JFF: Have You Ever NOT Stopped Your Child...

...from doing something stupid for your own amusement?

Every time we go to our favorite Mexican restaurant, the girls put the super hot green chili sauce, just a dab, on a chip to 'earn' a lollipop afterwards... um, okay, NO ONE ever prompted them to do this, they came up with this completely on their own, and they've ALWAYS gotten a lollipop afterwards so I have no idea where this came from, but now it's tradition.

EXTREMELY hilarious watching them eat the stuff, then flip out and chug their drinks and rub ice on their tongues ;) Last time, the baby grabbed the top to the sauce and actually stuck his tongue inside of it, OMG, my husband and I were dying laughing... weird kids. (Even stranger, the baby wanted MORE after that!!)...

Another time, our 8 year old was absentmindedly sucking a Slurpee down in record time. Probably should have warned her about brain freeze, but the thought didn't come out of my mouth fast enough... she was literally rolling around on the floor holding her head and laughing because the brain freeze 'hurt so bad it tickled'... we were howling laughing!!

So have you ever NOT stopped your child from doing something really stupid, just to see how it would turn out? ;)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

@Lisa, I'll let you know when I find your sense of humor, it appears to be lost ;) ETA: sorry that happened to you, but *I'M* not doing this to my kids, they're doing it to THEMSELVES.

@PB&J, my thoughts EXACTLY... 'what did you THINK would happen?!' ;)

@Denise, he totally did it before we could stop him. I'm making myself feel better by thinking the 'spice' would kill any germs (ew!)

Well, I've told my kids a million times too much sugar would give them a belly ache. I've never actually let them find out for themselves. Until just this Halloween night. I WARNED my son he wouldnt' want to eat ALL of his candy at once. As soon as we got in from trick or treating, their dad called. While I was on the phone, I saw my 3yo son mowing through his bucket of goodies. I "didn't bother" to correct him because I was immersed in my conversation. A few minutes later, a little green, he came up a told me he was going to throw up. I helped him to the bathroom, and yup, up came the candy. Sigh. He's only been taking one piece per day, by his own choice, since.

My husband and I watched grinning from a cabin window as his son, about 12 or 13 at the time, stepped off the dock and put one foot in the canoe. Which then drifted sloooowly out into the water!! Splash! Hilarious. We couldn't have gotten there in time to catch him anyway, and all that happened was that he got wet ;-)

HAHAHA

My kids now say to each other "That's what we call a natural consequence." or "You might be a candidate for the Darwin award if you keep that up."
I am probably not the most sympathetic mom out there.

All four of mine got lemons before they were a year. My oldest daughter used to suck on banana peppers that came in pizza boxes.

We call those "self-correcting mistakes" at our home & they can be extremely valuable tools in teaching your kids with the side affect of being amusing to parents who have a sense of humor, that is.

Well, my oldest son liked Magicshell on his ice cream. When he asked for it, it sounded like this:

Mommy, can I have ishreem with Vagisil?

BAHAWAHA!

So, I um, may have somewhat deliberately NOT corrected him, because when we walked up to Ben and Jerrys for a treat it was JUST TOO HILARIOUS to hear him ask the girl behind the counter for VAGISIL on his cone!

Happy Weekend Girl, pinkies up!

:)

Sorry but I do not see anything humurous about a child with a burning mouth or headache.

Added: I have a sense of humor; its just different from yours. When I was young, my grandfather was eating something and I asked for some of it. He told me to take a big wiff of it first. Well I did and it was fresh horseradish. So while I was standing there, not being able to breath and my throat burning and eyes watering, my mother and grandfather were standing there laughing at me. So no, I do not think what you did to your kids is funny

My daughter figured out a VERY early age that when Dad said certain theings..to be on guard. "Go ahead...try it if you got your "Big Girl Britches" on"...or another version was simply "You wearing the Big Girl Britches today?" then he would offer her things. But it was their game in a way. And amazingly...she loves hot and spicy food, asparagus, brocolli...tons of stuff I would never eat and he loves. I like celery and lettuce and she hates both of those things..so somehow his taunting little game worked! LOL

Many a time she went to the grocery store in -5* weather...in mismatched ankle socks, a tutu and sweater vest and undershirt, rainboots and a hoodie...or something similar. The next time the outfit would be warmer. After about 2 weeks, she was in full snowsuit, boots, hat, gloves and scarf. She needed to figure it out on her own.

It is STILL how she learns many things at age 17....her way, slowly but surely, some things faster than others, and with her own flair and style!

She still wears mismatched socks...ALWAYS. Its a quirk of hers (she thinks its a waste of time to search for matching socks in the drawer..and having them all the same is silly when there are so many cute and fun ones out there. She has 2 giant full drawers of socks :-)

Great question!

We call it self-limiting....

I like to think of them as "teaching moments" - makes me feel better when I laugh to myself. I usually end with, "Well, what did you THINK would happen?!?"

Kinda...my son was 2 and insisted on going down the slide face first, even though I warned him he wouldn't be able to stop himself. Well...he wasn't able to stop himself. He face planted (with my hand on his back to slow him down) and got up like nothing was wrong. Then, he looked at his hands and realized how dirty he was. The other parents were rolling because he looks up at me and starts crying big crocodile tears, "I'm all DIRTY!!" Wasn't even bothered by the fact that he landed on his face, just that he got dirty. SMH he's his father's child!

I do it and I especially like not correcting their verbal mistakes because I think it's so cute for them to say it the incorrect way. I usually say it the way they say it, so they think it's supposed to be pronounced that way, and do it longer.

My son is *supposed* to ask for help when he wants to run in the sprinkler. We have a small yard and it doesn't take too much water pressure for the sprinkler to throw water into neighbor's yards.
But... at least once a summer I look out the window and see him taking matters into his own hands. The hose has a valve attachment at the end. He will turn on the spigot, not see any water coming out, pick it up, look into it and then turn on the valve without thinking to point it away from his face.

Theresa N just totally cracked me up! My kids won't touch the hot sauce but they love sucking on lemons which then gives them both sour faces. This cracks up my husband and I so they love to keep doing it.

Sure! I think we all do.

But I have to say, I find your baby's tongue IN the lid of a bottle of hot sauce at a restaurant a little gross. (Your baby's not gross, just the fact of a tongue being in a lid being used by other customers....bleccch.)
At home is fine, but just the sanitary issue would have made me stop him at a public eatery!

I havnt but my mom would. I have a twin sister and we are very different. Im a big mouth and she's quiet and sneaky. When we were little if something didn't go my way well, everyone knew it. My sis, nope she would hold her breath. Yep! Piss her off and she would hold het breath till she konked out. The first time she did it my mom bout had a heart attack and rushed her to the doc. He reassured mom it wouldn't hurt her and she would come to just fine. O yes! At first that turd got whatever she wanted with that little tactic but once mom learned she would be ok all she got was a headache! ! Ha ha ding dong!
Have a great weekend ladies :)
