Keeping 9 Month Old Dry at Night

Now that my 9 month old son is sleeping 12 hours at night, I'm having a hard time keeping him dry until morning. He soaks through his 2 sleepers. I've tried different brands and types of diapers. My mother-in-law suggested plastic pants over his diaper but I must not be looking in the right places because I haven't been able to find any. He is about 20 lbs. I've looked at the overnight diapers but haven't seen any for that size. Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful! Thanks! :)

So What Happened?

Thanks SO much to all of you for your advice! I found Huggies Overnights size 4 at Babies R Us and we've had 3 dry nights! I also picked up some plastic pants to have on hand, but I'm hoping I won't have to use those. Happy New Year!

I had a similar problem with my son at that age. I happened to have been using cloth diapers and could not get a combo that would keep him dry. So I tried Seventh Generation disposables and they worked great. I never had night leakage again. I don't know what brands you have tried but I recommend 7th Generation. Cub used to sell them but now I can only buy them at my local co-op.

I dont know if you are still going thru this prollum, but if you get up in the middle of the night slip thru to his room and change his diaper. He will contunue to get wet if he sleeps with a bottle or sippy cup. Good Luck

Huggies Overnights - Size 4

My son started using these when he was only wearing Size 3's in regular diapers but the bigger size worked just fine for him and kept him dry all night. Rarely do we have any leakage anymore.

I have a nine month old that had the same problem a few months ago. We're now using the Huggies Overnight brand (#4). They seem to work pretty well and have a wider fastening band than the diapers we use during the day. They only fail when the baby is trying to explore the four corners of his crib and his diaper is filled to capacity.
My mother mentioned the plastic pants as well (typically for cloth diapers), but I worried about yeast infections...that may be unfounded, though.
Anyhow, hope that helped.
Best wishes.

We used pampers and we never had problems. Just for fun, we did a test on the #1 diapers and they could fit an entire 12 oz. of water before they started leaking. Just a fun FYI. That number would only increase when you had a bigger diaper.

Also, if you get desperate to find those plastic pants, you can get them at pools. The YMCA sells them for kids that need to cover a diaper before going in the water. They're sort of costly, like $2 a pair, but you probably won't need many anyway since they wash so easily. We used to wash ours in the sink and hang to dry.

I think if you put the diaper on a little tighter at night, it might help. My 7 month old had the same problem, we use luvs, and since we put the diaper a little bit tighter, he has not been wetting through the diaper. He sleeps about 10 hours a night for us as well.

Good luck!

My 17mo old twins are the same way. What I finally did was to go up one size in diapers we call them our "nighttime" diapers. That has seemed to help us.

I've seen the rubber plastic diaper pant things at the thrift stores.

Also Overnight Huggies work great!

Are you giving him a bottle in his crib? That created problems for me keeping my daughter dry!

I so could have written your thread! My son is now 2 years old and has been a huge wet leaker since he was around 10 months old. We have tried the various diapers and found that the Huggies Overnights, Size 5 worked the best for us. We found he was pulling down on his diaper in the middle of the night. We put a onesie type of PJ on him and that stopped. Good Luck. You can find the overnights at Wal Mart. There is a lot of padding in the frontal area for those little rockets. :)

We just go up a size during the night also. The plastic pants are a good thought but then you'll just have more stinky laundry to do.
Happy New Year!

Though you've tried different brands of diapers, have you tried a different size? Usually when my son gets toward the mid-high weight range for a diaper, he's fine during the day, but leaks at night. We move up a diaper size and just make sure the diaper is on tight (tabs together or overlapping) that seems to work.

Currently we've had to move from pampers size 3 at night to pampers size 4. My son weighs about 22 lbs, only 2 lbs more than your son. Just an idea.

Hi S.~

My 7month old son has been sleeping through the night since the third day home. PTL:) So...... my point is I was running into the same issue as yourself. Huggies overnites size 4 has worked. My son is around 18 pounds and we haven't had any problems with the way they fit or leaking issues.

Good Luck!

I just started using Huggies overnights on my son. He sleeps at least 12 hours as well. They are working great. I got them at Woodman's (the one of the West side on Watts). They have up to stage 5, although your son would probably only need stage 4. Good luck.

I also had a hard time finding plastic pants when a preK teacher suggested using them during potty training my son. I finally found some at Kmart. Hopefully this will be a short faze with your little guy!

Like what many other people said, we go up in size when this happens with our son. We moved up to size 4 diapers when our son was under 22 lbs because of it.

My 17 month has had the same problem too. I found the plastic pants at Walmart and Target, but they really did not help. The ones with plastic over cloth actually worked a little better, but we still got leaking. Going up a size in his Pampers Cruisers helped when he was younger. Now we are using the Huggies Overnights and those have been the best fix yet. But we still deal with leaking sometimes. We've found the Overnights at Target and Walmart. You probably could get away with trying the Size 4. I know I found those at Target for sure.

Good luck. If you find anything else that works, I'd love to hear about it!

I'm not sure if you're already doing this, but if your son's "pee pee" down before putting the diaper on, that helped our son a lot, so it had more absorbency by the diaper. Also, plastic pants are exceptionally hard to find right now, but we did find them at Walmart in the infant section. They weren't by the toddlers underwear where you would think, they were over by the receiving blantkets and such. I hope this helps!

Peapods on the corner of Snelling and St. Clair in St. Paul has plastic pants for over diapers. Also check one step ahead's website- they have a number of "solutions" for this problem-- I have been dealing with it in one form or another for 20 months now!! ( Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear) Overnights also can work well.

Good Luck.

I agree with the mom that suggested the bigger size. We did that same thing with Huggies because she was sleeping between 10-12 hours at night. Worked like a charm. Though now, she is getting a little too comfortable in them. Her diaper will be so full when she wakes up she could care less if we change her. We might have to get different diapers when we start potty training. Good Luck!

We just went up one size in diapers for our 9.5 mo old son- during the day he wears size 3 pampers and at night size 4- it has worked great and we don't have to spend extra money on the overnight diapers....Good Luck
