T.S.
My ob/gyn is usually down between my knees doing their job so no, I never give a single thought to my feet.
That would be like getting a facial before going to get a mammogram. Really silly, I don't see how the two are related at all.
I usually bring/wear socks, or at least make sure my toes are painted before the annual exam. It has always crossed my mind that the medical professionals might take a peek at our feet.
Well, yesterday I went for my annual and as I was putting my feet in the stirrups, the doc commented that he and the nurse can always tell a busy woman from a leisurely one by their feet. He then proceeded to look at my feet and then say,"you must be one of the busy ones". Gee, thanks! Now, I had chipped polish on my toes on Sunday, which I removed and hadn't had a chance to redo before my appointment. Plus, I thought it was my own paranoia that they would actually care what was going on w/ my feet and decided not to worry about it. This is an older doctor who I have been to for the past 11 years. His nurse looked mortified, but he does have a dry sense of humor and zero bedside manner, so I wasn't shocked, but it confirmed my suspicion that they do pay attention to the feet. For the record, my feet are not funky, but probably could use a little attention.:)
My question to you: Do you make sure your feet are presentable before your annual exam? Do you wear socks? Do you care?
Thanks for all the great responses! I am laughing over my morning coffee right now! I certainly wasn't offended by his comment, it just got me thinking about what other women do in these situations.
Gotta go now, I am just so busy! ;)

I always wear socks. If I like my GYN, I shave my legs. Just kidding. I love my GYN, but remembering to shave my legs before the appointment is a little far. I need at least the promise of dinner and a movie for that.
I haven't painted my nails since I was a teenager. I honestly don't get it. They are feet; They are still ugly even with polish on them.
Good heavens, no! (socks, yes)
I'm in my 60's and have watched the bar for women's grooming rising for decades. It strikes me as sad, a bit intimidating, and frankly, impractical to have to primp for everything. What is that fear about, that others are judging every. single. detail. about us?
Clean and groomed is what I've always aimed for, and this is the first time I've ever heard it suggested that we should pretty-up for our doctors.
I make sure my vagina is washed.
I don't care about my feet.
I'm sorry, but I'm paying a doctor to look at my nether regions and check my boobs. I don't really care what she thinks about the rest of it. And I wear socks because I never know the condition of the feet in the stirrups before mine. Athlete's foot? No, thanks.
Seriously.... why would I pay for 'maintenance" when I'm paying her for an uncomfortable exam? I don't do it for my husband, who I love and who supports me-- why would I do it for anyone else?
ETA: Exactly, Peg. I mean, I heard so many women talking about getting bikini waxes before giving birth.... why go through pain so you can go through more pain? When did body hair become the thing to worry about?
I've never thought my OB/GYN would look at my feet. Hell, I just try to tame the jungle and make sure I've showered that day.
Seriously?
I gotta believe that someone who looks at hoo-haas all day for a living couldn't possibly give rip about people's feet! Lol
(My toes are always polished...but geez...that doc sounds judgmental! "Leisurely" because my toes are painted? Yeah, right!
Ha. I've never had a pedicure in my life...
My doc is lucky if I decide to do a little landscaping. I figure that, as I practice basic hygiene, my feet (and nether region) can't possibly be the worst he has seen in his profession... And I'm certainly not trying to impress him. So I really don't care. Lol.
No. I make sure my girl parts are groomed and my feet aren't stinky. That's it!
I usually wear socks but, if I didn't, it would never have occurred to me to get a pedicure. I wouldn't think a gyno would really care what your feet looked like, considering everything else they have to look at.
The nurse was mortified because the doctor was being a big uncouth! I'm sure he thought he was being funny, but he's walking a tightrope between telling some women they are vain and insufficiently busy (or wealthy enough to not work and to afford pedicures), and telling other women they are under-groomed but it's excusable because they are working and busy. It's an old-fashioned way of pitting employed women against SAHMs, women of means against those without.
