go away and it hasn't. He's had it for months. Thanks for your input.

My 2yr old has this on his rib cage. I've read that it helps to apply lots of moisturizer and it is actually working (they even suggested vaseline). I'm hoping it doesn't spread. Good luck to you and your little one!

My husband has this... the only thing that controls it... is Salycilic Acid (He uses nutragena body wash)... you CAN'T put this on a baby...

We think my son has it too... I suspect it's a bit of a food allergy... and the use of any chemical on his body...

I use Dr. Brommers Magic soap on him... it's mostly oils... nothing in it to bother the skin best as I can tell... Our Pedi said we could use a product with lots of Urea... but I've not read anything on that that makes me feel ok putting on a small child. Also, I'm also switching from my beloved organic laundry detergent to Tide Free... something about it that prevents skin issues (in that many laundry detergents are the culprit)

Small children USUALLY grow out of this... but some don't. It can get really bad. (don't want to freak you out)

There is actually a forum/support group for this... a section for parents of children with the condition... and lots of idea...

Let me know if I can be more help...

I have this and have my whole life, but only on my arms. I never knew what it was until I was much older. I have tried many treatments and none eliminated it completely. I use moisturizing body wash and I only use allergy free dryer sheets--this last thing really helps and was suggested by my doctor. Stress can make it worse as well. If your son has allergies, then these two things might be related. My younger son has this a bit, but so far it isn't too bad...he is six.

By the way, this is very common. Don't stress too much. You will, through trial and error, figure out how to manage it best.

My 20 month old has this too and suffers from eczema. I apply lotion to her body. Though the bumps don't go away completely, it helps a bit.
