Okay I've never thought about it before, but I guess it would suck! I don't agree w/ others making comments about staying in school though, mechanics can make good money and most have school training.
Did you know that it's kind of mean to get your oil changed on a slushy, snowy day? My cousin works at Walmart in the tire/lube department. He was just telling me what kind of he LL it is on a day like today to be rained on all day by ice, snow, and mud. LOL! I would have never thought about it.
Edited to add:
I did feel bad for all people in blue collar jobs when people said the mean comments about staying in school. I did not say anything because my cousin is a prime example of some people that never really get a head. But, I love him to peices. Years ago, he just refused to do anything other than low end work and rarely brought home more than 100-200 per week. His first wife has resented and divorced him for that. He chose to live in the southern part of Missouri, in the middle of nowhere. You can't get a loaf of bread without driving a long ways. He likes his country life, horse friends, dogs, and guns. But he DID end up going to school and he graduated with a certification in mechanics of some sort. He told me once that he isn't able to use that and seemed to be saying he messed up. It happens! No one would accuse him of being overly ambitious. BUT, I did mean for this to be fun and yes enlightenment.
This morning I was reading an online board where people are talking about a controversial decision in I forget which state. It's about trying to come up with more funding for childcare. Daycare providers are suffering all over the USA as the state paid funds are drying up for their state paid kids. Often daycare providers are spending the money from their husbands jobs to feed and care for the children while they are getting maybe 20-30% of the going rate and have no hope of getting paid anything close to a living wage. Some short sighted person came on and started spouting off how childcare providers have no business trying to make a living providing childcare and how if the woman didn't have money to pay caregivers, then they should cross their legs and keep them crossed. IGNORANCE!
Momma L.... I'm so BAD... I do order pizza on days like this. But I do only order from Pizza Hut on a day like this because they are 2 blocks away. :)
In my 30's already... They do work in a garage. But they don't have time to wait for the ice and snow and mud to stop dripping and they pull the oil pans in a cut out in the floor, UNDER the car. So it would be like standing under a stinky, dirty, oily mess with ice, mud, and snow on top of the already unpleasentness.
Okay I've never thought about it before, but I guess it would suck! I don't agree w/ others making comments about staying in school though, mechanics can make good money and most have school training.
Oh yea, but just remind him he is still getting paid!! I agree with everyone else too about the pizza man, UPS man, whoever works outside!! But they are still employed!!! Yea for that!!!!!
And ask him, if no one came in for an oil change, they'd probably send him home because of no work, right?
To answer the question: I hadn't considered that getting an oil change on a snowy day makes it messier for the mechanics. I've never done it, but I too, thought that since they work inside that they weren't subjected to the elements. :)
Now:
I must add that some of these comments here and the flowers sent to them are the reason trolls come on here saying this site is full of mean [w]itches. L. made this post as a light-hearted, interesting fact/ enlightenment sort of thing and rather than see it as such some of you took is as an opportunity to belittle someone and their employment.
Not only were some of the comments rude, but some of you are quite ignorant. It, obviously, never occurred to some people that perhaps L.'s cousin or others LIKE/ENJOY their manual jobs. Just because he made a gripe about it doesn't make it a "lousy" job. We have no idea what his level of education is and it's pretty snobby to assume he or others work their particular jobs because they didn't stay in school or didn't go to college and couldn't get anything "better".
I was taught to never look down on anyone, but especially service people. I truly appreciate the people that collect the garbage, fix the cars, deliver the packages, clean the houses, etc... We can't all do it all, so someone has to do those things and if they all stopped we'd be up a creek. I see their service as great contributions.
Anyway, even people in the best/highest paid jobs gripe about some aspects of their jobs and a college degree doesn't always guarantee what some would consider a great job or guarantee personal fulfillment.
(I have been there!) Being in a lesser paid job doesn't make someone a failure. Be careful what you say and how you treat people, you never know what's in store for your future.
Yeah that is why we raise our kids to stay in school. Jobs like that suck.
My grandfather used to call that, "Good, honest work." Phooey on those that don't appreciate it.
Oh yeah...it's all the stuff coming off of the undercarriage, right? Your poor cousin - I'll add that job to my list of "stay in school, kids, unless you want to spend the rest of your life doing [insert lousy job here]" warnings.
I'll add one...the Drive Thru on a rainy or snowy day. I did this in high school and was constantly shocked by the people who didn't turn their wipers off, flinging water, ice and grime into my face.
Sorry I guess I am turing into a troll. I am so appauled by the ignorance of some of you on here. For fricks sake she was making a humorious notation, and there we have it bashing! I am so sorry that the oil change boy is not up to your standards in life that you feel the need to bash. You know what? I pitty YOU!! I pitty you for the ignorance you are consumed with. I pitty you for the fact that your children have to grow up with you not treating everyone as equals. I pitty you for thinking that you are better than people when clearly you just have a ego that has taken over. For those of you that dont understand what is meant by the comment maybe you shouldnt have responded. To sit and back and say "This is why I tell my kid to stay in school' Or blah blah blah Really? I can't wait for the day that your children don't live up to your standards and they disappoint you. I can't wait for the reaction you are going to have, and I hope to god when that time comes your kids tell you right where to go!
For some people they let their children live their dreams, and sorry but where I come from Mechanics start out as the oil change boys and work their way up.
So why am I so pissed? Becuase my husband started out as that oil change boy! He graduated from High school, went on to a technical collage, got gold star certified by mopar, does continuing training, and keeps his certification up. He knows more about cars than some of you know about common equallity, shame on you! He got an amazing job opportunity and decided to change it up and now works for a private bussiness. Although my husband may be valued to the irnorant high nose people as a "grease monkey" He has an amazing benifits package, insurance rocks (They pay over 80% of premium), and although there is some long hours in the week they pay him for his time and they pay him well.
So for those of you who happen to come across this please take the ignorance and pitty these women. For those of you whos children, boyfriends husbands, etc. are interested in mechanics it can have amazing opportunites. My husband started out washing cars at 15 for a whopping $6.25, at 18 started doing mechanics work for about $8.50 an hour and now at 31 is now going to be making over $65,000 this year, so snicker to that, high nose ladies!
Signed R., The loving wife of a mechanic :)
Yeah, I figure it must suck for anyone working in those conditions. I don't order pizza or anything else for those people on days like that either.
Duly noted-thank you!
Ha. Never thought about it. Thanks for the insight.
We don't have cold weather but we have HOT weather. I always send cool thoughts to the roofers and road workers in the summer. 100°F+ plus the sun beating down plus the heat off the roof/road plus the roofing/road tar.... It may be a job and it may pay but what a tough one. It never hurts to remember those in tougher jobs and to be considerate.
JB thanks for the mention about the wipers in a drive thru. I feel like a dolt since I don't turn my wipers off.
That is why we expect our kids to go to college.
I never really thought about it. It makes sense though! Unfortunately, in my state it rains about 10 months out of the year, so our oil change guys are going to get dripped on.
L.
But the other side of that coin is that if no one got their oil changed on bad weather days they might be out of a job. Better to work in those conditions than not at all.
I have always assumed they did oil changes in a garage...with a roof?
ROTFLMAO!!! No, didn't think of that!!
thanks for the laugh...and food for thought...