No, I don't do pedicures and I don't give a damn what my doctor thinks! Given what the doctor is looking at and talking about, it seems feet are pretty unimportant. I am clean and wear deodorant (unless I'm getting a mammogram, when it's not allowed), and I don't care whether my legs are shaved. Any doctor who cares more about that than he does about my ovaries and uterus is not going to be my practitioner for long. I wear socks if it fits with my outfit for the day. If I'm wearing sneakers and I think my feet might be sweaty, then I do take fresh socks or take my sneakers off early (the nurse usually wants my shoes off before I get weighed anyway).
I care about odor, and not about appearance. I assume the doctor is the same. I don't care how many advanced degrees, fellowships, and board positions the doctor has, he's not an expert on cosmetics, nor is my appearance at all relevant to my medical condition. I don't care if my hair is done, if my make-up is on or off, whether my shirt matches my jeans (not that it matters when I'm going to be asked to put on a lovely paper gown), or whether my roots need a touch-up!
I'm usually more concerned about making sure my lady parts neat and tidy. Never thought about my feet.
I have clean hand knit socks on my feet. Personally I'd prefer he pay attention to the parts of my body that require his attention and not my feet/socks.
Ha ha! I have never thought of that before! I do wash my feet so that they don't stink, but I get a pedicure for myself, not for my gyn! Hysterical!!
I don't care.
My feet are fine polished or not.
No biggie to me.
Nor my Doc.
Omigosh. What my doctor thinks about my feet (or any other body part NOT under his/her immediate care) is none of my concern. I'm generally presentable all over, but that's for ME (for some reason, I like being clean and tidy), not for someone else.
Had my doc said something like that, I probably would have blurted out "Dude, really?" and given him a weird look.
I think you reached the wrong conclusions. Your doctor made an observation and a comment. That doesn't mean all doctors will do the same - notice and/or make a comment. It also doesn't mean you need to suddenly start getting pedicures and primping for his visits.
You know your doctor is already rough around the edges so are you really suprised he made an off the cuff joke about your toes? Furthermore, do you really think he would want you reaching the conclusions you did? He sounds a bit like my doctor. My doctor makes those kinds of teasing comments and that's all the magic to the situation. I keep going to my doctor because I like his sense of humor. It's not a fun thing to do once a year so I picked someone who helps take the edge off by kidding around with me about things. The whole thing sounds like a joke or a gentle ribbing to me. I would take it as such and joke back.
As for what I do for a ob/gyn visit? The same thing I do whenver I go out in public - shower, dress, etc. Nothing special for any doctor's visits. I have no doubt they have seen every version of a vagina so mine is yet another one in a long line. Who cares.
I don't understand why his statement would be offensive; I'd take it as a compliment. I'd much rather be classified as the "busy" woman than the "leisurely" one. I bet he meant it as a compliment but didn't realize that some women are sensitive about their feet.
Hey, at least he directed that comment toward women's feet and not their privates!
As usual, a million flowers to Peg M.
I don't get pedicures in general, and I certainly don't get them to avoid offending the delicate sensibilities of the man who assesses the health of my hoo-ha once a year.
I had my first pedicure Monday. I was wondering how she felt about the fact that my legs aren't shaved.
(I'm not being snarky, I'm serious and commiserating with you.)
I've had one pedicure in my life. I don't care.
I get a pedicure MAYBE 2 times a year. Once before Summer and once during the winter to get all the dry skin off. I have other things that I would rather spend my money on. I have a lot of nail polish and I've gotten pretty good at doing my own nails anyway. So, nope, I do not care about my feet when I go for my yearly check up. I just make sure to make my appointments for first thing in the morning so I'm just showered up and clean.
If I am getting my physical in the winter I am wearing socks anyway, because I always wear socks in the winter and I don't take my socks off for a pap test. I never wear socks in the summer, so my toenails are always done. (I rarely go for a pedicure, but I do paint my toenails regularly.) I remember when I was in labour with my first baby I painted my toenails before I phoned my husband to come home and drive me to the hospital!
I always wear socks and leave them on because the idea of walking on the exam room in my bare feet seriously grosses me out! Doesn't matter what kind of exam I'm there for.
I think it is interesting that they notice. Those rooms do seem cold so I bet a lot of people wear socks.
I used to always do my own feet, but once I hurt my back. I started getting pedicures. I wear so many open toe shoes, yes even in the winter, it is just part of my routine. I love the leg and foot massage that comes along with it. I love having that hour to read... I never go with a friend, I like the quiet time.
