JFF: Does Pinterest Unnerve You like It Does Me?

Maybe I just need to get over this but figured I'm not the only one who feels this way. I get that Pinterest is social but it's just so weird to me to have people "pinning" my pins. I truly had no idea how it worked but figured that because I am much more involved in Thanksgiving this year, it would be a good place to organize recipes I want to use or decorations I want to make. It didn't occur to me that the whole world could see my collection (stupid I know, that's the whole point of this, right)? So I set up my little Thanksgiving board and no lie within an hour had 6 people I know in real life "following" me. How did they even know I was on there so quickly (I disabled the Facebook posting thing from the get-go). I pinned a recipe a couple of hours ago and now 12 strangers have it too.

I guess I need to disable the e-mail alerts because I guess that's what's so odd. It would be like getting a personal e-mail every time someone sends a flower here. I don't know why to me this is different from getting a flower here or a like from FB - maybe it's because it's total strangers? I also feel like everyone I know has all of my recipes now...there's no magic to my mini pumpkin pies when half of the guests saw it pinned a week before the party, kwim?

Does anyone use those "Secret" boards? It's too late for Thanksgiving, but I might use one for when I start organizing my Christmas stuff. Honestly, I wish there were a way to do this outside of social networking - I love having one place to collect links to things I like I just don't like sharing them all with the whole world.

What say you?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Lilly it's in your settings. There is a FB/twitter section where you can disable posting your pins to FB.

Maybe it's the terminology that's a turn off...the idea of being "followed" bugs me LOL.

To me, it's not like tearing something out of a magazine because not everyone in real life has the same magazines, or knows that you tore out an article. Like for Thanksgiving next week, 4 of the guests are on Pinterest...I normally cite my recipes in person (as in them: "Wow I love those mini pumpkin pies!" and me: "thanks, I got them from the Bakerella website!") but now there's no surprise. Anyway...first world problems, eh?

I love pinning and having people pin my pins or be able to see other people's pins. I spend less time online looking for ideas now. I follow people with similar taste so it makes seeing something cool even easier (like having my own assistant doing the looking for me). I'm one of those people who loves to share my knowledge. It drives me crazy at work when people keep a method a secret... I write it all out for the next instructor to have when I leave. I know some people get a bit unnerved by stuff they don't mean to share explicitly but online, you have to get used to it (and mind what you post!). I love the secret boards though. Finally a place I can put gift ideas on!

And for me, I disable FB and other newsfeeds for everything I do because I like to control that aspect. I pin so much it would be a horror for non Pinterest friends to have to see it on their newsfeed. Right now there is no "stalker" aspect to Pinterest so I'm not too concerned about that. The only people who stalk me are my friends anyway. =)

I get excited when people follow my boards or repin my pins. It's a compliment. It means they like your stuff. I have a board for Apraxia of Speech, which is a neurological disorder that my daughter has. My friend and I both contribute to the board with things we find. We have tons of people following it and repinning our stuff. I think it's fantastic that the stuff we find on the internet is helping other kids with disabilities!

If you want things all in one place without everyone seeing it, save the links in your favorites tab on your computer. Problem solved.

I agree! Honestly, I was so excited when I found out about the secret boards. Too bad you only get 3 though. I hadn't pinned a thing before the secret boards, because I just didn't want people to see what I was pinning! But I must admit to spending more than a few hours pinning away this week now that "my stuff" can only be seen by me. :) Was able to get rid of a ton of Firefox bookmarks by pinning them instead, so also feels good to clean those up a bit.

Yes, I agree, it's weird.
I figured out how to disable the Facebook part of it, and I now know I am not following anyone else, but it seems like there's no control over who follows me (?)
I guess that's the whole point of the new "secret board" feature.
I suppose it's like anything else online though, it's never REALLY private, is it?
And I suppose that's how the site makes money. It's very similar to Facebook in that it tracks what you (and your friends/followers) "like" and then makes suggestions, to businesses, shops, other sites, whatever.

I was freaked out by the whole copy right infringement thing, so I never got hooked on it. I guess that's a different unnerving, lol...

Yes I feel it's weird as well. But however I don't have anything personal in there. Yes people can get an idea of my likes and dislikes but what can they do with that? I did not give my full name though. I used a part of my name like I have used here in mamapedia, I did not give my surname and no, it's not linked to my FB. So maybe that's how I managed to have to only strangers re-pinning my pins. I am ok with that because of course I browse through others' public boards, and if everybody wants to be secretive , how would Pinterest even work? Maybe you can try secret boards for few boards you really don't want the world to see, the rest can be open to all. It's all about sharing ideas :)

I don't like it either.

Everybody tried to get me to sign up.

I finally decide to try it and it's not that user friendly if you don't use a phone.

Ugh.

I agree. But, I think that sometimes if you pin something that someone else has pinned, then someone else pins it, you can see that. It doesn't mean that they necessarily pinned it off your board, or if they did, that they are looking at all your stuff. Right?

I have only 2 followers (total strangers) and use Pintrest only sparingly, and it kind of weirds me out.

I figure, I'm pinning things that are out on the web, not my own personal stuff. I'm not going to worry too much about it. I would use the private pin boards for anything that was my own personal photos though - although I don't expect to use Pintrest for that stuff.

I disabled the facebook stuff too.

my profile is generic so I guess either people know me or they don't and the ones that know me i'm ok with, and the ones that don't i just assume are cyber strangers.

To me pinterest is like ripping pages from Better HOmes and Garden or ladies home journal. Everyone that got that additon saw your mini pumpkin pies too.

maybe you just feel like the recipie you find is for you and you alone, but really anyone with google could have found it sooner or later. and just because you didn't see guest oen and guest two pulling their LHJ or BHG from their mailbox doesnt mean they werent reading it too.

so i don't sweat it,

but just out of curiosity, I know i can stop from putting my pins on FBby unchecking the box each time, But are you talking about removing something else from FB? and how do you do that?

Hopeyour Holidays are wonderful!!
