Do you participate in potlucks, whether it be office, school, church, neighborhood, etc? If you don't, why not? If you do, what is your favorite dish to bring? Have you ever took something to eat when you didn't bring anything?

I didn't bring anything to the dessert/snack potluck at my office today and I did sneak a brownie - oooooo I know, lol. I my defends, it was the end of the day and everything was mostly gone. It was just a little piece, but I feel kinda bad :) Any other offenders out there?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the responses. Our potlucks are never mandatory and everyone is encouraged to enjoy because that's just how our office is. Some people have a rule that they never eat at the potlucks and some seem to always eat but didn't bring anything. I always bring something except this time because I was too busy traveling on business and preparing for relatives. But yes, I got tempted by the plate of brownies next to the copier when I went to make copies and I let my inner moocher out.

I like them, and think they're fun. I wish there were more opportunities for it. Food is an easy ice breaker and brings people together. From there, we can play games or have great conversations, hopefully a good mix of serious and funny. I think there's something to be said for sharing and receiving, and the goodwill it helps create. I don't have a favorite dish though; it depends on what's going on, if someone assigns me to a specific type of food (appetizer, side, dessert, drink, etc). There's always offenders. I think as long as you aren't there front and center to make a full plate before everyone else has gone through, it's perfectly fine.
I've done potlucks with neighbors, friends, a church, our ladies Bible study, and the office. They're much more fun at a home I think, even if it's work colleagues, but at someone's home.....the talking and getting to know each other isn't really as "feasible" at work because, well, you have to work. :)
I'm 100% with Bridgett on this one...I'd rather the food be eaten then me worry about bringing it back home. A step further, I would even possibly get my feelings hurt, lol, if someone didn't eat my food. (I'd get over it, but I'd be like "dang---this isn't good???") I think you being called tacky and a moocher for a single brownie towards the end of the day is silly and a bit over the top. Claws are out today...what's the deal? This is the 2nd out of 4 posts that I've seen some harsh answers. 'Tis the season......for merriment and grinches alike, I suppose. :)

If I bring food to share, I would rather people eat it (even if they didn't bring anything) than to bring leftovers home after the gathering.

The potlucks that I am normally involved in are at my church...I normally bring a "main dish" ( meat) a salad and a dessert.
Some of my favorites are Goulash, or anything with meat, pasta, sauce so that it goes further.
I have a tuna salad that I love to make for a salad luncheon...got it from a friend about 40 years ago and still use it religiously
Sheet cakes for dessert....

I normally don't participate in potlucks...if I do I buy something and that is what I eat. I have this phobia, but once in a while I will but definitely not at work.

Oh and I don't think I've ever eaten anything if I didn't bring but not because of that...because I didn't bring something I would eat. make sense?

I normally participate. The rare times I don't are when I forget. If I forget, I generally don't eat anything unless someone specifically says go ahead, just because I feel uncomfortable. Most of the people I work with don't care and say go, eat something. They don't want to take it home. I do get miffed when someone who NEVER brings anything feels free to eat and then get seconds and thirds. That is wrong. If you forget one day, I don't have any problem with you taking some of the food.

My favorite dish is either pigs in a blanket, if I actually have time to prep the night before, or chicken rice, since I can cook it quick in the morning.

Tacky of you. Even at the end of the day the leftovers are still for those who brought food. Maybe someone could chew on soemthing during the ride home. Also there is usually someone always monitoring misbehavior like yours. You are A moocher.