Plus my pedicures last up to 6 weeks, sometimes 8! ..
The weekend before our daughter was born, a friend was hosting a baby shower for me. I had cute sandals I was going to wear, when I bent down to polish my toes, I could not reach, I got the giggles so hard, I fell over..
My husband polished them.. He was so cute with the little brush.
That week I went into early labor, I remember during a super tough contraction the nurse said, "your toes look great!" I stopped moaning and said, "thanks, my husband painted them last weekend!" She then told my husband what a great job he had done. I realized later she was doing these things to distract me from the pain..
So pretty much all of the time my toes are polished.
well, if it's summer (the only time i get my single yearly pedicure) and i happen to have made my annual pedi appointment right before my annual girly exam.........
my feet are pretty battered. i run (jog. walk. shuffle.) long distances every week, so my calluses are hard-earned and necessary. i'm overweight so my toenails are rarely neatly trimmed- too dang hard to reach. and while i love pretty polish on my toesies, i'm just not willing to take the time and spend the money to get someone else to do 'em for me very often.
i'm glad your doc didn't offend you. but it's really not his place to judge women on the state of their feet. if he got me in the wrong mood i might have been tempted to whack him upside the ear with one of my 'busy' hooves and say 'oh excuse me! my feet aren't use to lazing around in stirrups like this!'

I won't go to a male gyn. This is one of the reasons - insensitive to what might bother a woman, especially as we are so vulnerable in that office. ANY non medical observations about your body are completely inappropriate, in my opinion.
I bring socks because my feet are always cold. But honestly, I don't care- to use the words of your doctor, I am one of the 'busy ones'. :)
I'd call that a backhanded compliment. I wear socks.
No, I don't give a thought to my feet.
Guess I'm one of the busy ones!
Actually I just gave birth and it crossed my mind that I should get a pedicure before my due date, to pamper myself and have cute feet for the delivery. Never got around to it. Too busy. Guess if I can't be bothered to do it for a delivery, I certainly wouldn't for a routine visit.
Whatever the condition of my feet, I wear socks.
I only leave my sock on if the room is cold. I don't give two hoots what they think of my feet ... feet are disgusting anyway so ... bleck. I really dislike having my feet touched so I almost never get pedicures.
I think I've had a total of 4 (maybe 5) pedicures in the 47 years I've been alive. There won't be a 5th anytime soon.
Although I DID get a full body massage today so they did my feet too ... that sorta counts I guess LOL
Socks.
And I have never had a professional pedicure. Ever. Manicure, yes.
After so many people I know have gotten fungus infections...I do not do pedicures in winter at all. If I do go...I let the nail person file and polish only.
I don't for the regular gyn appt. But I will say that when I have a physical with my primary care guy, I make sure my feet look nice. Only because I happen to know that he asks to look at my feet. I was so embarrassed the first time he asked because they were a mess!! So because I know he will ask, I want them to look nice!
I usually always have on socks because my feet get cold quickly and dr offices are always cooler to me. But under those socks, my toes are always polished and I usually get a compliment/comment on the color. When I went in for my hysterectomy last March, they were bright orange and the topic of conversation with the nurses.
I'm like you...I get a pedi or wear socks...I also made sure I had a fresh pedi right before I had my kids:)
My toes are always done...and I'm not a leisurely woman:)
I don't really care what others think of my feet or my nail polish I guess. I get a pedicure whenever I have time, which is like, once every month or 2. If you don't like it, you're always welcome to buy me a pedicure or gift certificate, and take care of my kid while I go get my pedicure.
Out of courtesy, I will make sure I am clean, smelling fragrant, and groomed, since he'll be examining that part of my body. I'll also typically shave my legs while I'm at it but that is it. Since I do basic maintenance every week anyway, I am not really going out of my way.
I wouldn't take his comment as an insult, maybe he was trying to say that you look like a busy mom who is very much involved with her kids. That's the way I would have taken it anyway. I would have asked him if he'd like to give me a pedicure then since my feet are so gnarly. Sorry, I'm sarcastic.
